What does /m/ think of Robocop?

Either janperson, gun gibson or jiban since he was the inspiration for these 3 as far as I can remember. Thanks to Gavan we have all of th
>>14675964
An incredibly good film and a golden benchmark for live action sci-fi action.
I liked Robocop 2
>>14675982
Robocop 2 is a perfectly acceptable action romp.
It's just not as good as Robocop 1 and follows from it awkwardly.Robocop 3 is shit.

The classic
>>14675964
>>14675982
>>14675989
This. Original movie is great, second is okay but not a good sequel in a fashion, third is tripe.
>>14675982
It's 1 of only 2 good movies its director made.
>>14675989
>>14676262
Shit, then I'm really going to hate Robocop 3. Robocop 2 was interesting and had its moments, such as with the Elvis skeleton, but it just feels a lot weaker than the first.
>>14675964
ED-209 is probably the first mecha design that I thought was cool as shit.
I quite liked the 2014 film (keeping it aside from the originals), but for the new bots and drones rather than its plot.
So many of their issues in 2014 would have been sorted if they'd just given him an "off-duty" body as well.
>>14676368
Not gonna lie, that's fucking horrifying
is 3 the latest one? if you saw the first 2 and liked them for what they were, yeah you probably won't like 3, its trying to make it more appealing to a today's audience
there's something to be said for a robot that has difficulty walking and pouring cups of coffee yet can still neutralize a room full of terrorists
>>14676368
Fucking shit that's scary. Imagine running down an alley after midnight with that thing floating after you.

>>14676262
2 is clearly weaker then one, but unlike all the stuff that came after it still has a bit of the weird sense of humor Robocop needs.
The movie literally calls the new machine Robocop 2. And it's addicted to Nuke, the final boss is a fucking drug-addicted cyborg hippie with a flatscreen TV for a face.
Everything about that is fantastic.
>>14676303
Robocop 3 involves him fighting ninjas while using a jetpack and having a cast of children cheer him on. I'm 100% serious.
>>14677282
and he drives a pimp car
>>14677288
I legitimately forgot he drove around in a pink Lincoln Continental. How does a movie this goofy try to play it straight?
>>14677282
>>14677288
And it kills off his partner for literally no reason.
I feel bad for Robert John Burke. He's actually a damn good actor, and for his big Hollywood movie he's stuck with a dogshit script and forced to be in the shadow of Peter Weller's iconic performance.
>>14677333
I'd pray my character is killed off of I had to act in RoboCop 3. Literally more screentime or a larger role could only be a detriment to your career.
>>14675964
Hollywood should stop remaking Paul Verhoeven films.
>>14676366
>>14676368
I didn't actually dislike the rebooted design at all, looked pretty stylish I thought. Everything else about that movie sucked ass though, was disappointed because I liked some of the director's previous work.
>>14676415
With it's hand following close by (stupid gun laws requiring a human hand to pull the trigger)?
>>14675964
>What does /m/ think of Robocop?
Great character, specially for the 80's.
Movie 1 was great. Violence, characters, plot and irony about the media. Instant classic (and Nancy Allen was my copfu).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UFSjYXI67rI
Movie 2 was just ok. Should be watched as a good action movie, instead of a serious sequel...
Movie 3 got great arsenal and punk elements, but the plot, characters and absence of Peter Weller was lame. Jill Hennessy, in other hand, was nice.
The Robocop series got some curious characters (Diana Power/NeuroBrain, Pudface) and possibilities, but the production was, unfortunately, low budget.
Prime Directives was awful...
The Padilha reboot got some right points (faster robot/almost a ninja, access to web data in real time and the bike). However, the PG-13 gore, dumb plot with his wife and weak conflicts (specially the very end) killed all the possibilities for a great movie. In the end, was just an ok ordinary movie.
In toku, people like more the rescue heroes (Winspector and Solbrain), but I think Jiban way superior. If you analize the suit design used in 88-89, it was incredible well done for a TV series.
Janperson was dumb.
>>14675982
I still cant figure out why they would put live ammo into Cain at a unveiling
>>14677928
Remember the remote control that psychiatrist lady had? Remember how she got right next to Cain to wave it in the air and show that he couldn't use his guns without it? Yeah.
>>14677947
That still doesnt explain the purpose of putting live ammo into him for an unveiling.
>>14677960
ED-209 had ammo at his unveiling when he shot Kenny in Robocop 1.
Because.... story.
>>14677960
>Robert John Burke
Its the 80s/90s, there was no such thing as "Safety Rules".
>>14675989

I would have liked to see more of Murphy and less of Robo in 2, if that even makes sense. It seems that everything that last scene in the first movie had and implied
>What's your name, son?
>Murphy
was dropped for whatever reason. Granted I haven't seen the movie in years now so I may not be remembering things correctly.
>>14676415
Isn't that a creature in Indian, as in India not Native Americans, myth?
>>14678055
There was a whole thing in 2 where he had to go on record as being just a machine so he could stop freaking out his wife.
>>14677928
>>14677960
OCP is just that confident that they can control what they make, even when proven otherwise.
>the original, especially the director's cut
One of my all time favorite movies. A brilliant satire of 1980s consumer culture that's still a great action movie with a lot of character and charm.
>RoboCop 2
Nowhere near as good as the first movie, but still watchable. You have to turn your brain down a bit though. The comic adaptation somehow manages to be a little better than the movie.
>RoboCop 3, the TV series, Prime Directives,
All complete shit for one reason or another.
>RoboCop 2014
Not really deserving of all the boiling vitrol that "hardcore" Robo fans give it. I thought it was just kind of generic and lifeless. It's the kind of movie that would have just been swept under the rug and forgotten had it not been titled "RoboCop."
https://youtu.be/S3Gtu4JdNxM
My absolute favorite movie of all time. Somehow got me into tokusatsu.
>>14675973
I'll never get enough of that 'half helmet and chinstrap' design.
>>14678239
>I'll never get enough of that 'half helmet and chinstrap' design.
It's a symbolism, anon...
Many mech characters, specially cyborgs, make some "move" after killing some enemy or finishing a mission. It's just a way to show the status "mission accomplished". It's not for practical purposes, but to show some emotion in non-human heroes.
Robocop take off the helmet, Fire open the visor, Jiban reveal the red eyes...
>>14677535
He was a junior executive.
I live in Ontario and have been to Toronto a bunch of times. WHen I saw the 2014 movie, I could recognize every street corner. Everything about it looks like Toronto. I could see the University of Toronto. It kept taking me out of the movie.
Did that happen to other people or is it only because I know Toronto?
>>14678065
>>14678055
They reset Murphy. That happens in EVERY RoboCop sequel, including animation.
>>14678153
>I thought it was just kind of generic and lifeless.
Honestly, it felt like a forgttable tv-movie that was a rip off of RoboCop.
I have seen themovie but I couldn't really tell you much detail about it. It's that forgettable.

Is it weird I always found the heat distortion around that cut to be such a well done effect?

Posting superior Japanese boxart
1st RocoCop is a masterpiece, 2nd is Okay. To be honest after years of hearing how bad it was I watched it a couple of years ago and found it acceptable. Nothing near the 1st movie perfection but at least isn't RoboCop 3 levels of bad.
Also the reboot wasn't bad either. Again, compared to the 1st movie isn't that good, but as its own thing it had some interesting ideas, I went expecting the worst and found myself liking some of the stuff.
>>14678678
Toronto is too clean for "near future" Detroit anyway.
>>14678687
I guess I'm more forgiving of it now, but Murphy's personality in RC2 makes sense to me. The guy has what's left of his humanity denied at every turn, and is even forced to deny it to his wife's face. Sure, he's still quick with the one-liners, but overall he's clearly depressed. It only seems weird because it's thrown on the backburner after the first 30 minutes.

I'd like 2 more if it didn't play it so safe. It felt like it was trying too hard to stay true to the source material making it feel like an empty husk of its predecessor, that being said it's got some great moments but they're too few and far between for me.
>>14682641
iirc they made a comic of Frank Miller's original Robocop 2, and it was more everything.
>>14678441
I thought Robocop's "move" was to twirl his gun, and the helmet removal was all about Robocop coming to terms with what he'd become, while regaining some measure of his humanity.
>>14675982
>>14675989
Ilike both. Nostalgia and guilty pleasure, I suppose.
>>14678153
>Not really deserving of all the boiling vitrol that "hardcore" Robo fans give it. I
This. It was mediocre and boring. Not actively bad.
>>14675982
"Shit, he's fucked up!"
"Go fuck a refrigerator, pecker-neck!"
Wasn't Robocop 2 Verhoeven's commentary on parent groups who complained about how Robocop was unbelievably violent and yet, naturally kids would want to see it, so parent groups complained?
>>14683665
Verhoeven had nothing to do with it.
I feel a lot of the "satirical" attempts in Robocop 2 fell flat, and made the gore and stuff which had been amped up, just a little pointless, for lack of a better term. It just seemed to be going for shock value, with shock being the sole reason behind it.
I'm also unhappy with how they undid all of Murphy's character growth from the first film, in spite of also acknowledging it by having the cops refer to him as Murphy, rather than "Robo" or something.
>>14678969
>Posting superior Japanese boxart
You know it was drawn by Walt Simonson, right?
He's from Knoxville, Tennessee.
Just sayin'.
>>14683662
The fact that a unique cult classic was revisioned into such a generic offering is exactly why it's actively bad. Like, even if you go with the delusional theory that it's blandness is some sort of meta statement on remakes doesn't excuse it from being utterly forgettable.
>>14684915
No shit, but this is the shitty cover we got.
>>14690256
It's telling that even the US cover is better, and that was just the logo on a metallic-looking patterned background.

Apparently in the 80s they thought we would be connecting to USB ports with flesh-piercing spikes
>>14693498
>But the new MadMax was fucking amazing.
I thought it was meh, it just seemed like the same concepts of Road Warrior from the 80s, custom cars and trucks and characters in "LOOK AT HOW WEIRD I LOOK" costumes in a big chase, done with 2016 movie technology.
I mean, people complain about The Force Awakens being bad because it took too much from A New Hope, but Fury Road basically did the same fucking thing, taking from The Road Warrior, but people think Fury Road is a great movie????
Fucking retarded.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h16e5Bm2m3M
I miss movies having good theme songs.
>>14693515
Fury Road didn't just copypaste Road Warrior. It became it's own by turning Road Warrior up to eleven.
>>14693510
In the 80s and early 90s, the only way to get to certain cabling and connections in many PCs involved dislocating your wrist and possibly gashing it open on some of the unfinished steel edges. Flesh-piercing spikes would've been about on par.
>>14693510
Its the same as how R2D2 can connect to basically fuckign ANYTHING in Starwars with his little dick attachment that pops out and spins around inside whatever the hell connection ports everything ever made in starwars seems to have.
>>14693515
I think they're both great. I could have done without TFA having another Death Star type weapon, but that's really my only problem with it.
