Personally speaking as a Westerner, I'd put the cockpit directly in the center of the stomach. It's well-protected from all angles of attack. From the standpoint of human-style anatomy, it's also the best spot to put a ton of frontal armor without throwing off balance.

As much as I despise Hollywood for revising AYNIK's design and setting, the movie's powered frame designs are pretty fucking solid. Just needs more upper body armor and an actual fucking full-faced helmet and we're good. I especially enjoy the fact that the user's hands don't directly support the weapon, something a lot of powered frame designs fail to do.

It's strange how Western designs tend to get human-sized armor fucking great but can't really apply it to mechs and anything larger.

I'm amazed at how compelling the character and world stories are for Overwatch. I know they came from a canceled MMO, but they're all so good. I wonder if Blizzard decided nobody would give a crap about a pay MMO (and it would compete with WoW) unless they introduce the world through a more focused game first.

Heck, Starcraft 2's Terran mechanical aesthetic is primarily based on some mecha anime though I forgot which one.
Goliaths were referred to as FASA Goliaths in the manual of the original because of that FASA behind Battletech and Mechwarrrior.
There's also Goblin Shredders in WC3 and the like.
