Watched the first Daimajin movie after a guy mentioned the trilogy a few threads ago and it was great. The story was very basic and the synopsis basically reveals everything that happens already, but holy crap the atmosphere created by the set design, camera angles and music is absolutely fantastic.

Contrary to popular belief ("all humans in Godzilla movies are boring/ no one cares about the humans"), I think several films boast some strong characters. Not strong in the sense that they're fully fleshed. But that they're genuinely interesting/likeable and manage to hold my attention until the monsters arrive on the scene. And the characters not getting thoroughly explored is compensated for by the focus on an ensemble cast (staple of the franchise) and having the right balance of monster/human screen time.

Anyway, I think this holds true for most of Honda's early entries (which had the advantage of having some great actors and actresses at their disposal), a couple of Fukuda's films (Gigan), Hedorah, Biollante, vs King Ghidorah, Godzilla 2000, and GMK.

That never happened though, he just sat there in the flaming remains of the town roaring at the sky. Which was actually better, especially the way the camera was zoomed out to make him look small and helpless yet still going "BRING IT ON BITCHES" in spite of it all.

People say it was a cliffhanger and should've been continued, but while I've not read any official comments (just second-hand claims of what Kaneko & Higuchi said which I've learned to not take seriously because the internet loves half-truths and lies) I think it worked brilliantly as the actual ending and would not be surprised if that was how it was meant to end. From what I've been able to see/hear it seems like he started as small microorganisms which then clumped together and grew. They became something amphibious in nature [porous, gelatinous, easily absorbing skin] and emerged from the water.

It's never directly seen as far as I can tell but there are several scenes in the film that imply people go missing wherever Godzilla shows up. Then you get the final scene with the humanoid Godzilla skeletons and the human skull growing in his tail tip as well as various human-like rib cage growths. The movie is trying very hard to say that Godzilla is a creation of man gone rampant and that it is feeding and growing off of mankind.

Of course autists will say he's not eating people and it's all a coincidence and that the tail is not a face/mouth.

He becomes bipedal from absorbing humanoids and he begins budding from there to replicate others that match his current DNA better. All we see from the budding humanoids is an implication of movement with them reaching skyward and trying to pull away from the tail. Do you think the buds will be independent life forms, or some kind of organic drones he can control? I'm leaning towards the former from a story-telling perspective, since that would give a script-writer a handy way to introduce other via personalized evolution.

That might take too much significance away from Godzilla himself though, and I'm not sure if that's the direction Toho wants to take him in after their counsel meeting awhile back. The drone idea would lend itself to sequel escalation very handily, and hopefully they'll come up with an excuse for him to surpass the 120 meter limit by a wide margin.


One last question, and this is for everyone: I've heard a rumor that there are lines of dialogue saying that blackouts happen before Godzilla reaches an area, implying he's sucking up the energy, but I can't find anything backing that up. Does any of that sound familiar?
