It's really rather nice but it suffers from its production history.
What you describe is a result of Giant Robo basically being a compilation of various Yokoyama works all at once.

What you have to realise is that even though it is called Giant Robo, you are actually watching the League of Extraordinary Yokoyama Manga. When you read Mars and Babel two and all the rest and see this it's actually unbelievable that it exists. It is actually a time where people said what if X creator had all Y of series in one OVA/Movie. All the Robots, all the characters are taken from like dozens of series. it is also basically the last, greatest, longest and unsuccessful Original Video Animations done with Cell based techniques. They mention that in the span of production the industry went from entirely Cell to like 60%-40$ with stuff like Ghost in the Shell and Mononoke coming out.

Robo gets a proper fight in every single episode except 4, and even then he saves the day there. He doesn't have quite the significance in the show that the title would suggest but he's still a major part of it. People saying the show shouldn't be called Giant Robo at all are really blowing it out of proportion.

You could always watch GR, but you'd have to learn Japanese since no one ever subbed it and anyone who tries gets subninjas.

All the other fights are very slow paced, and mostly consist of Robo throwing one punch after a bunch of back and forth dialogue. Giant Robo gets better on rewatch. I dare call it a visual and storytelling masterpiece.

LOGH is just a so-so adaptation of the novels, and other high budgeted productions like Gundam Unicorn just blows ass. Kek at the guy saying it's on the level of that crap.

Mazinkaiser SKL is nowhere near Giant Robo, but it's also not operating on the same wavelength. It's an unfair comparison. The ginrei ovas sure is comparable, since it had a Go Nagai / Ken Ishikawa looking mech in one of the episodes.

Giant Robo has precisely zero flaws, it is the best super robot anime of all time. It perfectly encapsulates more than just Yokoyama's work, it is a beautiful microcosm of the whole genre.
