I've only seen it and the movie.
It was an okay show. It made me curious about seeing more, but I wouldn't ever consider watching it again unless I get to Exodus and find that I've forgotten all the plot points.

Pretty great overall, lots of attention to nice character development throughout the series. But a much better experience a second go around especially after having watched Exodus and noticing all the little parallels Ubakata made.

Do I have to watch it before Exodus?

Yes. It's all one continuous story, instead of separate universes like Gundam or something.

Watch order is Dead Aggressor(1st season) -> Right of Left (OVA) -> Heaven and Earth (Movie) -> Exodus
