You actually never see the tadpole, if there even is one. Too many people simply have wrongly categorized Shin's first form, as seen in that first figure, in as a tadpole.

According to film comments and japanese Wikipedia, ShinGoji's got 4 different stages, the first mentioned as a tadpole-like form although only the tail is seen. (Maybe somebody on the film identifies it as tadpole-looking, I don't know)

I wouldn't discard it as being a reused 2nd form render, that might explain the lack of merchandise/maquettes.
>>
>>14619158
Well literally all you see is his tail, don't think they're gonna make a figure of that.

I'd translate more of them if I could, but some of them are kinda indecipherable to me and my Japanese isn't fluent, so some of the dialogue becomes hard for me to translate. I'm mostly just doing them for fun, anyhow.

if the implicating is that A, shin goji can reproduce asexually, and B, the thing that would become shin goji was just a fragment of a much larger being, then I'd say it's safe to assume we have yet to actually meet the true shin gojira, only a descendant of it

>>
>>14625251
Or that may simply be how the species do.
We're talking terrible beasts from beneath the sea that spread lazer-spewing monsters to the land. What constitutes as normal for it is already beyond what we understand. The best we can do is to guess at what it might be like by observing how Kaiju a-to-c matured and applying a logical endpoint to that. Maybe it actually has arms that aren't useless?

From what I've heard the red stuff isn't blood, it's actually some kind of coolant because Shin Goji is apparently a biological nuclear reactor. The 'gills' were for pushing water through his coolant chambers so he doesn't melt down, but on land they rupture from lack of water.

At least that's what I heard.

I don't know if his chest swelling up was from inhaling for his atomic breath, but I think a cool idea would be for Godzilla to channel his atomic power into a part of his body to acheive different effects.
Like charging his arm gives him a shining finger attack. Or charging his tail makes it extend and then he injects power into them like a pile bunker. Or as an off shoot of Shin's beamspam, he can let out a localized burst of energy from his fins to repel monsters off his back.

So basically concentrated versions of Nuclear Pulse.

Unadjusted for inflation, Shin Godzilla is currently the most successful Godzilla film to date in the Japanese market. >And just because you can enjoy things doesn't mean that they're good.

If you want to get technical there are no good Godzilla films. At least not from Japan. As a general rule of thumb they're all badly written, cheaply made, low quality B movies trumped up as important by their more delusional fans. The Japanese simply lack the same level of craftsmanship in film making that Hollywood possesses. Hell even China does better to some degree. Hollywood's worst is often better than Japan's best in terms of objective factors of quality.

Take the two American films. Compared to their Japanese counterparts you can see the level of effort that's gone into these films. The writers actually tried to write a compelling narrative, free of cheap melodrama that plagues Japanese films as a whole. They had the goal of making the monsters look like real, living things. Not cheap rubber suits used in some asinine adherence to an outdated effects style. Even the scores are higher quality, using actual music instead of juvenile military marches.

The '98 movie received a lot of hate from Godzilla fans, and the 2014 film less so but still some. The irony is that they're the two best in the series when all factors are accounted for. Only nostalgia goggles and fanboy autism make people see otherwise. How many people who liked '98 and 2014 that aren't Godzilla fans otherwise would actually watch a Japanese Godzilla film? Few, if any. Even critics who praise Japanese Godzilla films do so for what they are: chintzy but somewhat fun B movies.
>>
>>14629560
Plenty of people hated the 98 film outside Godzilla fans. It's impossible to take seriously when half your cast is Simpsons voice actors and your movies is more focused on ripping off Jurassic Park then being a kaiju film.

I said fine, not great. Again, Johnson is a boring protagonist and the pacing could have been quicker, but it's a solid kaiju film. Keeping Godzilla mostly out of sight was a bad move, but you can see that Gareth Edwards actually gave a shit about the material.

Devlin and Emmerich didn't even want the Godzilla job, they wanted to make a "Giant Meteor crashes into Earth" movie that ended up getting canned thanks to the other two that came out that year.

>>14629647
So it's good simply because it didn't treat the material like a joke? Not because it uses Godzilla wisely, has interesting characters, has an appropriate or good score, or has a coherent or engaging narrative? It's fine because it isn't Godzilla '98. Do you not see the problem with that? Sure, a few scenes might be neat. But you have to slog through over an hour of filler to get to it.
>>
>>14629624
>By that logic I guess this means remakes and more recent films are generally better than what came before them because of the more advanced equipment and larger budgets modern filmmakers have at their disposal? The more expensive and newer the project, the higher its quality is, right?

All of those films you list which got remakes were perfectly fine films of high quality and entertainment value already before they were chosen for remakes, and the remakes were garbage especially in comparison.

What is the original Godzilla as a film? Yeah everyone knows about the monster, but the plot is mostly a shallow Japanese romantic melodrama. The movie spends most of it's run time focused on two disposable characters and their love story and one scientist who bitches about not killing the monster. A dramatic element which amounts to nothing on his part. The only worthwhile character, Serizawa, is barely in the film, and doesn't become plot relevant until it's last act. The cinematography even for it's era is amateur. The writing is abysmal, shallow, and boring. The titular monster is barely relevant to the plot, and all the so called "symbolism" that makes him some important stable of film is just gratuitous destruction dolled up as allegory by fans. Godzilla's relevance to nuclear weapons is equally relevant to the monster of the week from a Bert I. Gordon film.

Comparatively, while the '98 remake was bad and the 2014 film was at best mediocre in terms of Hollywood films they're both improvements by several orders of magnitude over the Japanese films.

>>
>>14629668
None of the characters in Godzilla 98 were interesting. The closest thing we got to that was Jean Reno as "French spy that's in the movie because Emmerich decided to shift the blame for Godzilla's creation away from American nukes"

98 Godzilla's treated as a cowardly animal that likes tuna, the score keeps veering off into knocking off the Brachiosaur scene in Jurassic Park, and again you got stupid subplots like the French guys they added to keep American nukes blameless and the "Spunky girl reporter tries to impress her boss Kent Brockman" crap.
>>

I really enjoyed the bits on Odo island and how Yamane adopted the kid whose family got killed. >>
>>14629673

I find your criticisms interesting because they apply to Godzilla '14 much better than they do Gojira (1954). Yamane, Emiko, and Ogata, and Seriwaza are a strong cast of characters. The two best characters are either killed (Father Brody) or used as an occasional exposition machine (Serizawa). Everyone else is sidelined by the second act for one of the dullest human characters in cinema (not limited to this franchise).

Godzilla is almost completely irrelevant in Edwards' film. You could remove him and almost nothing changes until the final act and arguably the nuke would have handled the MUTO. So yeah, irrelevant. In Gojira, the titular character actually drives the plot.

Shallow and boring are perfect descriptions for nearly everything concerning Godzilla '14 except for Bryan Cranston and its cinematography.

Your issues with Gojira sounds more like an older foreign film just doesn't suit your personal tastes. The atmosphere, score, cinematography, and acting in Gojira is great and widely recognized. One is a masterpiece and the other a pretty, yet empty and forgettable waste of time.
>>
How has your taste in the films changed throughout the years?

Started out with King of the Monsters when I was really young, it's always stayed a favorite til I saw the original version. I mostly watched the showa era flicks when I was younger because the only Heisei ones available were Returns and Biollante. When I was a few years older, I thought Heisei was kickass and way better, since I thought the showa era suits looked goofy and childish. When I first saw the millenium era flicks I was... disappointed, but not in a way that killed my enthusiasm for the franchise. When I started to really get back into it a few years ago, I realized how amazing early Showa is and I came around on later Showa too. Now the only Heisei flicks I really like are Returns and Biollante. I still don't care for the Millennium era movies.

That's actually pretty common; the 90's movies were just not good at all. Destroyah isn't bad though, it's just that it expects you to have watched all the previous movies.

Yeah. My favorites are Honda's early entries (G54, MvG, Ghidrah, MZ), Hedorah, Biollante, and GMK. The majority of Heisei and Millennium films do little for me.

As far as Heisei Goji movies go, I adore G vs. King Ghidorah, mostly because of how ABSURD it is. It's a great drinking movie.

>>14629930
>Wasn't Vs King Ghidorah produced during the Japanese economy boom?
It was produced around the time the bubble burst. That's why it focuses so much on the evils of unscrupulous and aggressive economic advancements, and why the destruction scenes revel in the monsters tearing down billboards and huge buildings. It was meant to show that even though Japan's economy looks strong on the outside and can even threaten foreign nations, it could easily fall apart.

You people never stop. Everything doesn't have to be overly serious or grim dark to be good. And I don't think I've seen anyone ever seriously argue that every Godzilla flick in the Showa Era is good. I'd readily offer Megalon and Revenge in response. But the best entries of the Showa Era are definitely better than anything from the Heisei and Millennium packs.
>>
>>14630257
Yeah, I sure enjoy the timeless classics like Godzilla vs Mothra, Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla and Final Wars.
>>
>>14629754

Showa and earlier Heisei, for all their flaws, at least had their own distinct personality.

Later heisei just felt like bland design-by-committee shit (I partly blame Okawara desu), and Millennium just sort of continued that trend until Final Wars, which love it or hate it, had its own personality and flavor.
>>
>>14630297
What the fuck went wrong with Millennium era anyway, that shit felt especially cheap and poorly acted.
>>
>>14630281

Final Wars was a cheesy clusterfuck on purpose, and on that end, it succeeded perfectly well.

Also if you start shitting on Gordon we're going to have to step outside.
>>
>>14630279
GMK is superior to every Showa after the original.
>>
>>14630305

It was design-by-committee bullshit. But again, honestly I feel like that started when Okawara took over the director's chair. Omori wasn't exactly Honda, but he knew how to make a movie at least interesting. Biollante had atmosphere galore and KG was a gloriously stupid showa throwback. His stuff almost felt like live-action anime. Okawara on the other hand was just

It saddens me never got was suggested by Godzilla vs. Biollante. While a little rough, it was ambitious and had its own identity. Plus the visual effects were a step up from anything the franchise had seen before. If Toho had continued in that direction, we might have really gotten something special. Instead they fell back on lazy semi-retreads or half-baked concepts. Shame.

Kaneko's Gamera Trilogy was astounding though. It visibly improved with each entry and outdid its competition in just about every category, with less money. Toho undermined his efforts with GMK.

Whatever creative, energetic spark Honda and friends had for most of the early Godzilla films just isn't there for a lot of the recent entries.
