Cause at the time MS to MS melee combat was rare enough and they probably didn't have the material to make full size swords until CB showed up with their magic particle based technology.

They had plasma swords but not full sized swords.

00 was a series that had really cool looking grunt mecha. S2 took a shit on that by having everyone just use GN-Xs

The GN-Xs were fine at the end of S1, but I wanted each nation to use the GN tech and make something original. I know there was a united government but I always felt that the same companies that manufactured the Flags, Enacts, and Tierens would be competing to build the next generation of mobile suits.
