I loved it. Great characters, sick as fuck robuts, and a simple, cool story. I loved the escalating scale of the conflict in the last episodes.

It would have been nice if GL had some more traditional super robot weapons like a rocket punch, beam, or sword though. Maybe a drill on the end of a spear?

It's OK, I didn't like the mecha designs at all though.

Saber Marionette, Lost Universe and Ryu Knight were equally acceptable titles to praise.

But then anime went full mainstream, and normies gravitated to seasonal fare like SEED, Destiny, 00, Code Geass, and Gurren Lagann, ignoring the sea of other quality titles in favor of sperging out over them the same way CS does over GGG.

Instead of remembering them with mixed feelings (like we used to), /m/ started using them as a litmus test for shit taste because of how cancerous turds thought they were the best shit ever and the ultimate in quality /m/ anime.

Basically, while Wingfags just shitpost it for the nostalgia, memes and irony, GL fags unironically seem to think GL was good, which makes people remember and focus on its faults.

This makes the series appear a lot worse than it really was if you were watching it at the time, which most toppafags and anti-spirals probably didn't.

The weird dark picture of Gurren Lagann is humanity in the show is very much the villain. Nothing the "villains" do come close to the the horrible actions done by the "heroes"

most fun i had watching an anime for a long while now

Mostly because i was watching it along people from here and other forums

and yes i think i was part of that cancer fanbase, but again i think i overhyped because it was fun to see it with other people and those guys had other tastes

It was okay, but then went to shit after Kamina died. Asspulls started coming out left and right, just generic emotionless action every episode. Plot was barebones "okay" through the entire show more or less.

The characters were completely garbage though.
Simon had some nice development, but his cowardice was his entire character. After he lost it, he lost his entire character.

Kittan was actually pretty cool
Yoko had no personality
Some side characters here and there that nobody remembers.

All in all its literally babby's first mecha. Its a first step to watching mecha with thoughtful action and actual characters that develop throughout the show.

I saw the 2 movies. The first was fairly good in my opinions. I appreciate that they cut a lot of episodes on the montage.

Chris wanted to be like this character, and wanted everyone to love him. Why? Because if everyone loved Mamoru, maybe they would love him too. But most people did not like Mamoru. This upset Chris, because clearly they were saying they didn't like him either. So he argued. He argued with anyone who would listen. He argued with people who wouldn't listen. He argued to the point where he felt sad and depressed. He started to hate the characters that weren't Mamoru. They were the enemy. They were the problem. Why couldn't everyone see?

Chris could not separate himself from the character. Chris was so obsessed with a fictional character that he could not admit to himself that the character had flaws, because he felt like it would be admitting he had flaws too. Chris could not understand that truly liking a character is to like them as they are, and not how you want them to be. To like their flaws. Flaws give character. Flaws are interesting.

Having AI doesn't make something transhumanist, because that's not what transhumanism is. Transhumanist works are stories about people who go beyond being human. That could include Gai from GGG, but it would only be him, not the various robots, since they were never human in the first place. Gai doesn't count though because him being a cyborg isn't a focus of the story. There's nothing about how it affects him or society in GGG, there's no indication of what's positive about the changes and what's negative. We know the technology exists since he has it, and later Renais, but there's no indication it's a part of society or has any effect on it within the show. There's little of anything. The only thing you ever bring up is his dad saying Gai died during the accident and has just being going on automatic since, which is a throw away line and not focus. He's a cyborg because it's cool rather than because it's a big part of the story. The major story beat it serves is him being afraid to love whatshername as a cyborg because he no feels human, not the fact he no longer feels human and what that means to him or how he acts. It's part of a romance arc, not an arc itself - there only to serve as a reason he can't be with her, and not to explore what those things mean.

That's the point, though, a culture about about killing those and lionizing killing is wrong, it's what makes toxic masculinity so evil. Mecha anime would be so much more interesting if there less jingoistic war stories or shows about senseless masculinity culture and violence culture, and more about genuine exporation, discovery, and alien contact conflicts, like GGG was.

The interesting bit about GGG is there did not seem to be war among humans on Earth. Sure there were those tensions between China and Japan during the Primeval arc when we first met FuuRyu and RaiRyu, But even that wasn't an unbridgable gap and they learned to get along after a while.

I think Mecha anime has the potential to be more than Call of Duty or Halo or Star Wars or Duke Nukem. It has the potential to be like Star Trek, No Man's Sky, Stellaris, Mass Effect, and other such things.

Sure there are fights in GGG, but it's largely to understand what the Trinary Solar System was and what happened all those years ago. More stuff like that would be good! And of course, representing diversity, especially for the kinds of people the status quo looks down on certainly helps.
