Last time on SRW GC Translation Thread: >>14148363

- A quick summary of why she's called Milky Tits.
- Steve dropped out of the project.
- Yuuko Mizutani was collateral damage in a sub ninja attack.
- Dash inserted graphics.
- 2nd SRW OG got a line-by-line text translation.
- Dolphin 5.0 released.
- Dash inserted more graphics.
- Daltanious is fully subbed.
- Dash gets even more graphics inserted.
- Zaku balance is not good.
- Dash MVP this year, all years.
- Bring gave the SRW bug to his nephew (with translated SRW 2 of all things).
- SRW GC ignores the rule of cool and Guntank's cannons are stronger than Zeta's waverider crash.
- G-Gen Overworld breakthrough. Reference tables discovered.
- Paging Oppai Missile. Oppai Missile, please pick up the courtesy phone and call the front desk.
The old texture replacement method is still usable, up to stage 20, essentially act 1. (can be used along with the new one, just don't get the stages or battle lines)
http://pastebin.com/CYDquvFD (embed) (embed)

The new method. We have VWF, so it looks better! Except for the character naming screen. That's not right. Not sure if this needs to be updated now.

Yet another awesome breakthrough for Overworld. Danikk (god bless this man) managed to make lines go on for as long as we need them as well as add in as many pages as we need! We are in full translation mode now!

Going to have to go back and re-write quite a bit, but we already have a basic translation of most stages done.

Have I ever mentioned how much I love you guys?
Not only are you translating a game in your free time, but you post frequent updates all over the place. It's refreshing to see something other than an announcement, and then nothing ever again.

That goes for the GC team and especially Black, who I mentally equate with a squirrel on coffee because he's also everywhere.
>>

I was grinning like a madman watching this.

>Waw Bring - I wish I had the same ASM grocery store nearby! You gotta tell them to spread their franchise overseas!
I wish there was a grocery store that sold ASM fruit. You eat it, and suddenly you have the motivation and the knowledge to do ASM hacking.

Also, a note that probably won't apply to anyone else, if you're using LLE, make sure you have the correct bios for Japan. I set up LLE to mess around with GC - GBA connection. Then, the emulator kept giving me errors when I tried running SRW GC. I fixed it by switching back to HLE. Moral of the story, don't mess around with BIOS, stick to HLE, unless you need to connect to a GBA, then you don't have any choice.

Which reminds me - I don't really contribute to the GC project. I only gave a hand to suggest to switch from texture-based to a patch, that's all. So I'm everywhere on AP, DESU.
>>
>>14604227
>I love this. Really, really! Does Danikk need any help with VWF?

I honestly have no idea. As far as I can tell most of it is VWF, but for some things (like the dialog) and the numbers, it's not.
>>
So, I've been following along with the decompression seeing if I can't make sense of things. I get to a line where IDA and Dolphin seemed to branch to two different locations.

Turns out IDA just gave a bad default location name. def_8012A978 for address 8012A9D0. In hind sight I see why they did it, I still don't appreciate it.

I think OGMD is something like 48 missions long. Two or three route splits, maybe? I bought the JP and Asian releases, but I'm kind of a collector when it comes to SRW, anyway.

The English translation in the Asian release is super awkward, and it feels like they had three or four translators working on it at the same time who never communicated with each other. I'd say the dialogue is 90% understandable, 5% confusing, and 5% what the fuck am I even reading.

Almost all of the character and unit names are either official Banpresto names or what Atlus used in the past, in a few cases (like Latooni). The dialogue itself is wonky, with odd or no punctuation. Kind of reminds me of Breath of Fire 3, and its aversion to using periods.

It's readable for the most part, but it's definitely not a very good localization. Personally, I don't regret picking it up, though.
>>
I wish that SRW GC didn't have this much sanity checking in it. I'm trying to make sense of the decompression function, and I keep running into all these subroutines that start to look like they're doing something, and then it turns out to just be sanity-checking. Then I run into something that also looks like sanity checking, and it turns out it does a fair bit of memory updates. Bleh.

I am full of Animus!

Oh, but in unrelated news, I finished a linked game of Oracle of Ages (that I hadn't touched for three years). I also got all 60 possible rings in a two-game playthrough. Now I just need to play the games in the other direction (Oracle of Ages with Hero's Secret, to linked Oracle of Season) to get the last four rings and the rest of the story. Maybe I'll do that by the end of the decade.

>Super Robot Whores
When you think about it, GC (and NEO) have really "innocent" character designs when you compare it to any other SRW that appeared on the PS2 by that time. Compare Femkimi in GC against Akimi in OGMD.

Did Banpresto think "Gamecube is for kids, let's not get them confused" or was it more like Nintendo giving the no-no look?
>>
>>14614026
Possibly the latter. One can only imagine the reaction of young GC fans playing OGMD after they got older, it's like the equivalent of doing busty fan art of kid show ladies that aren't that stacked.

Then again, it's not like Nintendo is entirely adverse to eye-pleasing stuff either (see the princesses and Rosalina wearing biker suits in Mario Kart).

Even though this is taking years, I'm glad I still keep seeing updates and know it's still going on.

This game is one of the reasons I got a USB loader program set up for playing Game Cube isos on the Wii. Still got a spot on the drive ready for when it finally will be done.Granted, I have no idea if it'll work with Nintendont or not. Though I guess it doesn't matter since post people will just be emulating it with Dolphin.

Anyway, I just wanted to hop in say thank you all for what you're doing and for sticking with it so long. You're doing God Gundam's work.

Guys how is Moon Dwellers? gonna buy it. will I get the story for the most part? I hear the translation is decent.
>>
>>14678151
I wouldn't call the translation "decent," but you'll understand it, for the most part.

A lot of the problems you'll run into are grammar fails, misspelled words, inconsistent naming, and some translations so literal, they still use the Japanese sentence structure. Some terms are left untranslated, like Gyokuza Ki (Throne Unit / Machine, referring to Granteed), Nen / Nendo, and some others.

I spotted a few instances of the wrong names being used, like how Touya calls Tenia's name in battle, but the text reads "Katia." Also, Brigandy's Blasted Mode has three different names in the translated text, depending on which sub pilot you use (but the voiced lines always say Blasted).

Every once in a while, you run into crabstick lines that are WAY off, and all but impossible to understand. Thankfully, those are kind of rare.

As for the game itself, it's pretty fun. Not quite on-par with 2nd OG, but still great. One of my biggest complaints is that Granteed is kind of garbage until you get Dracodeus.
>>
>>14678151
>>14678353
What Steve said. The translation is pretty much a butcher's job at trying to paint, but you'll understand the meaning almost always. (The tutorial mission explains final attacks in such away the sentences don't make sense...) The encyclopaedia is the part that got the smaller end of the stick. Calvina's dialogue is particularly better than the rest, making you think they got one "translator" (was tempted to say "transgressor") per character or something.

The gameplay is good as ever. I don'tthink much has changes since OG2, actually.
People say the game is very easy, but I find it "just" medium-easy.
Animations are a real pleasure to the eye.
Voice acting and BGM's are their usual great selves.
Story-wise, I haven't played enough into it to comment properly yet, but it is fairly obvious to me that having played the 2 previous Japanese-only games is a great plus. In part because the encyclopaedia which is supposed to help you get background on the many groups that got involved, is plain crap. But also because you'll be spoiling yourself significantly (from my perspective) when you read those.
As the publisher said essentially the story was independent and this was a good entry for newcomers to join the OG fray, I thought the story would just mention "incidents" from the previous game entries. But there are actually characters being reused, to the point you're told who was absorbed into what villain entity and such.

Overall, an OK experience. I'm wondering if playing OG2 with the great translation guide available isn't as good an experience.

I've forgotten to answer your second question (Axel syndrom).
There's OG Moon Dwellers for good animations. It's transgrated (translated into Engrish) on PS4 only, if I'm not mistaken. Animations rock there.

J's animations are OK. Alpha Gaiden's are still OK by me, but depends on your own personal perceptions.
OG1 and OG2 rock, of course!
GC is translated up to stage 20 and has OK animations too, with a slightly different damage system, which I personally like.

A translator approached me and said he'd like to translate this game.

I know nothing about extracting text from games, or how to modify the game so that you could insert English text instead of Japanese, but I was hoping someone might have some leads that could point my friend into the right direction.

Good one, good one. Oh wait - that was probably a honest question.
The Saturn isn't the platform of choice for you to get started with these tasks, to be honest. It's one of the most complex ones ever created. RHDN offers a few posts where people who have handled some Saturn translations can help - hopefully. There are very few such people.
A Visual Novel, on the other hand, is a good choice for starter projects, and that's one I'd love to read too.

Hello, I'm alive. Sorry to be gone for so long without notice, but things happened and I didn't even browse 4chan for several weeks. I've been back for a little while now, but was delaying posting here because I wanted to get some work done first. Fortunately, the mod makes that possible.

You sound like a G Generation customer! Which one is your favorite?
>>
>>14819958
Wars, which is why I did this. http://ggenwars.shoutwiki.com/

However, I just wish they weren't such grind-fests. In my ideal G-Gen game would be one of two things:

Either something like Wars, but with as many units and pilots as can be crammed in, an evolution tree where every unit in the game can be unlocked through capture and evolution (with the possible exception of secrets that need to be unlocked by beating the game (like 0 Gundam type ACD) and exchanged while having a part equipped (like 00 Gundam to 00 Raiser)), and a way to make it far less of a grind-fest.

Alternatively, a game with a campaign mode that sticks close to canon. However, if you fulfill certain criteria, you unlock alternate timelines (just like in Gundam vs. Zeta Gundam).

Also, back in the day, there was a guy on the Stencyl forums (back when it was still in pre-beta), that was working on making a G Gen game. He made a bunch of awesome sprites for the game. I wanted to volunteer my programming skills and help with that project, but for various reasons I wasn't able to.

And I managed to sucked back into X-O again. Fortunately, with the mod, I can let the battles go on full auto using a team of UCs. I just got done with the 50 stage campaign thing. Also, I noticed that no one has been keeping Akurasu updated with X-O info because it's shit.

I'm thinking of getting Moon Dwellers but never played any of the OG games. Are the two OG anime series worth watching at all? Or would it be a waste of time and I should just go balls deep on MD raw?
>>
>>14829812
You'll get different opinions on this one. But first...
- Moon Dwellers is Engrish heavy. Beware.
- Although it's been advertised as independent from previous OG entries, Moon Dwellers builds events that happen after OG1, 2, 2nd. Which means you'll get references to those. Not really spoilers if you don't read the glossary too much, but it's a bit of a pain to hear about many factions and events without much substance.
That's why I'd really recommend you play OG1, OG2, and 2nd OG before you play Moon Dwellers.
(2nd OG has a web playthrough with translation that works pretty well.)

As for watching the animes, everyone agrees that the Insepector series is one step above the early one. Then you'll hear people say the first series isn't worth watching, or same thing for the second one.
As far as I'm concerned, I enjoyed both, probably because I watched them after playing OG1 and OG2 on the GBA (which was a blast, even just on a GBA screen).
On a side-note, I'm generally not a big watcher of battle animations and my perception focuses on a good story and a good gameplay.
>>
>>14830825
Alright, moon dwellers look cool so I kinda wanna just jump in on that and was lookin to see if just watching the animu would provide decent background knowledge for it.
>>
>>14829812
You can read this LP to get the story from OG1 and OG2 if you don't want to play.
forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3656748

Then, Mneidengard's summary of OGG on gamefaqs.

Then read the translation of 2nd OG.
http://2ndsrwoge.com

Then, you can play Moon Dwellers.
Or you can just play Moon Dwellers from the start and occasionally get confused as to what's going on.
>>
>>14831596
Yep, I'd probably say play Moon Dwellers and don't mind the small confusion here and there.
If you watch the animes, you'll spoil yourself a bit more than necessary to play MD.

I replied on RHDN. The pak file header is somewhat clear. However, I can't make sense of the rest of the file.
>>
>>14868235
OK. I can confidently say this much. There are two types of pak files (with header 00 00 XX XX and XX 00 00 00). The first variety appear to not be compressed. so I don't care about these.

The second variety have two possibilities for XX, 01 and 08. I'm not sure what that means yet. The next four bytes contain the size of the rest of the header (call this value Y). The next Y bytes are the name of the file. Many of these file names are actually not xxx.pak, but xxx.pak_. The underscore at the end is the key thing. However, this underscore does not appear in the TOC.

The data after this initial header is incomprehensible to me at the moment.
>>
>>14870729
>The next Y bytes are the name of the file. Many of these file names are actually not xxx.pak, but xxx.pak_. The underscore at the end is the key thing. However, this underscore does not appear in the TOC.
Hry Bring, while I'm definitely not in depth like you, could it be that the TOC tells you the compressed file names, while the "pak_" names are just the names of the uncompressed files? It's common practice to add an underscore to show that (I mean, unless you use tar).
Again, I'm not on the thing so, just an opinion.

There's already a thread for the project on RHDN. As for the patch, it's on-going work (right? right?) so usually it waits for until the project is done to be posted. It's probably too big for RHDN, too.

Good news. I made some more progress understanding the header file. This was so freaking obvious, but I was so focused on the second word being size, that I didn't consider that the first word could be size.

The approach from the PPC side is pretty much stalled. The decompression is way to crazy for me.

The compressed file is 0x4DE40 bytes, so it makes sense that the compressed data is 0x4DE31 long. Best of all, >>14868235 this file is 637,644 bytes long. In other words, 0x9BACC

Haha!
>>
>>14910576
I just realized that the brown box is not 0 padding. Compressed data starts at 0x19

For clarity's sake, I still don't know what 0x1 means in this context. It may be a magic number, it may mean that there's only 1 file compressed here. 0x9 is the size of the original filename. font.bin_ is the original filename (nine bytes long). 0x4DE31 is the size of the compressed data (from 0x19 to the end of the file), 0x9BACC is the size of font.bin_.

When I deleted the header (first 0x19 bytes), the file was 0x4DE31 bytes long.
>>
>>14910621
And unfortunately, INFLATE doesn't do the trick. I just wrote a quick and dirty program in Java to apply INFLATE on the compressed data and it throw:

Exception in thread "main" java.util.zip.DataFormatException: unknown compression method
at java.util.zip.Inflater.inflateBytes(Native Method)
at java.util.zip.Inflater.inflate(Unknown Source)
at java.util.zip.Inflater.inflate(Unknown Source)
at inflation.Inflate_Test.main(Inflate_Test.java:19)

So, unknown compression method, which brings us right back to the original point that I need to get into the PPC guts and figure out how the decompression works.

The one thing that remains promising is that the first three bytes of the compressed data are 00 00 00, and the first three bytes of the decompressed data is also 00 00 00. That's my next lead, and my only hope for not having to dig through PPC guts.
>>
To decompress the stuff as a first step you can just translate the PPC code 1:1 into Java or whatever is comfortable for you. Just treat every register as a variable and transcribe the instructions. Maybe that's even enough and you won't have to figure out how to compress it in that format again, many games support both compressed and uncompressed data.

What is it you are trying to decompress btw, jumped in at the end of the conversation.

The question is what I need to compress. We need to replace the Japanese font with the font that Dash made. The game has the font compressed. We're able to jury-rig it to memory edit the font in, but it's not a practical long-term solution. We know what the decompressed Japanese font looks like (see Dash's screenshot >>14868235, so just interpreting the decompression won't help. I need to reverse engineer it and be able to compress something.

Alternatively, I know where the master pointer table is in the code. We could add the uncompressed files to the disc, I could figure out how the game loads files from disc to RAM, move them to take up the space originally used by the decompressed font files, and go from there. However, that will require me to learn how to load stuff from disc to RAM, and make sure we have sufficient space. It may be what I'll have to do if we can't get the compression approach to work, so there's that.

Have you tried quickBMS's comrpession scan?

hi there

the game works with dolphin 5.0 ?

It want to load texture...
>>
>>14912484
I hadn't, but I just did. No luck, I tried both with the original file, and with the header taken off. I'm running it one more time having pruned the header and the three leading 0s to get back to word alignment. Maybe I was correct in my initial guess that those were padding bytes.

>>14913141
Yes, it works with Dolphin 5.0
>>
>>14913230
thanks for response !
I've put the same settings like 3.0 but It won't load, why is missing ?

another thing : i'm currently try to do VWF files

I've manage to split files but I can't merge
here's my line :

java -jar bin_splitter.jar -m add00dat.bin_new files.list

what's my error ?
>>
>>14913247
I'm not sure why the textures aren't loading. As for merging files, you'll need to ask Dash for help.
>>
>>14913259

Ok I'll wait his return

thanks for help anyway, I'll try to investigate why he won't load texture

you have translate until stage 20, right ?

are they difference between old and new method ?
>>
>>14913270
The old method is dropping all the textures in the \Dolphin Emulator\Load\Textures\ folder. The new method requires manually editing the ISO.

I guess he was asking if the translation contents is the same.
>>
>>14913270
>>14915037
Ah. I'm not sure. In all the time that we've had the new method, I've never actually built it, so I'm not sure where we stand. I think the only difference is that we're now at stage 20 with both characters and robots.
>>
>>14915037
>>14915384
thanks to you two for help

yes, I've asking if there any changes in new and it seems that yes, so I've to merge those files but can't get them to work

wait for Dash

or Black you know how we merge ?

thanks Bring Stabity for your precious help until now ;)
>>
it's ok, i've managed to merge them, will continue to follow the tuto...

Aw man, I wish I could be scuba diving while doing a let's play of SRW.
>>
>>14915448
I know, it's mind-boggling how he manages to do it.
>>
sorry to bother you again, I've managed to implemante vwf to the game, and I can (now) run it with dolphin 5.0 and it works with english translation

I've encounter a slighty problem, there are some text remains in japanese like the name of pilots (when we start the game, and we have to choose one either male or female)

and few texts remains in japanse (narrator)

i've missed one line ?

(i've retry with old method and the pilots name are translated)

other than that, the new method works perfectly, i've english subs when the characters speaks :D

thanks to all
