I just finished it a few weeks ago for the first time (still need to get on the OVA's just been busy) and it was good, real good.

Good mecha action, interesting story which has a decent mystery though out the majority of it.

Got a bit weird in the end but in a good way imho.

Also great mecha designs.

Do I have to watch any of the mainline Votoms for Armor Hunter or can I just jump into it?

I watched Votoms a year ago.
I like it and I'm a bit worried about the OVA and stuff.
What should I watch and in what order ?

Every episode, especially the first arc, follow the same setup:

>first half of episode - setup
>following commercial break - sneaky theme
>followed by action theme
>followed by getaway theme, dust settles, next episode setup
>roll credits

It got to the point where I could predict the minute a certain theme would play, or expect when there was a change of plans. Don't get me wrong, the overall plot is great, but the episodes are pretty formulaic in the first arc

I'm near ep 20. I'm really enjoying it so far. Animation is kinda choppy and weirdly edited at times. That's my only nit pick

Mellowlink is a 'side-story' made after the original series (and the first three or four OAVs), so you can set is aside for a while. Its plotline is not connected to the Chirico saga, though you may spot him briefly in one episode.
