It's been almost 2 month since the last thread began operating, and now with the bump limit reached and it's course toward it's demise, it's time for a new 70s & 80s mecha thread to emerge and continue it's predecessor's task! Been missing lately? The previous thread was there >>14437018.
Most of you already know the rules, right? If not, here's what this thread is for: argue, discuss and dump stuff like artworks, fanarts (if they're well made of course), sketches, magazines' scans, artbooks, DVD/VHS/LD/CD/BD's covers, ads, musics, screen-caps and so on, that have a link to a Sci-Fi and Mecha anime/comic/novel/film/OVA.

Is the original Golion worth checking out if I really like the reboot and have fond memories of watching the Voltron dub? What about Dairugger?
>>
What do you people think of Iczer Robo?
>>
>>14665433
I liked Iczer-1. The first two episodes were cool, but I didn't like that the robot wasn't used in the final fight. I wanted to watch Iczer-3, but someone said that the robot only appears in one of the six episodes, so that soured me on it.
>>
>>14665425
I've watched both, they're okay. They're pretty violent at times, which is fun.

Dairugger was surprisingly cool, like a super robot version of Yamato. The cast is overwhelmingly huge, but the antagonist is good.
>>
>>14665240
Strangely it isn't indexed by Google, which is how I search Bakabt.
Thank you.
>>
>>14665425
>Is the original Golion worth checking out if I really like the reboot and have fond memories of watching the Voltron dub?
yeah, it's a fun pile of gore and dumb
>>
>>14665469
What about the Voltron English adaptations? I know that Golion and Dairugger are astonishingly violent for what they are and Voltron toned it down and made it it's own thing, just wonder how much of Voltron/Golion franchise is worth getting into.
>>
>>14665433
Iczer Robo theme is great:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pyMPhuR9MQs
>>
>>14665484
>worth getting into
It's not like it has an exceptional plot or characters for its genre. The animation is decent though.
I think Golion is maybe only a little above average for its time and mostly remembered for its brief moments of gore.

This is about the goriest it gets.
>>
>>14665517
>It's not like it has an exceptional plot or characters for its genre
Nah I'm not expecting anything better than at most a 5 or 6 out of 10. I am just talking from a fun perspective, because Voltron being possibly the first mecha I ever saw it's always been in my mind the coolest design and made me really love Gattai mecha. So I'm just looking for more of Voltron that I can watch/enjoy that isn't total garbage while I wait for Defender of the Universe to start it's second season.
>>
>>14665524
Just download it and watch the first few episodes.
It has a pretty good theme song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mq9yiKvo7ls
>>
>>14665534
It's pretty high in my list of shows to watch next. Is the Voltron worth watching or checking out after Golion? I find it odd that Voltron is chopped up Golion but there's more episodes. Did they do any original stuff for Voltron or did they REALLY reuse footage?
>>
>>14665541
iirc WEP (the Voltron end of it) commissioned new footage from Korea

I can't speak for the whole series, but I tried a random episode and there were some goofy jokes like the robot monster whatever having an 8ball on the stick shift.
>>
>>14665541
>I find it odd that Voltron is chopped up Golion but there's more episodes
Voltron is chopped up Golion and chopped up Dairugger + some original animation.
I've never seen Voltron, but having seen both Golion and Dairugger they'd have to completely change the plot of either series for it to be a consistent show.
>>
>>14665560
Well Dairugger is mainly a second show referred to as Vehicle Voltron and there were crossovers I believe but the majority of Dairugger was in that second show. If anything I'll check out Golion and maybe Dairugger and if I really want I'll play around with using 80s Voltron as background noise.
>>
>>14665491
Pretty catchy, ten seconds in and I'm hooked.
>>
>>14665438
What order do you watch the Iczers in?
>>
>>14666088
not him, but I think it goes:
Fight Iczer 1
Reborn
iczelion
>>
>>14665547

On that subject, I find it amusing that the only way to watch Bismarck at all is via Saber Rider, plus German dubs for the episodes that never got adapted into English.

>>
SOON.

>>14665560
It's been a long time since I watched Voltron, but from what I remember the only time the two directly crossed over was a direct-to-video special. Fleet of Doom or something.

Other than that, as far as I remember, there was only bits and pieces of Dairugger spliced into the Golion footage as the Earth Federation. Mainly to get around the fact Earth went kablewy in Golion, which they obviously couldn't show in an 80s kid show in the US.

>>14665541
They commissioned new footage after the Golion portions were a massive success.

>>14666088
Iczer 1 -> Iczer 3 -> Iczelion. Iczelion was never finished though, outside of an audio drama, I think?

After that, you're basically done with the franchise outside of a few manga and the Dangaioh crossover audio play.
>>
>>14667152
So is Voltron as fun as Golion or should I expect the worst when I get around to it? I'll be pleased if it's better than he-man tier crap.
>>
>>14666069
Yeah it's catchy as fuck. Then, that's what you get when you hire Michiaki Watanabe to compose your soundtrack.

Thanks dude. I'm currrently on that, Legend of Galactic Heroes, Zeta Gundam, Aura Battler Dunbine and just started City Hunter today.

not too bad
usually regarded as having solid voice acting
there's some content editing, like "Wow this tank I'm about to throw a grenade in sure is piloted by robots and not people" type stuff, the Doctor drinks "spring water" rather than sake, and the mascot robot's zany molestation of the girl gets cut
>>
>>14673879
>Dunbine

It get's a lot of flak but I really dug it personally. I wish we could get another show set in Byston Well. The OVAs are alright I guess, not counting the dub for Garzey which is pretty legendary.

Dunbine is the shit. By far my favorite Tomino show.

It's a shame that nobody's willing to translate the Aura Battler Senkei novels, though. Hell, the anime itself needs a brand new translation too, honestly. The ADV subs are fucking terrible.

just more motivation to learn moonrunes, I guess.
>>
>>14673932
Yea there's a lot of /m/ related novels I wish I could read lol. Maybe one day.
>>
>>14673932
I love the Byston Well setting and imagery used in Dunbine. Hell, I even liked Rean and found myself enjoying Garzey's.

The mother daughter relationship in Dunbine was the most fucked up thing Tomino's done.
>>
>>14673736
Only a handful left to do.

>>14673906
>the Doctor drinks "spring water" rather than sake
In fairness to that, it adds more emotional weight to the context of the scene.

If you're going to buy from Yahoo Auctions JP don't use Buyee. Their shipping prices are ridiculous
>>
>>14670725
For me it's both hilarious and somewhat touching. Anyway I love that episode, it's good.
>>
>>14665433
First one is really cool. Animation is pretty stiffy, but the over-the-top shading makes up for it in how it actually fits the style they're going for (body horror, grimdark, gory, suspense), and not just because. First one is the best fleshed out one, too.

Iczer-3 is alright, has a really good OP theme, but seems to drag out for some reason at one point. Also, Iczer-3's VA is on par with Aisha's from SEED.

Iczelion is awesome, and has the best animation and style out of the three in terms of fluidity and consistency in its animation, but goddamn doesn't it feel like a huge fucking blueballing. Soundtrack is top notch, though, and I am positive we were going to get a team of Iczer Robos, but since Hirano has never finished most of his stuff since that project, we'll never know.
>>
>>14678701
Who's your preferred proxy?
>>
>>14681125
FromJapan. They occasionally do 5% off sales where non-auction items are off 5% and on auctions that you win, you get 5% of the winning bid back to you

I have a friend who was using Buyee to get ahold of the incredibly rare Japanese Ulysses 31 OST, and they overcharged him on the shipping when they shouldn't have (especially for a CD)...
>>
>>14681819

How do I use those proxy services anyway? Do I have to pay the yen or do they just convert my usd into yen when the proxy orders the product?
>>
>>14681855
It's pretty simple, actually. You put in money into your account with PayPal or with a credit card and it gets converted to yen since that's what you need to bid on the auctions.
>>

Kek I alway loved the way they advertise the superimpose feature of the X1 in that ad, there's no better way to sell your machine than showing that you can make Lum real.As for the superimpose feature itself, it was kinda needed, as sharp designed the X1 as a video/graphic computer (a bit like the sony SMC-70). But anyway, some /m/ stuff on this machine :

Does anyone feel like there's a massive jump in storytelling between the 70s and the 80s/90s?
There were some shows in the 70s that tried to do more serious drama and characterization, but they fell flat.
Only OG Gundam really worked for me in that regard.

Is it all just budget?
70s still has the best colours though in my opinion.

I can see where Inafune, the creator of Megaman, got the ideas for Megaman X from.

Casshan = Megaman X
Buraiking Boss = Sigma

Barashin, Arkborn, and Sagrey = Serges, Agile, and Violen from Megaman X2

I dunno where Zero's from, though.

The model don't look as good as the boxart. Weirdly enough, for the Zeta one it's the other way around, the model look better (though that might be because I don't like the Zeta girl boxart).

I don't think I've seen pics other than the ones on the box of the kit, either for the art or photos of the kit.

But yeah the models look goofy as fuck from what I can tell.

A jillion years ago I passed up the Valkyrie Lady for fifteen bucks. In theory I missed out but in practice I probably still wouldn't have built it and even then it would look like shit, so I'm not really that irked I didn't get it.

Well, I don't think they really look bad either (especially the Zeta one), I think that with the right painting skills (and a magnifying glass for the eyes -- the eyes seems kinda messed up on the Zeta girl) and the right pose you can give them a decent look (the valkyrie one is really ackward).
In pic related the MkII girl doesn't look bad imo.

Here's to hoping Big Nova can actually find a translator for Strada 5. Translators for old toku aren't easy to come by.

How are the subs for the 70's Tekkaman?

I need to watch more of that show.

Episode 21 of Robot Detective is out, although it's on Hi no Tori's site this time. Only 5 left though!

Not great, but not terrible.
Not nearly as bad as Getter Robo or Grendizer.

Subs never though

A few years ago the first episode was available subbed on youtube, but yeah, it would be better to learn runes to watch this show in the near future.

At the moment, I'm getting the show timed and typesetted. It's not a hassle, since it's only 13 episodes.

Lol what.
What's this from? Is it just like a tech demo for Sunrise to show off their animation skills?
>>
>>14801105
Should I watch the series or can I just watch the OVA?
>>
>>14832024
The first OVA is just a bad recap film. The second OVA is a different canon.

So no.
>>
>>14831345
Don't forget how Soltic has tentacles now, Dougram fights ayylmaos, and they're doing it all in space.
>>
>>14832838
>tentacles
More like double gouf whips.
>>
>>14832848
Man I shoulda thought of that.
In my memory the whips always come out of the Soltic's wrist machine gun ports instead of the under-arm things in the actual short, so that there's like four of them.
>>
>>14832024
You're better off with the show.
>>
How is voltes and combattler?
>>
>>14834392
Voltes V is bretty good, if simplistic in terms of characterization on the hero side. Combattler V is fine until the second half, not helped by having Godmars' head writer among the other writers of the show.
>>
>>14834392
I'm 20-odd eps into the dub, I've enjoyed it so far.
>>
>>14834517
>Combattler V is fine until the second half
Agreed. It should've ended after the first 26 episodes.
>>
Anybody have a link for the OST of Megazone 23 Part 1?
>>
>affected by the X Nebula
oh yeah that thing
I thought that wandered off like their super-communication headsets and megaguns.
>>
>>14834392
Voltes is alright.

>>14836916
I've mentioned it in passing in Dougram threads way back but the X Nebula does kinda become irrelevant to Combat Armors. After the Blockhead T10C comes around I suppose there wasn't much stopping other Combat Armors from being similarly protected.
>>
>>14836963

The X-Nebula exists as a quick handwave to explain why there are Combat Armors punching and pulling wrasslin' moves on each other instead of the Federation BTFOing everything with long-range artillery or Combat Armor fights being two units exchanging fire from very far away.

It's basically the Minovsky particles of Dougram, but unlike Gundam, there isn't 35+ years of lore to make it seem more scientific than it really is and to make it look like less of a handwave.

Dunno, if i should ask somewhere else, but I've watched Braiger recently (and it was pretty good except for robot fighting scenes) and found some news dated 2014 that 4th J9 series called 'Jinraiger' should have been launched 2016 year. Any new info about Jinraiger, cosmorangers?

it amazes me that people will bid over $60 for the LP version when the CD version contains a ton of unreleased music not featured in the original vinyl release
>>
>>14842963
Yes, though IIRC at that particular moment they were discussing something else regarding comms.
I remember that messenger guy showing up prominently twice, once whilst relaying orders for them to attack an oncoming convoy, and another time giving them orders to attack a radio outpost. I think that screencap's from the second one but I can't quite remember.
>>
So, I want to watch Iczer-3, but I heard that there's only robots in one episode. This has really killed my interest, is this true?
>>
>>14837242
> and found some news dated 2014 that 4th J9 series called 'Jinraiger' should have been launched 2016 year. Any new info about Jinraiger, cosmorangers?

The original 2014 press release was very early in the projects life cycle. The announcement that it was actually going to be made was only made in December last year: http://www.jinraiger.com/archives/911

They post status updates on their site once a month which often consists of a a quick blurb about the state of things (mostly vague information about the workings of the production committee), shilling out things for fans (weekly Niconico videos, fan events) followed by maybe some art or an episode synopsis.
>>
>>14843808
I recall seeing him more than that, but it's been a bunch of years since I watched the show, so my memory might be playing tricks.
>>
>>14819707
I'm surprised it hasn't gotten subs, I mean the western adaptation did pretty well.
>>
>>14847870
At least the German game makers are finally making progress with their Saber Rider project for once, so that may raise awareness (shame about not getting funding for a Japanese dub though).
>>
>>14847870
As far as I know there are other shows with a good western adaptation that haven't been subbed either.
>>
>>14831345
I don't think it's to show off their animation, seeing how they reused the some parts twice.

Does anyone know what mech model that guy have on his shelf? I can't recognize it, and I'm pretty sure it's from another comic/show (he already have a Gundam mk.II model, a Dirty Pair Kei figure and a Zeta Gundam poster).

It looks like something out of Dunbine or L-gaim.

>>14853601
8bit
>>
>>14855104
Nah, not dunbine, this kind of panels on the back, the shield and the cannon look nothing like what i've seen in dunbine. As for L-Gaim, I haven't watched it yet so it might come from it yeah.
>>
>>14855146
As someone who has watched L-Gaim no, it does not look like any Heavy Metals, though the style of the robot gives me heavy Nagano vibes.

Somehow I missed this, but new Ga-Keen ep.

https://luurah.wordpress.com/2016/10/15/magnerobo-ga-keen-06/
>>
>>14856279
Yeah it's pretty short. It's okay, Maina is cute, but she's a bit too dumb, and sometimes become unsufferable (especially in the last part). Her friend is cuter and an overall more likeable character.
>>
>>14855119
Yup, the MSX is an 8bit computer architecture.
As for Gall Force, they made a few plastic models for ads of Sony's MSX2 Hit-Bit line.
