What does /m/ think of The Fifth Element?

Luc Besson/10, opera scene is pretty cool.

It was great

It looked cool. Reminded me of that part in Heavy Metal with the cab driver.
>>
One of the most fun releases of 1997.

/m/-wise it's loaded with designs, personally I like the guns the vehicles in the city but hate most of the spaceships except for the cruise liner.

>>
>>14670610
It's a pretty damn fun movie. Reminds me a lot of something that'd show up Heavy Metal Magzine.
>>
>>14670610

I think it's the last movie where Bruce Willis still had hair left.
>>
>>14670610
The only problem I have with it is Milla Jovovich's big fight scene being shit. Other than that it's one of my favorite sci-fi movies.

Gary Oldman is pure perfection in this and Leon
>>
I really dislike this movie. The attempts to be stylish and funny are downright painful. I know the 90s were slim pickings for decent sci-fi, especially after 95, but Starship Troopers slays this junk.

Also Mila Jovovich is ugly and flat and Gary Oldman has trouble maintaining his accept.
>>
>>14671619
>Gary Oldman has trouble maintaining his accent.

That was a deliberate nuance of his character.
>>
>>14670610
I like it a lot. Love the cab chase scene. The whole movie wouldn't be anything without it's soundtrack.

Luc Besson's fetish for redhaired fightan women shows once again.

One of my favorite movies. I love everything about it.

Anyone else excited for Valerian?
>>
>>14674461
Will it be endearingly stupid and dumb and cool as fuck?
>>
>>14670610
My favorite movie. So good...casting, design, music...... Reminded me of all the Metal Hurlant Magazines i grew up with.....
>>
>>14674461
I absolutely hate who they casted for valerian, they needed to cast a more mature looking man, not a fucking twink.

Starship Troopers is a travesty once you read the book.
>>
>>14671881

CORBINNNNNN DALLASSSSSSSSS!

Great film absolutely loved it, a good example of a basic plot executed well.
>>
>>14675512
Not him, but I still enjoy watching the movie. I just pretend the movie is called Bug Hunt though.

I just hate how Verhoeven thinks he was making a critique about the book's themes when he never read the damn thing because he decided it was fascist warmongering.

Both are great for different reasons

>fascist warmongering
Dunno about warmongering, but it was about as fascist as you can get.

If you want another book like ST that also spawned a lot of space marine tropes check out The Forever War. There's a pretty good '88 comic adaptation too.
>>
>>14670668

It helps that Harry Canyon was one of the few good segments of that movie.
>>
>>14675512

The movie isn't trying to be the book though.
>>
>>14675660
Don't get me wrong, I won't deny the fascist tones of Heinlein's Federation. I'm just pissed off by how Verhoeven wrote off the entire book because it had a theme he disliked because of his own personal history with it, but still felt like his opinion on the book was worth anything.
>>
>>14675723

Not him but I think dealing with the nazis firsthand in your life gives you a good enough reason to dismiss pro-fascism arguments.
>>
>>14675734
I still think you ought to read something first before critiquing it. Or watch it, as many on /m/ seem to be guilty of. Me included.
>>
The trailers put me off looking like a big Star Wars ripoff, but after watching it it was big kooky fun. Love this movie
>>
>>14675723
It is a shame we got a silly parody of fascism in general instead of a specific one of Starship Troopers. But the movie has its merits too, and if he'd actually read the book we'd probably never have gotten it.
>>
>>14675749
Yeah, I'll never deny it's a fun movie. And my mother and grandfather both love watching it, and they were all military.
>>
>>14675512
I really don't care about its relation to the source material in any form. Its a hilarious B movie that somehow got made as a big budget blockbuster.
>>
>>14675734
that's retarded.

It's one of my favorite movies of all time. It's pure, glorious 90's cheese filtered through the screen of sci-fi.

>Gary Oldman is pure perfection in this and Leon
Is there a film where Gary Oldman is not pure perfection?
>>
>>14676003
Is it weird that my favorite roll by Gary Oldman was Egor Korshunov from Air Force One?
>>
>>14670610
I still remember this movie.

Every time I catch a flight and am trying to fit in my chair and hold still for 3+ hours I remember that scene.
>>
>>14676133
>only 3 hours
kek, try 7 or 18
>>
>>14675734
You're oversimplifying and labelling all of Starship Troopers as a "pro-fascist argument", which is beyond retarded.

Maybe fictional entities on the book had somewhat fascist elements but it wasn't fucking Mein Kampf, pull your head out of your ass.
>>
>>14676201

No I just mean in general, I didn't mean specifically to ST. ST is a fascist state, but a democratic one, not an autocratic one.

>>
>>14674461
>>14674729
Yeah, the actor looks like somebody's lesbian aunt.

Also I'll spam this board and the little pony board with shitposting if they drop Laureline's unicorn origin in the movie.
>>
>>14674729
>>14676324
I actually thought he looks cool in that picture, even if he doesn't match the illustrated version. And I was really surprised they managed to make that actor look cool.

>>14675782
The important thing to consider, if it hasn't been spelled out already by the others in this thread, is that while ST portrays a decidedly fascist society, and the narration justifies it, that doesn't mean Heinlein himself was advocating a Terran Federation style society. Maybe he thought it was a dystopia too, but he leaves it to the reader to be smart enough to see beyond Juan's shortsightedness.

ST basically says, "The United States of America won't work." That's not what I'd expect to hear from a former Naval officer who must've sworn to protect the Constitution. No more than I'd expect to hear him glorify cannibalism even after Stranger in a Strange Land.
>>
>>14676069

looks like evil ed norton.

Despite not being rich I fly business class for long haul flights. My legs kill me if I have to sit in economy for so long.
>>
The movie was so retarded, but it was great fun. Wasn't the story written by a high schooler or the writer thought of the story when he was in high school or something like that?

>universe is under threat of being consumed by a giant ball of pure evil
>giant ball of evil can call a man on the phone and negotiate to pay him money for his help
>>
>>14676557
It was Luc Besson's dream project that he'd been wanting to do since high school.
>>
>>14676557
>giant ball of evil can call a man on the phone and negotiate to pay him money for his help
and why wouldn't a giant ball of evil be able to call somebody
>>
>>14676003
I don't think I've ever seen a film with Gary Oldman where I could go "yeah there's Gary Oldman playing such and such character."

I figure you could do an entire short film where Gary Oldman is everyone, and you wouldn't even realize it's just Gary Oldman as everyone.
>>
>>14676557

>not using your gigantic ball of evil powers to call your minions

I still love that scene, the idea that "Mr. Shadow" is made of such pure evil that it makes Zorg's head bleed just by talking to him and it can barely bark out a sentence.

>GIVE

>THE
>STONES

>I

>>
>>14677167
It's weird, but it kind of reminds me of how C.S. Lewis did demons in Perelandra and Screwtape Letters, where demons can be intelligent and charismatic when they need to, but they stop using those traits when they don't have to use them. For them, intelligence is just a tool of convenience instead of an inherent good trait.
>>
>>14677195

I always took it as "Mr. Shadow" being made of such pure evil that it can barely speak, and when it does it hurts the people it talks to. It's like the movie cliche of Satan burning crosses when he touches them, just made of utter impurity.

I never even thought of Shadow as being charismatic it just somehow managed to find a rich head of industry who was as insane as it was and manipulated him with its vast resources. Which I guess you can acquire while being a big ball of evil.

Again, I'm probably the only one who likes this movie, but I loved him as Dr. Smith in Lost in Space. He was pure evil, he knew it, and he loved it.
>>
>>14677258

Lost In Space is fucking terrible, but it's fascinatingly bad. At the very least you can't say it's boring, same thing with Battlefield Earth.

And Oldman is the best part. Well, that and the fucking garage-tier CGI spiders that show up in the third act because what the fuck who thought anything about this screenplay was a good idea.
>>
>>14671619
>flat
you mean the best?
>>
>>14677258
The Robot and Dr. Smith were the only redeeming parts of the movie.
>>
>>14670610
I'm always kind of amazed to see Captain Hollister playing the cop.
>>
>>14670610
One of my favorites.
>>
>>14677274
The body armor with the helmet that segments up over the face and the multi-part assembled assault rifle Joey had fighting the Spiders was pretty neat.

Also the design of the family robot.

That movie was so bad, but holy hell the merch level was insane. I remember there was a website that you could design a planet for them to go explore and it was insanely hard because the slightest thing off about the atmospheric composition and they'd die or abandon it. That and one of those virtual desktop characters of the Robot.

Also this shit from Burger King.
