Personally, I think it's because the second cour was supposed to be a movie. Episodes 22 onwards episodes all would have been components of the movie, while the first part of the second cour was just sloppy filling thought up to stretch Delta to 2 cours.

Because of this, I think Delta will be very strong from now on

This is what I mean. It had momentum until episode 13, then it meanders for 8 episodes,, which is suicide as a weekly TV series, and it sloppily resolves it in the 9th.

Frontier could get away with filler because the shipping wars and Alto's personality served as padding, but the plot unfolding felt like it only exposed the weakest parts of Delta.

I think it's pretty awful that Hayate said he isn't going to lose control any more and that determination/declaration is probably going to mean he doesn't. And that Casshim died just as he was about to pull the trigger on Hayate. It was nice to see Hayate just about keeping away from him without a buff though. And struggling to do so.

This, 1000 times this. Mirage's character has been atrociously mishandled. It's like the opposite of what happened to Aida in G-reco.Aida went from a potential character with lots of drama to basically a nobody. Completely ininfluential to the story.
Mirage started out as a mediocre character with lots of potential growth and drama. But fucking nothing happened for 2/3 of the series. And then lo and behold by "writer's magic" we have her declare her love to Hayate; become an ace etc... Just like that. It really makes no sense because there isn't a growth aspect to her character over the last 20+ episodes.

Kawamori's account is that he had no intention of doing a sequel originally after for years after ward but that he eventually came up with some ideas he thought worked best in a Macross setting and so wanted to do them, which is presumably 7 - since Plus was a work converted to Macross part way through production if I recall. Whether you believe that or not is another thing, but it's his word on the matter.

Personally, I'm not bothered, since I think II is boring and pretty forgettable. I saw it about 6 years ago when I marathoned the franchise, but beyond the main character being a reporter I couldn't tell you a thing about it after those years. It left no real impression on me. It wasn't bad. It just wasn't anything really.

Agreed. And the rest of Delta was only able to do so early on because 1) they were trying to disable Var'd friendlies, and 2) they were exceptionally skilled. Yeah, Hayate got "better," but he's still not a professional fighter pilot, but somehow's as good as Messer now?

Seems like a cheap as fuck way of justifying letting him keep the "Reaper" paint job.

I wouldn't describe him as angsty, but I would say he's a pretty boring character now and has no real personality beyond being dense. I don't think he was great during the first few episodes either personally, but he did have a perceptible personality and gave Mirage shit when she tried to intimidate him in to compliance, as well as calling Freyja out when he thought she was being overly ambitious. He's a blank slate a this point, which may be the intention looking at what happened when Freyja sang - but if it is, then the intention is a pretty terrible idea since he becomes completely uninteresting as well as unentertaining, and doesn't really require he be a blank slate to make the point she's dominating him, making him her own image of perfection or whatever.

It is a super prototype that had large chunks of Fold Quartz in it.

The thing about Frontier is that during the TV run you had some songs that really hit the highest highs. Like Northern Cross or Diamond Crevasse, or something catchy like Seikan Hikou.

But then if you actually go back and listen to the Frontier TV discography shit's terrible and you skip half the songs, like What 'Bout My Star or Yousei or whatever the fuck. And then there are a lot of songs which would be decent if the lyrics were not totally incoherent like Lion.

Also Sawano would only be good for Macross if it was an OVA and he was working on ONLY Macross that year.

Why? With Kaname as the de facto liaison of Walkure, there's no need to for anybody in Chaos to have to talk to a member of the idol group. And if you remember the very first episode where the Delta members were pretty in sync with Walkure in the during the tactical concert and then in the last episode half of it was devoted to how Walkure was formed and deployed.
