It can be done really well

it's just usually not.

You should got watch Etotama. You should all go watch Etotama

That was freaking 2004, they've done some massive progress in over a decade of fucking around with CG
>>
>>14572696
Was that the 2004 one? I thought it looked worse than that

But you're right, the sequels looked nice

Shame about the adaptation of the story

It probably would, at least with people not too familiar with the manga. I've read some of it and I wouldn't care personally (though I didn't see the movie) since I don't really care what he used to look like so much as what he does look like.
>>
>>14572796

It changes his character quite a bit though. He was an african soldier who got fucked shredded not some pretty boy.

Yukikaze's first episode rolled out in 2002.

To this day it still shits on the state of broadcast CGI.

For a technology often decried for showing its age too easily, its CGI has stood the test of time brilliantly.

When Japan goes for a realistic style with CG it usually looks fine. Cel-shaded CG tends to be hit or miss.
>>
>>14573344
I find it's more to do with art direction and how it helps to define the world of the work through its look.

Visual representation is its own form of world building.

Unfortunately I feel few others share this sentiment and prefer to go for raw framerate and other technical-level factors.

The Thing 2011 got shafted so hard by executives it wasn't even funny. I still like it though, given what the crew had to put up with.

You're part of the problem. You can respect the crew without given a pass to the shit movie.

>>
>>14573823
Do people genuinely dislike this, other than people who unconditionally hate CG no matter what it looks like?

Because this CG looks pretty good and suits Patlabor's weightier mecha.
>>
>>14574192

I dislike it for being a reboot with bad character design that's just scavenging off a long finished series that had a great ending. How's that count.
>>
>>14574192
I hate it for being a 10-minute high-budget short film that isn't assed to be entirely hand-drawn.

CGI is only excusable (I didn't say good or decent, I said excusable) when you have a small budget strained over a lot of episodes and if it looks decent.
>>
I can't stand CGI in anything desu. 2016 and it still looks like video gamey shit.

>b-b-but you don't even notice CG when it's used well, like for background inlays and...!

shut the fuck up that's not what I'm talking about and you know it
>>
>>14574210
It almost always looks like ass when they do the whole thing in CG, character animation included.
>>
>>14574195
It's not like they pointed at the characters and went "this is noa now, this is gotoh now" and somehow ruined Patlabor forever because a bunch of animators wanted to do a Patlabor thing for an expo.
>>
>>14574227

Patlabor pretty much WAS it's characters though. Even if you toss an ingram there and an SV2 uniform it just feels cheap. Even WXIII at least tried to expand the universe but this? This is somebody's fanfic. I don't care about new Ingram pilot or new car driver. It's not SV2
>>
>>14574250
What's wrong with focusing on different characters in the same setting? It doesn't do anything to diminish the value of the rest of the franchise merely by existing.
>>
>>14574260
>What's wrong with focusing on different characters in the same setting?

Because they're not. If they wanted to get away from the core cast and expand the universe we wouldn't be getting SV2 again, we wouldn't be getting ingrams again.

The reuse of these core elements only show how little confidence they have in the new characters. They could easily do some other major metro city police force or the military or anything with new labors and a new group. They didn't.
>>
>>14574437
very symptomatic of the whole rebooting trend and why it mostly sucks:
clumsy attempts to make old IPs appeal to the new generation (with new techniques and character designs) combined with clumsy attempts to appeal to the old fanbase (with superficial, badly-done references to classic material) resulting in something that doesn't really appeal to either.
>>
>>14574210
>2016 and it still looks like video gamey shit.
Not everything look like a video game.
>>
>>14574480
I know but it's the CURRENT YEAR and most animation studios are actually putting out LESS CONVINCING CG than video games

And I think it's because the majority of CG animators just want to make video games, and those who end up in animation are mostly those who weren't good enough for the vidya industry or for fucking Pixar.

But that's just my theory.

If they wanted that they would have set it in America
>>
>>14574493
Irrelevant; anime isn't vidya, and vidya does not own exclusive rights to the use of CGI.

No one ever complains whenever anime has less frames of animation than Street Fighter III, why start now with 3d models?
>>
>>14573391
>The Thing 2011 got shafted so hard by executives it wasn't even funny
???
>>
>>14575107
Wait wait wait wait wait.

Did I mention FpS?
I was only complaining about the general visual aspect of a CGI picture compared to the drawing it's trying to imitate, and it happens to be less convincing in anime than in vidya, regardless of the FpS ratio.

If anything having a high FpS ratio makes cell-shaded CG less convincing because drawings aren't supposed to move with absolute fluidity.
>>
>>14575124
it was originally shot almost entirely with practical effects (puppets and whatnot) but executives said "nuuuh! audiences want CGI!" and as a result it looks mediocre.
>>
>>14575128
>exces ruin everything
idontknowwhatiexpected.jpg
>>
>>14574527
Truth be told, if Berserk 2016 did look like that all the time, I wouldn't mind. Well, at least until you start seeing movement again, then it all goes to shit.
>>
>>14575128
There were some things that were CGI, but yeah, it wasn't caked on like the final product.

CGI is a useful tool (John Carpenter has admitted that he would've used CGI if it was available to him), but it requires a good deal of work for it to look good. It's also the same with practical effects, a huge reason why the Carpenter's The Thing looks so good is because Rob Bottin worked himself into a hospital to get it done. And even then, they had to call in Stan Winston to do the Dog-Thing. And the Blair-Thing, as cool as it is, is pretty underwhelming as a climax once you get past the initial SAN loss.

Both '82 Thing and 2011 Thing had underwhelming final encounters. But I'm sure the latter's reason is that the executives cut the Alien pilot-Thing, so they had to use the Sander-Thing and it's accompanying underwhelming scene as a hurried replacement.
>>
>>14575125
>visual aspect of a CGI picture compared to the drawing it's trying to imitate

It's obviously less convincing because CGI is CGI, trying to make it look like something it isn't completely defeats the point of using CGI in the first place.

Like, people love to praise Guilty Gear Xrd's visual aesthetic, but the real trick to why it's good isn't that the models have frames of animation dropped so as to emulate sprite-based animation; it's the use of dynamic camera alongside excellent visual composition in as many opportunities as possible that makes it work. It cultivates a style and doubles down on it.

I think the field of stylish CGI is underexplored in animation, that its utilization is lazier than it should be.

Though, considering that rendering does have a cost attached to it, I wonder if there has been a bottleneck to creativity in anime CGI this entire time; maybe no one can exceed the bottom line effort because it's not financially viable?
>>
>>14573261
This looks like a shitty CGI European children show.
>>
>>14574208
CG needs buget, why do you think it always looks like shit in anime. While there are a few exceptions, Japan's 2d has always been about cutting corners and saving budget to produce the most cost effective animation

>it's a "let's apply 2D limited animation techniques to CGI" episode
When we will these gook fucks learn that the advantage of CGI is being able to do things that would be almost impossible for 2D animation? Fucking Beast Wars looks better than 99% of the shit Japan shovels out because Mainframe understood this and added a lot of body language to the characters.
>>
>>14575292
>CG needs buget,

Yeah, Voltron Legendary Defender does a good job mixing 3dcgi and 2D. (And has the reverse problem where the 2D looks like shit compared to the 3D in my opinion.)

I think one of the issues is when you go CG, you have to change your style and animation to actually match you're now working with another medium. The anime cel shading look just looks jarring, they are not trying to embrace 3D, but find a cheap way to replace 2D animation, where they should be embracing a new "anime style" that works with 3D animation and embraces 3D animation.

If Clone Wars tried to emulate 2D animation with cell shading and low frame rate and such, it probably would have looked very jarring.
