IF I DIE IN THIS WORLD
WHO WILL KNOW
SOMETHING OF ME

I AM LOST
NO ONE KNOWS
THERE'S NO TRACE
OF MY YEARNING

BUT I MUST
(IF I DIE IN THIS WORLD)
CARRY ON
(WHO WILL KNOW)
NOTHING WORSE
(SOMETHING OF ME)
CAN BEFALL

ALL MY FEARS
(I AM LOST)
ALL MY TEARS

THERE IS A HOLE

I WEAR A VOID
NOT EVEN HOPE
A DOWNWARD SLOPE

AS LONG AS BREATH COMES FROM MY MOUTH

TO CEASE THE DARKNESS KILLING ME

It's disruptive, but it's being disruptive in a good way.
The Godzilla franchise needed a kick start, and this is the best way of doing so:
>Over the top and disturbing design.
>New abilities that open up new possibilities for Godzilla.
>Mystery to what Godzilla actually is.
>Deliberately making brash choices in order to get people talking.

Now that a "Fully" CG Toho Godzilla has been made, Toho/Friends can understand what works and didn't work, tie loose ends, and work towards other monsters in the future.

>>14577328

Fuck off. Godzilla was an antagonist from 1954 to 1964. Then in 1984 and 2001. Otherwise he's been either a super hero or anti-hero.

So allegedly JR Lipartito, Jim Ballard, and Norman England hate Shin Godzilla. Ballard went as far as to call it the worst Godzilla film. He and Lipartito uploaded a lengthy video about it. I guess everyone's favorite insiders dislike Anno's work on the franchise. But unlike Final Wars, where England wasn't thrilled either, Shin Godzilla has done great business and most opinions are quite positive.

It's rather harsh, anon. They dislike the visuals (save a few scenes) and said it looked terrible. Laughable actually. They didn't like the audio effects or the soundtrack. And they described the characters and story as ineffective and flat. Ultimately, one of the worst, if not the worst, Godzilla films and a bad film in general. How is that not scathing?

>>
>>14580115
Did your mother drop you on your head as a kid? Anno's work is campy as fuck.
>>
>>14580090
I don't know. They sounded thoroughly dissatisfied, saying they don't understand how people could be so positive about it and in the comment section they said it was in the bottom three of the franchise. And people usually place Godzilla vs Megalon, Godzilla vs SpaceGodzilla, and Godzilla's Revenge down there. Someone who is supposedly in touch with them said they consider it their least favorite Gflick. Bad story and lackluster characters + terrible visuals + inappropriate sound/score = Not that scathing?

What really took the cake is that they praise the story and characters of G14. Even many of those who like that film aren't bold enough to go that far. Most just take the opportunity to bash the franchise. Honestly, I think Ballard just strongly dislikes Anno. Seems that way at least, especially since he isn't fond of Evangelion either.
>>
>>14580138
>Anon provides a flaccid rebuttal, fumbles the execution, and offers no evidence to support his whimpers

Try harder next time little boy.
>>
>>14580061
So they watched a Godzilla film. They just described EVERY fucking Godzilla film. Holy shit.
>>
>>14580139
That's them being crabby. And Ballard is a crabby fellow. At least in the video itself they seem to stress that it just want their taste.

As for personally disliking Anno, that makes sense. Similar to August and Norman England's apparent negative media campaign against Final Wars because of Kitamura, or J.D Lees' outright personal vendetta against Kaneko (he refused to think of GMK as a Godzilla film)
>>
>>14580139
>Praise

I don't know about the first two, but he HATES Gamera 3. Granted, it's a dark as fuck movie about the friend of all children. It made the original Gamera director sad. But still.

Godzilla is 62 years old, it's natural for older fans not to like newer iterations, especially if they arent already familiar with Anno's style.

>>
>>14580326
He comes off to me as a generic American kaiju fan, not hardcore-deep into the stuff, but not that much of a casual either. He has a lot of fondness for old-school stuff he knew as a kid, so I wouldn't be surprised if he found the changes they made to Godzilla off-putting, even if he likes the film overall. Maybe he'll react a similar way as to G14: like it at first because it's Japanese, then get second thoughts on it.

What does it matter, though?
>>
>>14580391
James hates generic American monsters, it's why he didn't like the MUTOS

Not all, but certainly most old folks fucking hate any kind of change done to what they precieve as "they're" movies.
>>
>>14580381
Closest thing I found was this:

Interviewer: What do you think of GAMERA - THE GUARDIAN OF THE UNIVERSE and GAMERA 2 - LEGION ATTACK?
Noriaki Yuasa: They are movies for older fans of monster films rather than children. I'd prefer them to be children's movies.
The two films are too dramatic. For example, there is no need for Asagi's cheek to be cut in GAMERA - THE GUARDIAN OF THE UNIVERSE. There's also no need for Gamera to be the guardian of the universe. (Ayako Fujitani plays Asagi Kusanagi, a young woman who has a telepathic link to Gamera, in both GAMERA - THE GUARDIAN OF THE UNIVERSE and GAMERA 2 - LEGION ATTACK.)
They're just Gamera movies. They're not art films.
>>

For Yuada, making children smile was art.

No they didn't, which is a major reason why the franchise swiftly turned away from the more terrifying, serious tone of the first film. Read up on it; people were laughing in the cinemas, even back in 1954. And others felt bad for Godzilla.

It can't have been that convincingly monstrous then, could it?

>>
>>14580604
Ishiro Honda wanted to keep an air of seriousness about his films. Shinichi Sekizawa and Eiji Tsuburaya were the ones more interested in targeting younger audiences. As the competition increased (Gamera and other monsters) and the ticket sales decreased (Japanese film industry was on the decline) Toho mandated the change in order to secure said younger audiences.

Honda's early films (G54, Mothra vs Godzilla, Ghidorah, Monster Zero) have the best human characters. Fukuda could deliver too.
>>
>>14580643
Ghidorah had the worst human cast in the entire franchise, literally every single human was an unlikable cunt who took over the whole movie with the retarded expionage garbage that felt like it came out of another movie.

Anno took the same approach (using the monster to address the anxieties of the time) without settling simply for a straight-forward remake or something else safe in nature. Gojira was shocking for its day, though I'm not so sure an updated replica would be enough. So Anno, using his unique visionary direction, made a more grotesque product. It's very familiar, yet very different at the same time. And if the positive reception is any indication, it seems like he managed to breathe new life into a stagnant series.
>>

>>
>>14582473
Doesn't matter. He was the special effects guy. We should ask what Sekizawa would think.

>>14582473
Ishiro Honda said this in the 90s:
"Godzilla was a product of the times. There previously had been no monster like him. So, people were frightened, and shocked, by him. Now, when Godzilla appears in a city, most of the buildings are even taller than he is!

The image of what a monster is shouldn't stay the same. It should be different so that people will be shocked and surprised, just as they were by GODZILLA - KING OF THE MONSTERS in 1954. Something new, and strange, must be created."

And speaking of Tsuburaya, how do you anons feel about pic related? Is this the bold vision the Ultra series needs now?
>>
>>14580053

Not missiles, but GP bombs, probably 2000lb Mark 84s by the size of the blasts. Due to the delayed fuse and Godzilla's super-tough skin, it's not that farfetched that they'd act like that.

Didn't Sekizawa play a significant role in pushing the series into a more light-hearted direction? Tsuburaya didn't mind, he had noticed that children loved the monsters and wanted to entertain them. Honda didn't exactly approve of too much silliness. I wonder how Toho convinced him to direct Godzilla's Revenge.
>>

Whimpering strawman isn't an argument, nor is failing to provide any reason the fat ass should be held in the same esteem as the real fathers of Godzilla.

Not significantly; Tsuburaya was in full grandpa mode by the time Mothra was in production, and you can see it in all of his work past that sans Matango. He's even quoted during Ultra Q's production as advising his writing staff not to write anything too graphic because the tykes will be watching.

Surely you jest...

Somewhat relevant, Honda's thoughts on the early Heisei films:
Interviewer: What do you think of the most recent Godzilla movies? (They include GODZILLA VS. BIOLLANTE (1989), GODZILLA VS. GHIDRAH (1991), and GODZILLA VS. MOTHRA (1992).)
Honda: That's a very difficult question to answer. I don't really have a positive or negative opinion about them. The special effects technically are very sophisticated, but the films lack imagination. It seems as if all Toho is trying to do is show things being destroyed. I don't fault the members of the production department, though, because I know that that is what Toho's executives are demanding.
>>
>>14582752
I mean, ultimately, I'd settle for the old stories with modern effects. Terror of Mechagodzilla redone would be amazing. Hell, just re-do both of the Mechagodzilla movies with modern technology, and keep the older design mentality with modern effects. I'd be happy. Throw in the Megalon movie and maybe Godzilla vs the Sea Monster...

They probably wanted to build AC units into the suits for the actors or something. Obviously whatever the problem was ended after Destroyah cleared the way for the 2000 design (which I also liked, but didn't like the head.) If I could get the mobility of the 2000 suit with a head more like bioGoji's, it'd be better.

And you're definitely right, we need some new stories in the mix. I'd just be happy to see some of my favorites re-imagined with perhaps a bit tighter of a story.

This is pretty much the fundamental nature of critique in general for as long as the masses are able to make their voices heard.

It's not that I'm some teary-eyed idealist who wants everyone to be positive all the time, it's just that I expected a little better from the senior members of the fandom.

Let me put it this way: Godzilla has changed dozens of times throughout his history to the point he may as well be a dc character. If these older fans could weather the change from grumpy dinosaur to superheroic dinosaur to animalistic dinosaur, then deal with constant reboots of the Millennium series, why should a bad case of ichthyosis and purpledrank breath be considered sacrilegious?

TL;DR: these old fucks know Godzilla never stays the same, and should stop acting like /v/irgins when the series takes a new direction.

Anno cared about his critics, considering Shinji is based on himself and he looks awkward as fuck on the interviews. It's just that Anno musn't run away., just like Shinji get into the damn robot and he receive shit in-universe and out-universe for it

Most of /tv/ hasn't even seen it . Probably not even the trailer, which doesn't tell you much. /m/ has more credibility in this case. And if it means anything, most people who've seen it seem to love it.

The Japanese are loving it.

Shin Godzilla has a lot of political/social satire stuff that foreginers fail to understand, but keynote is bright and positive.
Considering Anno's depression recentry he confessed, it was surprise for us and we're happy to see that.
It's like Godzilla 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone.

I meant more along the lines of the eccentric nature of the cinematography, exaggerated acting, and text covering the screen I keep hearing about. And Tarantino has somewhat comedic undertone to his work at times.

Solved your own problem, anon. Most people simply forgets it exists. Not even a bad film. Just unmemorable.

Anybody got a screencap of the skeletons on the tail?
>>
>>14584590
Althouth I consider it one of the most G films, unadjusted for inflation, it's the most successful Japanese film in the franchise. Adjusted, King Kong vs Godzilla is on top. I think Shin Godzilla has a chance at dethroning both.

Has Steve Ryfle, August Ragone, or AVGN shared their thoughts about SG yet?
>>
>>14584610

Could pic related still be threatening?
>>
>>14584649
It still could be if you attach a gimmick that makes him an inescapable terror.

like anything within 100 meters gets lethal radiation poisoning that causes their skin to fall off their bones.

Otherwise you wind up with 99' Zilla who was fast enough and small enough compared to the NY skyline that you could lose sight of it easily and thermals didn't pick it up.

I think smaller monsters work better when they're fighting other monsters. Then you can have the buildings to use as cover or set an arena.
>>
>>14584649
Your image incorrectly depicts what its size would be. Those building are in the 200-300m range, so Godzilla should be close to a quarter their height, not 5% of their heigh.
