By all accounts, it's not a good game. It's main problems are that it's really repetitive and you can't play locally with a friend.
That said, I enjoyed it as a Godzilla simulator. If you've ever wanted to be the guy in the suit trashing tokyo without the hot stage lighting and burning squibs, this game certainly lets you live out that fantasy.

> After the end of the film, Shimamoto said, "We have all been rolled around in the palm of Anno's hand. We have all been defeated by Anno. Since we were defeated here, we gave Anno our energy, and now he has to make a 2nd and 3rd Godzilla film for us!"

> Then, Hideaki Anno made his surprise appearance. Shimamoto hadn't been told that Anno would be coming, so when he first saw him, he was so shocked that he fell to his knees.

> Shimamoto fired off several rapid questions for Anno, asking, "Can you still make good films? Will you still make them? Ones that feel as good as the one we just watched?"

> Anno calmly replied, "I'm decisively neutral." He then said to Shimamoto, "You haven't been defeated...That's a very soulless thing to say (laughs)," and then shook his hand.

> Finally, Shimamoto yelled out in front of the crowd, "Anno! It's my loss!" and a commemorative photo was taken of him, Anno, and Mafia Kajita, a well-known video game developer who was also in attendance.

Anno Godzilla Trilogy when? And how long afterwards until Anno's take on Ultraman? Evangelion fans are gonna get pissed.

>Metallic membrane covering eye

Godzilla doesn't want to watch the destruction he'll cause with his holocaust gas attack

The absolute madman
>>
>>14632697
So, he starts breathing fire and then focusses it like a torch to create a giant plasma beam? And he also coats his eyeballs in mercury or something to keep from blinding/melting his own eyes out of his skull?

How the fuck is he supposed to aim/use that thing if it's basically blind-fire?
>>
>>14632780
>How the fuck is he supposed to aim/use that thing if it's basically blind-fire?

Why would he *need* to? Also, nictitating membrane. He can see through it juuuuust fine. Animals have them for protection.
>>
>>14632780
I gotta go with the other guy on this one, Godzilla's colossal and seems to desire wanton destruction, it could be flailing its head willy-nilly and with a beam like that it'd still achieve what it desires.
And then the back lasers and tail laser come into play
>>

>How the fuck is he supposed to aim/use that thing if it's basically blind-fire?

as much as I like anno's weirdness, I'm also glad this is a one off film

I only want to see strong adult godzilla wrecking stuff!
>>
>>14632794
>durrrr

He slices through the bombers easily. His back beam targets and destroys a single tiny drone while he's dormant.
>>
>>14632802
my argument was that he doesn't need to aim. HE can aim, that much is certain, the main use of the back spines is to testroy incoming explosives, but my oint against yours that the requirement wasn't there.
I do not know "how" hit aims, but I know it does not need to, which was the argument in question. Am I wrong in this regard?

>>14632799
that is the "adult" one, even though we know it's not at its true final stage, if it even has one.
>>
>>14632750
whats with all the explosions in this film? they all look flat and low energy like 90s videogame sprites

it lacks the bright white core, illumination and everything else

I still prefer physical effects

>>
>>14632812
I know thats the adult form
I'm saying I don't want to see baby godzillas in future films
>>
>>14632785
I'm fine with animals seeing through clear membranes of skin, Godzilla's is metallic and mirror-sheen/chrome, that's reflecting a lot of light, not passing through light.

I sincerely doubt the metallic eye cover is a 1 way mirror.

"Being the highest grossing Godzilla film in Japan, it has also stomped the attendance records of the Millennium series. The highest attendance for the last Toho era was Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah's (2001) 2.4 million. Shin Godzilla attendance currently sits at a 2.59 million and is on pace to finish around 3.5+ which is over 500,000 more than originally projected and places it in the middle of the highly successful Heisei series."

So apparently it's doing really really good, though it's probably not the best. Of all time anyways.

>>
>>14633679
I'd say if Godzilla existed in real life, he would probably have an exploitable weakness. There's really no creature on Earth that is invincible to everything... but this is Godzilla we're talking about, his entire existence is based on the principal that he defies all logic and reason. So, even a hypothetical real-life Godzilla is impossible since the ways we know how the Earth and the universe in general works. The only things we can't explain are more ethereal than anything else and don't really have a concrete form to observe with the naked eye.

TF: Prime also got reckless with the budget from what I read, even though the show didn't have many characters to animate. Hence why TF: RID went with a simpler cel-shaded look and a mixture of 2D and 3D imagery. But RID is also more comical, so the look fits.

Wonder what direction this is gonna take.

I think I like that better than the same title getting recycled for different projects. Or Anno's approach can be taken. Just make sure it translates into other cultures well. There's also the tried and true _ VS _ naming convention.

Not sure how I feel about that. Don't hate it, though I'm not the biggest fan of that style.Personally, I would have preferred some great traditional animation. But it's not Berserk (2016), so I guess I'll be satisfied.

I'm talking about their art & animation capabilities, not the writing. In terms of the motion during fights the Genndy show was what Samurai Jack should've always been.

>>
>>14634711
The animation in it was phenominal. The art style is signature Genndy, which is great but not exactly my favorite.
>>
>>14634775
Honestly I feel Genndy's art is better suited for comedy than more serious action shows, Dexter's Lab is probably his best show in terms of art

But the animation in Clone Wars was good; I'm not sure how they could squeeze that level of motion out of Rough Draft Koreans (maybe the main staff were involved & guiding them more than usual) but it had the kind of well-timed action animation with actual impact that you rarely see in American cartoon fight scenes. Samurai Jack was mostly way floatier but there were exceptions like the Ultra Robots episode

So far we have Hideaki Anno and Gen Urobuchi getting to leave their marks on the franchise.

Would anyone like to see Shusuke Kaneko get another shot?

Also, allegedly, Akira Kurosawa expressed interest in directing a Godzilla film back in the 60s. But Toho was afraid of what that might cost and wouldn't allow it. Kurosawa films had larger budgets than Godzilla films and putting the two together would have definitely resulted in even greater expenses.

What did you find disappointing about GMK? I felt some of the effects looked rushed (Mothra randomly turns transparent when viewed from inside that one building for example and I recall one shot where the electricity around Godzilla's body could've clearly used more frames) and it would've benefit from more Shinji Higuchi input, but I thought it was good overall; I liked the self-aware and comedic yet-not-outright-ironic atmosphere, the monsters looking cartoonier than usual (which fit the atmosphere) and the action was very well-executed at times. It didn't feel as polished as the Gamera films but it worked well.

Not the anon you were responding to, but for whatever reason, GMK felt stifled... the cut corners and rushed schedule only added to that and it didn't feel like the Gamera series at all... I personally felt disappointed when I saw it because I loved the Gamera series and wanted to see how he handled Godzilla. I dunno, maybe it's just me or maybe the way Kadokawa and Toho worked were too different for me to see a comparable amount of enjoyment between the two. Also, for whatever reason, I didn't like Otani's score on GMK at first. It took me quite a while to warm up to it, unlike the Gamera series soundtrack, which I fell in love with immediately.

And I'm not even a diehard Gamera fan. I grew up watching all the Showa Godzilla films and only learned of Gamera by chance when I caught the TV premiere of Guardian of the Universe on Showtime after reading about it in a TV Guide a month ahead of its airing in 1997. This then led me to the Showa Gamera movies, which I like just as well, but I have much more nostalgia and love for the Showa Godzilla movies. Gamera was fun to watch just as an alternative to the Godzilla series. Only other movies that were comparable with Godzilla movies were the few King Kong films they'd air (including Mighty Joe Young and other unrelated Ray Harryhausen films like Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, Five Million Miles to Earth, and The Valley of Gwangi).
>>
GMK would have been so much better with Varan and Baragon.

Of the Heisei and Millennium films, GMK was one of the few entries to feel ambitious and energetic. It kind of harkens back to the works of Honda and Tsuburaya.

Final Wars attempted something different. However its existence is a reminder that different isn't necessarily good. And somehow FW managed to look cheaper than its immediate predecessors despite having twice the budget.
>>
>>14635135
>And somehow FW managed to look cheaper than its immediate predecessors despite having twice the budget.
I'm sure a lot of it went into creating the suits. There's a lot of monsters in that movie, and a lot of complicated miniatures too.
>>
>>14635087
I think you may have gone in with the wrong mindset. As soon as I started watching GMK I noticed the performances were much more exaggerated than even the silliest human in 90s Gamera. That suggested that it was going for a much sillier and more over-the-top tone; the cartoonier look of the monster suits, the many instances of dark humor along with subtler things like how Godzilla's suit actor walked around only served to confirm it.

Gamera was about taking an utterly ridiculous series that everyone laughed at & making it as serious as you can make a men-in-suits monster film while GMK was doing something very different.

Of the heisei & millenium stuff I've seen I liked GMK & the Kiryu films the most. The 1984 film was alright, Biollante was a bizarre mix of fantastically creative decisions and really poor ones and I didn't even finish Ghidorah (lost interest when they straight up forgot to draw his beams in one scene). Millenium-wise I've only seen the Kiryu films & GMK which as I've said were good. GMK I've already explained why I liked, 2002's action could've used better direction but it worked pretty well overall as a story, 2003 just worked very well on most levels. The human stuff was charming, the monster action was better than 2002, it just came together to form a pretty well done children's film. It was safe but good.

Is there anything else worth watching from those two eras?

Hmm. Never really saw it that way before... I guess you're right. It makes sense to me now. I guess it was just that juxtaposition that bothered me... but there's also some seriousness in the movie that kinda clashes with the humor and cartoonishness... And GMK feels a lot longer than most Godzilla films despite being the same length as any other in the series. But whenever I watch it, it feels like it keeps going on and on forever. Guess I just wasn't in the mood for it since 2000 and Megaguirus was pretty ridiculous and Showa-esque. I probably would've liked GMK better if it had been more grounded and serious since the only experience I had with Kaneko beforehand was the Gamera series.

I think it's difficult to adapt a one-off Godzilla film in the Showa era style when it's long past the Showa era... I mean, the style of the Showa series was an evolution and had some continuity between films. But if you start from point zero again and try to establish a corny Showa theme, it doesn't really work as well. If anything, it's probably better to just leave out any hints at Godzilla's origin or constructing a new alternate history for him within the film. It's one of the reasons I like Godzilla 2000 (or at least, the original non-Sony version), because it has no connection to the other films and comes off more as a standalone feature without any sequel baiting and whatnot. It still could've been handled better and the effects were rushed and questionable (that full CG Godzilla underwater and the terrible compositing on Godzilla in the river when the Millennian UFO scans him), but at least it was a nice one-off adventure that could work as an introductory movie for anyone curious about Godzilla.

While some elements were similar (the way a lot of characters took the serious situation in a comically stupid way) I don't think GMK was going for outright Showa-era humor. For one the fights were never outright slapsticky; more anime-esque, exaggerated but in a badass way as opposed to a comical way.

It wasn't entirely comical or entirely serious. The main characters were meant to be genuinely charming and you were supposed to root for them but I don't think you were meant to shed tears for the girl in the hospital or the guy that screams "GOJIRA!!!" and gets flattened by his foot because the set-up was too comedic.

Godzilla vs Destoroyah. Thematically, it's a direct sequel to the original, the human drama is believable, the special effects are cool (heh), and the monster action is some of the best, imo.
>>
>>14635412
> the human drama is believable

You're setting our favorite critic up for failure. Destoroyah's human drama is sort of underwhelming. In a film where the world might come to a fiery end, the characters are rather nonchalant about things. For the most part, it's your standard late Heisei affair until the third act.
>>
>>14635412
Godzilla vs Destroyah is something of a "meh" to me. It was a legitimate complaint that '98 spent a quarter of the film trying to replicate the Velociraptor Scenes from Jurassic Park. While GvD is nowhere near as bad of a film, it still commits the same sin in it's attempts to replicate sequences from Aliens in the battles between humans and Juvenile Destroyahs.

And while the human drama while not nearly as horribly done as GvSG, it still isn't too inciting in my opinion, either. I agree with >>14635422
on how nonchalant the characters are. There was a legitimately apocalyptic tone in '54. There's only a lackluster attempt to replicate that in GvD.

I did enjoy the final battle, though. Godzilla at 1200 degrees was an amazing sequence to watch.

What's the general opinion on the '56 Rodan here? I thought it was pretty great. Even with all the visible wires on the main monster it has some of Tsuburaya's best miniature destruction scenes and the story works well. The dead serious, post Godzilla '54 atmosphere is interesting to go back to after watching a bunch of the more self-aware and wacky 60s movies and it had good pacing and build-up. Introducing one monster type and setting them up as a significant threat only to have your main monster appear as a baby and eat them as if they're insignificant grubs was a great choice.

Kurosawa's Godzilla idea was Godzilla's Revenge, which is why it's funny everyone hates it.. He let Honda role with it. Dodeskaden uses a similar plot.
>>
>>14635611
I haven't seen it for quite some time but I have the warmest memory of the film, itself. It may have tried to do too much, though, in having what started out as something akin to a mystery film morphing into a more generic Kaiju film. However, as I said before, I haven't seen the film for some time so it may have been executed incredibly well.
>>
>>14635617
>oh no this guy doesn't fit the strawman I made for him, better shitpost
I thought Rodan and 90s Gamera were good for very similar reasons; age doesn't even play a huge part because the best effects of 90s Gamera were the old-school ones. Shinji Higuchi has a bizarrely positive opinion of the 3DCG (the Gyaos in Iris were well animated though, I'll give him that)
>>14635632
I see what you mean but I think the ending and the level of detail and the cinematograhpy of the destruction scenes made it go above being a "generic kaiju film" in the final stretch.
>>
>>14635644
>"generic kaiju film"

I articulated myself poorly there. It's "generic" only in the reference to the works Honda was putting out in the same time at the same time, most if not all of which featuring amazing cinematography and attention to detail.

You fit the strawman you made of yourself.

By the way, still waiting for your reasons why Heisei Gamera is better than Showa Rider. Do you have any reasons beyond le boring moralfag meme you picked up from /v/
>>
>>14635672
I haven't seen enough to be certain of this, but I think Tsuburaya played a significant part in that. Watching Destroy All Monsters after a bunch of Honda-Tsuburaya films made the monster/destruction scenes look quite flat even though Honda was directing.
>>
>>14635698
I don't necessarily disagree with you on that, either. Tsuburaya played a big part in many of the films I referring to, such as War of the Gargantuas, Mothra '61, etc.
>>
>>14635690
I just don't find the action scenes in old Kamen Rider shows all that entertaining.
>>
>>14635698
Tsuburaya started his career as a DP, didn't he? Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters mentions his generous use of smoke machines to add depth to all of his shots.
>>
>>14635611

Rodan has some really great effects for what they had at hand and for the time. It's a seriously underrated movie.
>>
>>14635467
The designs in Ultraman Powered are better than the show. The American production team had to be coerced to not use cardboard buildings for sets but they were also very conscious of the frailty of the detailed suits, so the fights are extremely lackluster and particularly cheap-looking (like, on par with Power Rangers -- but without any Sentai footage... just the American footage). Ultraman: Towards the Future is the superior Western Ultraman show by design, plot, and special effects. It's everything Ultraman Powered's show should've been.
>>
>>14635725
I actually don't think that one bluray that removed the strings made a bad decision because aside from that one rushed element popping up sometimes the Rodan scenes are enjoyable genuinely and not as "haha things sure were silly in the 50s :)" ironic camp. You can tell they were even trying their best to erase them but just didn't have the time, sometimes they're only BARELY visible.
>>
>>14635739
>>14635725
I wouldn't even say they're "good for their time" since none of the buildings felt as cheap as, say, the building that '84 Godzilla falls into.
>>
>>14635739

You sure are an insecure pissbaby to constantly lose your shit over the premise of ironic enjoyment but shit on everything that isn't about a giant turtle being taken deathly serious.
>>
>>14635611
I love it and the special effects surpass 1954 Godzilla by miles despite only being 2 years later. My favorite shot is when Rodan hatches and Kenji Sahara watches on in horror as Rodan's wing flaps create gusts all around as the camera zooms in on Sahara's face looking toward the hatching Rodan just off-screen. I think that might be my favorite cinematographic shot in a kaiju film aside from seeing Godzilla's silhouette amongst a burning Tokyo in Godzilla 1954 and the silhouette of Gyaos perched on the remains of Tokyo Tower in Gamera: GOTU.

Both of those were also significant highlights to me concidentally enough. I felt that the Gyaos scene showed Higuchi's anime staff history pretty interestingly.
>>
>>14635752
>I love it and the special effects surpass 1954 Godzilla by miles despite only being 2 years later.
I mean, Godzilla was the first suitimation movie. They were making it up as they went along. By the time Rodan was made they had some experience and kind of knew what they were doing.

>>
>>14635768
'54 had some awkward silly stuff here and there in a way that Rodan managed to avoid (strings aside) but a lot of it looked great mainly thanks to the way it was shot. I think Tsuburaya understood the basics of what makes this stuff work from the get-go.

They're not bad, but as other people have pointed out, the characters don't really react properly to the grave situation. Besides, almost all of the human scenes are in the first 30 minutes. The rest of the movie is more about the monsters, enough to where i'd say the character drama is about them and not the humans.

Man, I hate it that people do that. All or nothing.

Old Gamera is bad even for its time though.

I just personally don't understand why age would matter THAT much as far as tokusatsu goes given that the 3DCG tends to not be very good and the practical or hand-drawn effects tend to be the best-looking parts. The more elaborate animatronics and other technological improvements featured in say GMK do add to it, but the core of it is about cinematography and design sense moreso than technology.

Shinji Higuchi kept going on about the 3DCG in Gamera and whether it was a problem or not if it looked "cooler" than the suit scenes, but aside from the gyaos scenes and some shots of Iris the 3DCG just looked like an okay video game cutscene from that time. It's true that the CG Gyaos look more natural but aside from that the traditional stuff beats it.

From my experience, the action scenes lack the appeal found in the scale, destruction and fun use of practical effects found in more kaiju-centered stuff of that era like Godzilla & Ultraman while also not having the fantastic stunts and choreography of a great martial arts movie. I'd much rather read Ishinomori's Kamen Rider manga given the art is cool.

I recall trying out the first episode of Black and the Rider was swinging around "kicking" his enemies but blatantly not even touching them, so they just drew a little flash over the footage to try and fake an impact. I won't mind the occasional visible string in the old Toho films but stuff that overtly silly and cheap only works for unintentional comedy.

I've not watched enough and not been analytical enough in what I have watched to seriously compare the amount of good shots, but they were pretty up there and really good at framing stuff to give it a sense of scale. Their scenes obviously looked like guys in suits stomping around miniatures but they didn't really FEEL like it.
