Other reason why is that while Rods from God could serve as good bunker busters and put some some holes in hive but will suck as blowing up large areas. Schwarzesmarken takes place in East Germany in an alternate 1983 where aliens have landed and are slowly taking over the planet in a torturous land battle. The aliens do not appear to be particularly intelligent, content to win battles through sheer numbers, but since they cannot be reasoned with, humans have no choice but to fight.

Though the aliens can be slain with conventional weapons, mecha are particularly useful for taking out the living alien artillery, and the 666th squadron, nicknamed Schwarzesmarken, is East Germany’s best unit.

Though the series did not immediately grab me, the opening episode had enough potential that I decided to come back, and it grew on me more than I thought it would.

First of all, the show had several things working against it. 1) It’s a prequel to Muv-luv Alternative, which is a series I’ve passed on watching because it’s based on a visual novel with dating elements aimed at heterosexual men. 2) It has a predominantly female cast, which in anime doesn’t necessary mean they’re looking to expand the female audience as much as to provide fanservice. 3) I was afraid it would end up being a harem anime where the “luckless” male protagonist would end up with the affections of multiple women.

Fortunately, it’s not as bad as that. Even though it is a prequel, it’s watchable on its own with the understanding that the aliens will not be defeated by the end of the show. The female cast is varied enough that members of the main 666th squadron don’t get mistaken for each other (and there are women in incidental roles outside the squadron, including the main villain and a middle aged woman in charge of a military base). The outfits are fanservicey, but there are few butt shots, outside of when one sleazebag male commander is around and he’s not in every episode.

But best of all, main character Theodor is a complicated protagonist. He might not have much luck, but he’s not hapless. As a teenager Theodor and his family tried to flee East Germany only to be captured by the Stasi, who were historically among the most effective and cruel secret police forces in existence.

His family’s capture, murder, and the fact he sold them out during his own torture, weighs on him. Though he’s now a soldier for East Germany and scarcely believes in the party line, he’s afraid of taking any steps towards freedom because he knows what that costs. The way to survive is to keep one’s head low and just do the job.

That begins to change with the arrival of Katia Waldheim, a defector from West Germany with an idealistic hope that both Germanys can work together again. Furthermore, Theodor learns that Irisdina Bernhard, his commanding officer, is not the Stasi informant that he thought she was, and in fact is willing to work against them.

Though this is a mecha anime, a lot of time is spent on political maneuvering between different parties and even within the 666th squadron. Aliens are the outside threat, but they are not the only one, and possibly not even the most dangerous one. In fact, many of the stasi, chiefly Beatrix Brehme and her toady, Heinz Axmann, are far more horrifying and inhumane then the alien threat. What’s guaranteed though is that every episode will have a mecha battle, and the marvelous thing is that each of the battles feels like it earns its place in the story. The battles are never filler.

That said, there are some questionable decisions made throughout the series considering that East Germany’s very existence is at stake. Cynics will be unsurprised that when a country needs unity the most is when it’s least able to come together, but considering how remorseless the aliens are, I can’t help wondering if the human antagonists really think it’s worth winning a battle if they lose the war just to selfishly maintain power.

The body count is on the high side and the show doesn’t shirk away from showing the complete moral depravity and sadism of its main villains, though most of the most brutal scenes are concentrated towards the beginning and the end. There is some censorship of the graphically worst deaths, but bullet and shrapnel wounds remain visible, people end up reduced to bloody messes, mass killings and torture recalling the worst of communist regimes are perpetrated, and there's even offscreen rapes courtesy of the stasi villains.

One thing I do want to mention though, because it’s a trope I usually try to avoid, is that Schwarzesmarken seems to have this weird little sister attraction going on, both with Theodor’s younger sister and another character who explicitly reminds him of his little sister. Theodor himself doesn’t seem to be interested in that train, but the writers have no problem putting him on board, and in the case of his true sister, saying that the situation gets messy is an understatement.

Since this is a prequel I’ll note that the ending does not resolve the alien problem, but it does all come together on a bittersweet and hopeful note with all the plot threads relevant to the characters involved tied off satisfactorily.

Overall I think this is one of the better mecha series I’ve watched and if one is not immediately dissuaded by what may well be one of the creepiest little sister character ever, it’s worth checking out for the well scripted battles and the unusual setting.

Pluses: unusual period setting of communist 1980s East Germany, great, uncompromising view of the evils of authoritarianism, gender progressive and puts females in equal standing even including a main antagonist that's not "softened" just because she's a woman, Theodor is an unusually damaged protagonist making him a welcome change of pace

Minuses: spray-on bodysuits, even though the characters are German they behave like Japanese, what is with the off-putting little sister character?

Shirakawa Minori: Main character's childhood friend and classmate. Gets along with other heroines, group chats with them on a "message app" (LINE?). Daikuuji Iyo: Related to the Daikuuji clan. Weird name is because she was named by Ayu. Ayu is now a successful global businesswoman. The Daikuuji group is run by Ayu's brother Gaiou. Iyo admires Ayu. Favourite colour is gold.

Takamori Misaki: Classmate. Likes teamwork and exercise, hates thinking. Was a troublemaker in middle school, where her form teacher was Chizuru, who is still a middle school teacher as of 2016. Favourite colour is orange.

LD11 Strike Frontier: Interview with Tashiro Hayato on Strike Frontier

Tashiro's role in working with DMM is overseeing that SF doesn't "break the setting" of Muv-Luv (ie- put in stupid shit that's out of place). He did the same on Next Answer so apparently dead people dressing up in skimpy idol outfits is not out of place in Muv-Luv Alternative. He's also in charge of the main scenario and some of the character scenario scripts.

The main goal of the main scenario is to expand the world they've already built. This will show old fans new possibilities, and also help introduce the world to new people (using DMM as a platform is also to get more new users). The story is similar but different to Alternative. The player character AND the main five heroines are from our world's 2016. Takeru and the usual people are still in the Alternative world so we meet them there. Each main scenario chapter consists of five episodes, episodes are unlocked through fulfilling conditions like "defeat this many BETA".

Having these new characters have links to the grown up 2016 versions of the old characters is part of how they're expanding the world. Minori's link to Tama is because he wanted Minori to do kyudo, which emphasises strength deep down. Old fans should remember Meiya complaining about Takeru using Sky Temple, and that the Mitsurugi zaibatsu's food business was mentioned as being bad then. Rinka's parents are in charge of the Mitsurugi food business. There's a branch opposite Sky Temple. The food business is named Yuumei-an (yuu and mei are of course from Yuuhi and Meiya).

Daikuuji being involved is because Tashiro wanted to do it. Iyo's name is not just Ayu's shifted one character down on the kana chart- Ayu is also Himiko, leader of the Sakimori. The name Himiko comes from that of the queen of the Yama-taikoku and her successor was named Iyo.

Misaki and Akaru are the last characters to show up. They wanted to make them stand out more, and so Misaki wears an outer over her BDU and Akaru gets the pillow-hat. The characters all brought some stuff like smartphones and wallets with them from their world, but this can't really be shown through the art, and they wanted something that could be shown through the art, thus pillow-hat.

Regular and R-18 versions share data so users can play both versions with the same stuff. Only difference is the character scenarios. Each character has five chapters in each version.

It's undetermined if the stuff in Alternative will happen in SF. However Takeru IS Alternative Takeru who's been through Unlimited. He tries not to change history too much but the main character and the heroines are already a massive change. Since this is a social game, they'll be able to change the story based on the reactions of the users, too. They want to balance "new possibilities" and "introducing Alternative". Tashiro already has several ideas, but isn't sure if he'll be able to use them. One thing is concrete so far: Tama's dad does show up, as Yuuko decides that they shouldn't stop the HSST incident, though for different reasons compared to Alternative.

I'm worried they'll make the story too friendly simply because this is an audience less exposed to death in their shit so they'll probably not like those aspects and they'll get cut short. For example if they decided one of the original heroines dies during the story(They could easily do that and any interaction you do with her outside of the main story could just be implied to be before she died.) people would probably be against that and it'd be a somewhat generic mecha story where the main characters are untouchable.
