It was a disaster because everybody wanted it to do something of everything. The military wanted it to carry their satellites and stuff, despite it being operated by a non-military organization. In the end, the shuttle was a compromised design, a jack of all trades and master of none.

On the other hand, the idea behind grappler ships is sound, especially for Newton's Third Law.

In an age where space craft allowed people to explore the far reaches of space and pirates were reborn, they just took the idea from regular old EVA craft and scaled it up a bit.

Pirates are out to rob shit, rather that blow you to pieces they'd prefer to grab you, board your ship to kill everyone then steal the lot. It's also an age of anti-missiles, decoys, missile defense systems, energy barriers (very rare), advanced sensor jamming suites, and very fucking fast engines.

It's only really pirates and certain outlaws who bothered with grappler arms, space forces don't bother and just use big guns.

Can I grapple Aisha?
