I think it's just you. The first film was okay and Desghidorah was unique in that he was a quadripedal Ghidorah variant, but the quality pretty much stayed consistent throughout the series and overall, it felt cheaper than the Godzilla movies before it -- probably because of the use of those stiff Mothra puppets and the lack of varying new enemies that brought anything interesting to the table. Also, the kids -- it was obviously made for a younger audience and had a lighter tone than the Godzilla movies, but having them be the focus of the films really made it feel less iconic and more in the realm of TV tokusatsu.

Grand King Ghidorah was cool, though. Too bad he never did much except stand over a CGI bubble terrorizing a bunch of Japanese kids, then get sidelined for 3/4s of the movie only to get his shit pushed in by Armor Mothra at the end.

garethzilla is overated, just having a scene at night or sunset doesn't automatically make a film amazing

didn't really care for garethzilla, the first teaser trailer with the trail of destruction through las vegas and the train with the bodies was better than anything in the film

size - heisei wins, shingoji may beat it when I see it

gojidesign - 54,62,64,84,89,99 are the best suits, but the g2000 maquette was the perfect blend of all the suits

Godzilla is confirmed to have always existed in his present form in G14 and those tests were actually attempts to kill it. And the opening implies he and other monsters were stirring about in recent times before the nuclear age.

There's nothing in the original film that says he's mutated. Merely awoken. They don't make reference to his size being a result of radioactivity. At the very most it's implied that his breath is a result of the bomb, but of course they never explicitly say it. For all we know, in G'14, he could have gained atomic breath powers thanks to the U.S. nuking him all that time.

It's actually pretty close to the original origins when you break it down.

I highly doubt Japan gives a fuck about what other countries think of their films and entertainment. They only care if it's profitable in Japan and maybe in the U.S. or some other territory that eats up their shit and is willing to shell out big bucks for it. Also, the Japanese have an incredibly small local film scene compared to, say, Hollywood or Bollywood. Their box office is also smaller than other countries' so a big success in Japan would be a total flop in another country's economy. They'd rather play it safe with the economics they know and uber-Jew every other territory out the ass for distribution and licensing where they know they have the economy and fiscal clout to meet their demands.

At this point, most of the people who grew up on Godzilla films were either watching them in local theaters when they came out or caught them every weekend during Creature Feature/sci-fi movie line-ups and marathons (and that's just Showa era), and are into their 50s or more by now. The only other amount of Godzilla fans are some '90s-born manchildren who only got any knowledge of Godzilla through the '98 American version and the Heisei movies that were released on VHS during that time, along with Godzilla 2000 and the rest of the Millennium series. The last generation is the one revolved around the 2014 film, and I doubt there are that many youngsters who really cared that much for it, if any at all.

Honestly, we're lucky we're in an age where Godzilla is still as a niche market as it is that a company in the U.S. is willing to distribute the film, not only on DVD/BD, but also in a very limited capacity theatrically. If this were any other time before, it either would've just been dubbed and released straight to VHS or not even distributed at all in the U.S.
