The characterization was complete garbage. Simon and Yoko didnt have personalities, Kamina was annoying almost the entire time he was alive. Viral jobbed everywhere he went. The only person who cares about Nia both in universe and outside of it was Simon. The side characters are all literally who's.

The action wasn't even good. Most conflicts are resolved via asspulls and it cheapens that victorious feeling.

The plot was as barebones as plots go, pretty much an exact copy of Getter Rob's plot points. Lordgenome jobbed hard, antispiral was too powerful and had to nerf himself just so the protagonists can defeat him.

The show isn't as meaningful as it pretends to be but it's a whole lot of explosive fun.

Simon had potential, but they fucked up with the introduction of Nia. All his growth took a back seat so he could be Nia's perfect boyfriend. I'm sure they could have introduced a love interest in a way that didn't just take Simon from being Kamina's supporting character, to Nia's supporting character.

Don't get me wrong, there were a few good moments, like when with the help of Nia, Simon got over Kamina's death and manned up. But that should have been just one step on Simon's journey, not an end point. All his his material material in the post time skip material just felt so static. It felt like Simon was faking it (Which I suppose fits, since Kamina was faking it the whole time, but it doesn't make it any less disappointing.)

I liked the TTGL more from a design standpoint. The problem is, the anime doesn't understand scale at all. Visually it is portrayed as a stupidly enormous mech, but it doesn't feel like one. The mechanics of the fight were no different from the Gurren fights on Earth: for example "grab a rock and hurl it" becomes "grab a galaxy and hurl it". How the hell to you even grab a galaxy when it's a collection of stars moving within the same gravity well, so more like a fluid than a solid object? It was just a rinse and repeat with a different backdrop. And what's even worse is that the show took itself way too seriously after the time-skip, so you literally have to turn your brain off to suspend disbelief for the finale. If they had kept the tone consistent, it might have worked a little better.

Diebuster was so much better at doing this whacky "fuck physics" thing. It threw logic to the curb in a much more believable manner.
