Tatsunoko wasn't allowed to use her design in the Sentinels cartoon they were making, nor any of the other Macross characters, so they changed her up a little. The Sentinels comics are goddamn trip. Like, SDF Macross is kinda weird what with its giant space tunas so Robotech is also kinda weird since it's just Macross for kiddies but the Sentinels take it to a whole different level.

All of the comics are trippy, even the novels since all of the Eternity/Academy published stuff is based around them. There is a thing called 'protoculture shapings' where people are 'morphed' by intense exposure to protoculture and it gives them psychic abilities, seeing the future, and shit. Pretty much turning them into newtypes.

...At least the one of the Wildstorm comics- Prelude to the Shadow Chronicles I think- did a decent job of retconning all the previous Sentinels bullshit into something at least digestible. The godawful spandex uniforms went out the window, the aliens were redesigned to look less ridiculous, and I don't feel like my brain needed bleaching after reading them. Not that they were works of art or anything...

...and don't even get me started on the novels. I'm still wondering what the fuck I was actually reading. Especially #18, End of the Circle. Jesus Christ. And the other Robotech comics... If indie comic artists weren't on some pretty strong drugs back in the 90s, they were at least 50% crazier than the current generation.

They really didn't retcon much of anything except changing character designs for obvious design polishing and copyright/licensing reasons, and changing the timeline to fast-forward everything so that the conflicts to the other alien worlds could be resolved (which was also to explain why everyone was so goddamn old). The comics point out that the Expeditionary force has been fighting "decades of struggle" in space and the first issue, for the most part, sequels the final Sentinels comic before the whole series got cancelled. Its very much implied that most of the events in the original Sentinels pretty much still happened, and Prelude requires much of its story to exist in order to have a leg to stand on.

Besides, its not like the paranormal-scifi-woowoo of protoculture ever disappeared or anything. Even in the original Robotech series, Dana gets exposed to a pure dose of Flower of Life which causes her Zentraedi half-breed cells to go all hicky-dickey and giving her a psychic vision of her younger sister from deep space. There's also Rand's psychic hullicination in New Generation where spores from Invid protoculture farms give him visions of why the Invid are on Earth and giving him that medieval mental high. Not to mention that the Tirolian clones have to be soothed by music because their genetic makeup of protoculture reacts to it. Where do you think these writers and artists got it in their heads to write protoculture off the way they did? Its pretty much always been magic whether certain fans or the current creative team wants to acknowledge it or not.
