It was an episode showing the characters pre-Walkure (well, pre Walkure in it's final form) and the literal transformation of their minds by even brief exposure to Mikumo. In an episode where we find out the antagonists are perusing something that may completely control or reshape the thinking of minds on a universal scale

I think this was, on its own, a good episode. But its a bad episode in this progression.

The flashbacks to walkures formation are fine, but we are so long past the point of any of this shit being relevant its not even funny. This is a sequence we should have gotten, like, around when Messer died. Its just been so long since Walkure was relevant in their original role that how they got their doesn't matter, any most of this information has already been hinted at anyway. We didn't even really get any emotional payoff for the past hate between Pink and Green, we just sort of confirmed that they used to argue but now they are friends but in the least satisfying way possible.

The windemere side of the plot progressed nicely, but the whole Mikumo arc is taking PAINFULLY long. They manged to squeeze 4 goddamn episodes out of "I think there is something up with Mikumo, you guys".

Aside from the Windemere portion, this is all shit that should have either happened much earlier in the show, or simply taken less actual screentime to happen.

That said, I still enjoyed it much more than the other recent episodes. Which, I'm sad to say, turns out to be because Hayate and Freya were not in it. Their absence was the single greatest pro that this episode had, and I didn't even realize I wasn't enjoying their plotline anymore until I notice how much I was enjoying their absence.

Still, the scenario for the first cour had momentum so we proceeded to make it into two cours in a way that that would build up from it.

If BigWest wants to avoid any legal cases from HG it's not enough to change trademarked names. HG claims they hold copyright for design of VF-1s, they even tried to sue Hasbro with it. So Big West would need to cut all scenes which feature VF-1 (or VF-0 since it's so similar). That's majority of Macross Zero, few scenes in 7 and Delta's episode 3.

Eh, I'd argue that being involved in the military(private or not) is somewhat suicidal in Macross-verse. You're probably safe if you're serving on a Battle-class/Macross, but even then there are Macrosses and Battle-classes that were destroyed.

In the grand scale of things Macross doesn't really do much defensive shit because of how good their guns are. VFs are considered relatively fragile machines among the various mecha franchises because they fight things(Even other VFs) that shred what protection VFs have, and the protection they have is actually pretty good compared to the defenses some mecha have.
The best protection they have is PPB, and its limited by how much power the engines/capacitors can give to the system, which isn't a lot if they are under sustained or heavy firepower. Even a 171 can overload the 31's PPB with its gunpod.
Energy converting armor? Again, it relies on power from the engines. If the PPB is overloaded, you're kind of fucked anyway, ECA isn't gonna do much at that point.

VFs dodge more than they block, and when they block, its because they have to do it, like Hayate having to block shots intended for Freyja

Take the VF-25(even by Delta it should still be considered high end hardware) for example.
Ozma's VF-25S, the commander variant which is probably the highest spec(Not by much compared to the other variants, but still) variant of the VF-25, with the armor pack which adds more protection via more ECA on the pack and power for the PPB.
He took a hit from the heavy Vajra's beam cannon with his PPB, the shot got mitigated by the PPB but still punched through it, destroying one of the wing mounted armor pack parts completely, and it injured Ozma in the cockpit.
The VF can still fly and fight, but I doubt it can take another hit.

It's not only price. It's just like in real world we have fighter (for air-to-air), and attack/bomber planes (for hitting ground targets). Specializing on one thing is always better than trying to do everything equally bad.

For example YF-29 should be way to heavy to fight against regular VFs effectively. Its extremely heavy quantum beam is completely useless against VFs. And all the additional missile launchers are just dead weight too because missile spam is useless against skilled pilots. Even with 4 engines it probably will be easily outmanoeuvred and destroyed by more light VFs.
