As promised in the last thread, here's your weekly update.

Progress since the last thread:
Rafflesia, F98, Dragonars added
All sprites resized, "tiny mech" bug fixed

We're currently hamstrung; we can't move forward with development until we have artists that can make tilesets and other assets. The pilot sprites you saw in the playtest were really the limit of what we can do artistically.


Until then, we're doing what we can, balancing the game, making attack animations, level designs, and whatnot

We've also made a survey for the game's art direction. The style of the game is up to you; whether we use Gen III or IV styled sprites.

The game will have a nuzlocke mode. That is the way the game was originally designed. We personally think it enhances the drama of the game. The nuzlocke mode will 100% be implemented with a slight change to the rules. You can view the changes in our design document. Of course, feel free to play the game any way you'd like.

Nuzlocke a huge part of the game, from the input we're getting, there'll definitely be some kind of easy mode added on, but the default setting will be Nuzlocke.

Minus the 1 "Pokemon" per route, because fuck that

Game asks you if you want your Mechs and attached pilots to die when they're killed, if not, you play in non-nuzlocke mode.

Choose "Easy" mode, you can buy Revives at any store for cheap, but "Garages" (Poke centers) are disabled, maybe pilot death is disabled, too.

We're taking the comments about the hokey dialog to heart; we kinda wrote whatever in the two weeks it took to make the playtest.

A lot of thought is going into the story's tone; the last thing we want to make is an edgy game.

Yep, we're using those for all of our animations.

Great website, though the art of the newer games can't really be used; we'd still have to make sprites for things like Nono or a Scopedog.

Instead of doing that way, why not just have easy mode be like regular pokemon, with revives and pokecenters and normal mode just not have the revives. It shouldn't be too hard to just remove revives from the inventory of shops in normal mode.

There will be the option to pick non-nuzlocke or "easy mode" where the game will be like a regular Pokemon game. If you don't select easy mode, the game will play on its normal setting, which has mech/pilot permadeath. The game will follow nuzlocke rules but not all of them.

For example, your mech will die if its health reaches zero, possibly killing your pilot. But you do not need to capture the first mechamon you encounter.

The design doc has the explanation of our nuzlocke rules

I think non-standard revivals could be a thing but there are many ways to go about it.

When it comes to cloning the only thing that comes to my mind right now is somehow "recording" or "uploading" a pilots information at a certain point. After the original dies and the clone has the information from when they were last scanned.

Like if you scanned them a long time ago but then they suddenly die so when you go to clone them they don't retain any new information they learned during that time but have what they did when they were scanned.

Whether "information" means their Level or what moves they know or both is entirely up to you.

I don't think we would want the pilots to come back after they die via cloning. Part of being a commanding officer is living with the deaths of your soldiers. If you are playing the nuzlocke mode of the game, then as captain of your squad you have to do your best to keep your men alive. This creates tension in the game when you feel like shit for losing your favorite characters.

In the easy mode, the mechs and pilots won't be destroyed, so cloning won't be necessary. We can look into the idea of cloning for other purposes though

If so, the revive will only count for the mech, not the pilot, so there is no bringing them back

Sentai/Power Ranger mechs would be fun to have. There's already several sprites of mechs from several shows you could use, and you could have the red and sixth rangers from the shows be pilots.

Sure, something like that could totally happen.

I'm not sure about having Sentai characters, we only have room for 40 or so Pilots, we'd like to try and have as many recognizable, distinct characters as possible. The two of us also don't have much knowledge of Sentai, so we'd run into problems there unless a Sentai artist got on board.


You might see something close to a Rider though, stay tuned.

I don't think I said anything in the design doc about this, but there Mega Evolution won't really be in the game.

With very few exceptions, mostly Nono->Buster Machine 7, and maybe the main legendary.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a "main legendary"?

We were thinking Ideon, or Turn A, but it could really be anything, as long as it's powerful.
