I don't have a good idea, but I'll just guess that it's a way of saying "square". "Slow", out-of-date, subpar, but all the conformist square Reagan-voting normies eat it up because it's the popular, "well-marketed" standard.

Or maybe they shitposted back in 1989 too, and that user was just trying to bait people into an argument using a nonsensical descriptor.

>>14674419
To be fair, computer games in 1989 were much larger in scale and graphical quality than NES games were, in part due to the amount of storage space available for both. Comparing the digitized sound and full color digital VGA graphics of say, Mean Streets on PC or the polygon graphics and realistic driving model of Indianapolis 500 with even Castlevania III which came out the same year was like comparing apples and oranges. (Even though Castlevania III was more fun.)

Ken Williams from Sierra (makers of King's Quest) once mentioned in an interview that the PC market and the console market was very different in the 80s and early 90s. Computers were extremely expensive and available to only business people and people with the income to spend on it, whereas consoles were a very accessible price point based on the Japanese business model. So on the PC, you'd see these quest games and simulation games that appealed to an older, intellectual elitist market, and games that were fun and appealed to everyone on consoles. Sure, the Nintendo hardware was inferior to PC, but you weren't paying the kind of prices to play that you were in the picture I linked.

Linked here, I mean. Check out those PC prices.
$200 for a Nintendo doesn't seem quite so bad compared to a $6000 PC to play Wing Commander on.
>>
>>14680419
Old PC publications are comedy gold.

I need to go find that old issue of PC Magazine my dad handed to me a year or so ago, the cherry on top of it all was it was an April issue from the 90's and yet nothing about it screamed April Fools.

But when you look back to it now, it's just fucking hilarious.

Incidentally, if anyone wants a trip back through time, the goons at SA actually did something rather hilarious and insane: http://lparchive.org/Computes-Gazette/

Computers weren't just expensive business machines, they were also hobby toys for nerds with too much time on their hands, who'd go on to challenge any notion that personal computers would only be a passing fad of the times.
>>
>>14680419
Reminder that PCs didn't come with sound cards back then. You had to pay extra, in addition to those prices.

I STILL remember how much people bitched about the character designs in this looking ugly because it was Peter Chung.

Granted, some of the weirder war machines of the Persian army were kind of borderline on mecha, but otherwise, the point stands.
