As a combat medic from an armored unit, I am compelled to state that medical vehicles often look exactly like other vehicles from the outside with the sole exception of the giant red cross we hang outside to tell people not to shoot us.

Which usually guarantees you're the highest priority target as soon as you appear on the battlefield, because killing a group's doctor demoralises them. At least, that's the case if you're affiliated with a particular side, even if you'll help both sides. If you're an impartial doctor like those with Medicins Sans Frontier it's not quite as big an issue, but you're less likely to be on the battlefield if that's the case.

There's no combat medic-specific armor or uniform, typically it's little more than a small patch or armband that you'd have to specifically look for. It mainly helps friendly troops looking for medical personnel.

This is also because cobat medical personnel and vehicles otherwise look exactly the same as regular troops. Our armored ambulance Bronco looks just like any other Bronco, complete with machine guns on top, and without the giant medic flag we hang from the side, nobody would be able to tell who we were and people would die while the stretcher/evac party was looking for us.

Also, medics are just as well protected as any other combat unit (they carry weapons and armor in addition to their medical kit) and tend to operate out of the line of fire (that is, they will hang back and wait for casualties to be brought to them).

By this I mean that the average infantry platoon medic waits about 500m to 1 km behind the combat teams, while the number is 5 to 10 times that for armored units since we have vehicles.

Medicins Sans Frontier and other civilian medical outfits ought to operate in a similar way. They basically set up in a neutral place far from a combat zone and treat everyone brought to them. Even if shooting neutral civilian medical personnel is verboten, it does happen because people are dicks, especially in war.

Well the point was that if you hang a big sign on the side of your vehicle or body and venture on to a battlefield as >>14603887 mentioned the enemy will spot you and target you first. The red cross doesn't guarantee your safety on a battlefield, only makes it easier for people, comrades included to find you as you say. If you only make small, discreet insignia for your personnel and mostly keep them back from the battlefield then obviously the changes of them being in danger are much smaller, but any signs your own side can spot have a chance of being spotted by the enemy and medics can and do venture in to battle to help comrades despite the risks on occassion.
