Getter has always been something I watch just to see robots kill dinosaurs, demons and aliens. The story is never interesting no matter how competently it's told (Armageddon being the exception; could have been interesting but marred by poor execution). You're missing the point. Armageddon's story might be messy, but it's a story that capture everyone's attention. A story is more than just its logical air-tightness. The moon wars, invaders, nukes, aliens and the tone of the story were all very memorable and exciting. Armageddon was a wild ride and yes, that's partially because of its story.

The problem with Armageddon was the execs getting tired of Imagawa's shit and firing him due to take years to make a new chapter. If Imagawa stayed on it until the very end I'm sure it would've been by far the most perfect version of Go Nagai's works ever.

Armageddon takes some basics concepts of the franchise like Ryoma, Hayato and Musashi being veteran Getter pilots, but it's generally a standalone story. Many characters who appear there have completely different backstories and roles than in other stories.

Giant Robo, as much as I liked it, looks like a fucking emo and is piloted by surrogate Shinji. Of course it didn't sell, the main characters were pussies (the Experts and the Magnificent Ten are great, though), whereas Getter Robo is one of the best super robots there are, piloted by 3 charismatic psychopaths, specially Ryouma. Unlike Giant Robo, which is more drama-oriented, Armageddon is totally action-oriented. There's no way that would tank.

I don't get this meme. Almost every episode of Shin Mazinger has some sort of action scene in it, and every episode of G Gundam most definitely has an action scene in it. Both have multiple action scenes in several episodes.
