However the point is that the nigga looks and acts old as fuck, nobody ever comments about his age or anything and you never get the sense that he's "young" which is what a 20 year old pilot objectively is.

And that's how tons of anime is. You tend to get the vibe that a character is like 4-8 years older than they actually turn out to be when they print the stats. That's because in anime high school is the center of the universe, so they portray high schoolers like they're college age and college age like they're late 20s/early 30s.

I think you might be confused. I used LOTGH as an example of something which doesn't have especially unrealistic ages for its characters. There's Julian and Reinhard, Julian being a good candidate for an audience-insert, but they're the exception, unlike in UC Gundam or Wing. If LOTGH is YA, then that just shows that the target age group is irrelevant to what ages characters have to be.
