Macross Frontier. It's modern, his high quality animation for a tv series and is better animated than Delta. Has enjoyable and non retarded characters, good storyline and the classical ingredients of the Macross franchise should you want to watch other entries.

After the tv series, watch the films for an alternate take on the story. The film changes quite a few things, and it does have its moments.

If these 2 got you hooked into the franchise look further back. Macross Zero despite all the naysayers is a good ova. A little bit new age but you get to see what happens several months before the Zentraedi arrive and attack earth (a throwback to the original SDF Macross).

Further back and you're in the XXth century.

Macross Plus and Macross 7 were almost contemporaries but they're very different. The first is an ova, serious, fantastic animation and poor storyline. Macross 7 is well Macross 7. You either get hooked on the first couple of episodes or you'll hate it for the rest of your like.

Early 1990s you've got Macross II. It's an alternate sequel to SDF Macross and the first sequel to SDF Macross. It is an alternate sequel because it was not made by one of the original show's creator. The original character designer Haruiko Mikimoto worked on it though. And the mecha designs are quite interesting in their own right. It's an acquired taste. Find the blu-ray rips floating around. Well worth for character design and animation. Story is so-so.

1980s : You've got the theatrical film Macross Do You Remember Love ? It's a 2 hour condensed alternate version of the original tv series that was 39 episodes long. Things, characters, events are rearranged but it's worth it if only for the glorious high quality animation. One of best animated films of the 1980s. Last but not least the original tv series.

>Are you kidding? Frontier TV series was full of quality like Macross Delta when it was airing.

Yeah no. Delta is the epitome of a non animated series. Macross should be about fucking planes/battroids shooting things out of the sky/space every other episode. Frontier delivered on that. Delta doesn't.
Frontier delivered on the music, Delta is so-so. Frontier delivered on the characters especially The Galactic Fairy. Delta has non entities as characters. Freyja loves apples. That's it.
Frontier had a good storyline with various intrigues that are resolved as time goes on. Delta has non of that.
>>
>>14665628
I'm annoyed by people who screech "production order! production order!" like it's the answer to all the world's problems.

But for Macross, production order really is the answer.
>>
>>14665808
Which country? Pakistan?
>>
>>14665822
Delta delivered the planes in most of the 1st cour and it's still ongoing. No, delta isn't the epitome of a non animated series because Frontier was same. The studio behind them (Satelight) can animte for shit and do that with most of their series. The only improvement from frontier is the best framerate for the CG. Delta has very good songs and an ok Bgm, most of them are better than Frontier's one (Love thunder, Run Pika ending, Axia to name a few). Delta has a good storyline that connect to the other macrosses and had a good pace for the 1st cour. The 2nd cour suffer from a bad pace because of >>14661500

>The answer is always production order you fucking retards

Production order means jack shit. You aren't going to get new Gundam for instance by telling them to watch a forty year old anime before the latest installment. Same for Macross. New audiences want what's new. Then and only then if it catches their interest they may explore ancient entries to the franchise. But it's fucking retarted (I'm not suprised since we're on /m/) to tell someone to watch a franchise in production order. That's the quickest way to make him hate it.

Not everyone is in love with ancient animation.
>>
>>14666298
Sure, but the people who don't care about old shit aren't going to be asking about Macross and Gundam. They'll be posting threads about new stuff from the past few years.
>>
>>14666298
I once asked it (in a thread, I didn't make one like everyone seems to do) and blazing through production order introduced me to Gundam and mecha. It was a different experience for sure because I had never watched anything before maybe '94 but it showed me that older animation has nothing to do with quality. Agreed. SDF Macross is one of those shows I feel really deserves a makeover. You don't even need to change the script or the audio at all, but the animation got the shaft the first time around and it really shows.

Which is a shame, because the actual plot is really good and that part holds up.

>>14666582

Posting 1 or 2 sequences that have good animation doesn't invalidate the premise. And that is that globally SDF Macross has low quality animation. All anime series have a couple of good animated episodes at the beginning to hook the audience and then it goes down. Macross follows the same path. But when it hits low quality it's really low. Don't post the first episode or episode 27 (the original final episode) as if that somehow reflected the global quality of the series because it isn't true.
>>
just watch SDF and you are fucking golden
>>
>>14666593
Yes, when you blow the entire show's budget on three scenes then those three scenes look great. Unfortunately, for ever falling catch there's three or four "Max and Mirya knifefight" or "Breetai's amazing 5 second-per-frame pipe attack!" Mobile Suit Gundam's best scenes don't look as good as the best SDF Macross scenes, but at least the show is consistent instead of being abject shit outside of two or three scenes.

Everytime someone says SDF has bad animation some anon comes into the thread posting the same three webms, Miria attacking inside the city, Max dodging missiles from the same episode, and that sequence where Hikaru fires missiles with the super pack on. Those are the only good moments of decent animation from SDF, the rest is pretty mediocre.
>>

Do you have a direct link? It's always funny seeing the stuff where Studio Nue themselves clearly dropped the ball, like when they completely blew Max dogfighting debut.

>>14666630
>Nice damage control though.
Oh, I'm sorry! They suck at managing TIME, not managing MONEY! That totally makes up for the fact that they only managed to produce a few seconds of good animation out of their hours upon hours of crap. All of that awful animation is now much better since I know it was just time being mismanaged instead of money.
>>
>>14666644
when it's not just a still image hovering across the screen the animation in Macross is shit. Don't let these hipster fags jerking off to muh old cartoons let you think otherwise.

That being said, Do You Remember Love? looks like it has fantastic animation.
>>
>>14666630
>It's not about budget.

>The original concept came from the staff at Studio Nue and Artland. Planning was done by Yoshimasa Ohnishi and Studio Nue with screenplays written by Kenichi Matsuzaki. Mechanical animation was directed by Ichiro Itano, mechanical designs were provided by Shoji Kawamori and Kazutaka Miyatake and character designs by Haruhiko Mikimoto, all of Studio Nue. Studio Nue required a big budget for such a show and thus required animation powerhouse Tatsunoko Productions but Tatsunoko also outsourced the work to cheaper studios like Anime Friend and Star Pro. The Big West advertising company financed the show, making it the first of their Super Dimension Trilogy.

>The chief director was the highly experienced Noboru Ishiguro, who had directed Space Battleship Yamato, one of the shows that inspired and influenced young Studio Nue members.

i disagree. Gundam actually has several continuities and timelines that are irrelevant to each other. It's much easier to introduce somebody to Gundam with a newer series since you don't have to watch 0079 or any of the other early-UC stories to get what's happening in IBO, 00, SEED, etc.

It's not that easy with Macross since it all takes place in the continuity. Using pop idols as weapons and the assimilation of Zentraedi into human society makes more sense if you've seen SDF/DYRL.

They like it for the mecha porn, ""the serious atmosphere"", the characters design (they like Sara), the ost and songs (The song "Arkan" from Zero was a french song). Roy focker's nostalgia helped to. Most of them are robotech fag that disliked Macross 7 that came just before it.

I'm fine with Idols. I like Macross. But the music in AKB0048 is garbage tier Jpop recorded in an obviously different audio quality than the voice acting (a worse one, even), the characters rarely do anything interesting and the plot/setting is basically nonexistent.

Maybe the second season is better, but the first season is so amazingly underwhelming that I felt no desire to see any more of it. I kept waiting for something, anything, to happen and it never came.

No no no. I would never recommend anyone that shitty model. It's the most brittle floppy model kit I've ever seen. Want to display it in battroid mode? Have fun pegging the legs back into the nose cone every time you breathe on it. Bandai decided to do a 1:1 application of the VF-1's retarded transformation mechanic with the leg delivery system and it ended horribly. What you get is an unstable piece of trash with very fragile parts.

If you want a decent transformable VF model get one of the Siegfrieds, those at least transform and stay in their modes. If you're not a fan of the VF-31 then there's the VF-25 which is alright but a sticker fest like the VF-31. There's not many choices out there for transforming Macross kits I'm afraid.

Since we have a Macross thread already I'll ask here. I'm almost done with SDF, who's got the best version of DYRL to download?
>>
>>14667184
Plus, later SDF episodes and DYRL also have serious atmosphere
The only reason for Roy to be here is to attract the old fans and so there would be some sort of rivalry between him and that russian. He was pretty boring in Zero.
When I watched Zero, I expected some action and war, not "the mystery of third world sisters".
>>
>>14668599

>>
>>14668599

The only thing Delta achieved was give me a higher opinion of Frontier's handling of the j-pop aspect, because it suddenly seems a lot less awful when compared to Delta.

19/20 volumes. It depends on what they're going to add to the story. There is more Kamujin vs. Max-in-Tomahawk action in the manga than in the anime and the Mars Base staff is alive including Riber. Recently, there is a flashback about the past with a new character. (not in the anime)
