If Ramba Ral was a real man, he'd be fighting in a power loader. Instead, he was piloting a brand new, top-of-the-line Gouf fresh off the factory floor before it had gone into full production, which he had previously bragged was superior to the Zaku II. He was being a salty, hypocritical bitch in that scene.

The story may have been rushed after episode right, but it was worth it for Norris' scenes. That battle in the abandoned city is probably the best battle scene in any Gundam series.

Actually, he took off the machine's head and made critical hits on the right forearm and the cockpit that will take at least a couple of days of service to fix fully.

The head may or may not be an easy fix depending on how modular it is (Karen's RX-79 received a GM head fairly easily) and the arm is likely an easy fix if they have spare parts on hand, but the cockpit damage is severe enough that the chest needs rebuilding. There was a large wide gash on the outside, but the lower front and some of the right side of the cockpit sphere was basically gone.

He did most definitely die in vain, though.

In the long run, perhaps. But as far as that particular fight was concerned, there's a bit of saltiness from Ramba there.
Fact was, their first few fights, Ramba was mopping the floor with him, even despite the suit's edge.
So what did Amuro do? He studied his opponent.
He learned.
He improved.

It's the same thing with Char - the suit helped keep Amuro alive, but in time, his skill was what turned things from 'getting back alive' to 'sending them packing.'

You're leaving out the most damning part of his assignment - the pretty heavy implication that the reason he got dropped in there was because Killing wanted the mission to go tits-up, so he could be justified in 'punishing' Side 6.

The turnaround on his Plan B is pretty telling. He's not even waiting for higher-up approval before he's loading up those nukes, he's smiling as he points out Side 6 didn't sign the treaty, and he casually murders his commander for balking at it.

If Cyclops Team succeeded, that was a bonus, but the fact was, more than anything, Killing was interested in making Side 6 hurt. This just gave him a pretense.

The whole point was his suicide attack was rendered entirely meaningless by the war ending. The main objective of the mission was to disable or destroy Alex Gundam.

All from a no-kill rookie who crashed his Zaku and had only a Heat Hawk, that's pretty fucking impressive, meaningless or not.

The whole point is he's terrified. He's just seen Zeon's elite specfor get massacred, his commander die in front of him and their latest war-winning weapon lose to a few clumsy shots, and he's convinced (Because he never has reason to doubt otherwise,),
they're going to nuke the colony and it'll be on his hands if he runs away.

He had a wide open oppurtunity to desert, run away from it and save himself, a kid scared to death and told he has to do the impossible or watch a few million people die.

The kick to the balls is the part that Zeon lost, the nukes got intercepted and he died for absolutely nothing.

But there's no denying Bernie did amazingly with just a barely-scratching melee weapon, no ranged weapons, a mass production MS And a few christmas decorations, against space-ore magic Robot with its bolt-on plotham armour.

In any other story he'd be a hero, rather than a tragedy.

The arm's in question, they didn't appear to have spares on hand for two reasons: A) It's a prototype where the parts were manufactured in Jaburo; you can see them panickedley loading anything they have onto the shuttle at the Artic base at the start, and

B) They didn't have any weapons for it, they only had a few hundred rounds left for the arm guns after Mikhail's Kampfer fought it, as one of the dispatch mentions when Chris sorties.

Strategically it would have delayed deployment of the thing for a while, which in strategic thinking is what you want; you bomb factories not because it'll stop them making tanks, but it'll lower the amount they can get to the front per month.
At that late in the war, any detriment to the EFSF would be a bittersweet advantage for Zeon.
