Who the fuck thought unupgradable weapons would never get annoying in a game running on Winky formulas?
Even Panzer Warfare knew better than that and it let you upgrade your pilot's stats which directly affected the machine's performance, although it could've used traditional upgrades with money.

There is a point in Shin where part of your group goes to assault an enemy base, and then leaves before they finish. There's a later point where your entire squad goes to said base, and then you don't get to fight there for another few stages. In that time, Voltes comes back and beats up like seven enemies, and then Layzner debuts and it and Voltes beat up like five enemies. These are separate stages. They then join back with the rest of the cast and you do the attack. There are multiple missions in the early Space act that are literally the same damn thing.

You're having a good time with your robits and then suddenly Voltes comes in and its theme completely fucking wrecks the pace of your game because it's basically the antithesis of what works as a battle theme.
And I don't think they've ever used any other Voltes track in any SRW game.

I know Combattler has Let's Combine in Alpha and Alpha Gaiden, so it at least has that (even if its own theme is better)

I won't deny it's got that slav feel to it, but Voltes's theme is fantastic. One of my favorite 70s mecha themes.
If anything, Reideen's theme will break your immersion because of the children's choir.

SALLY is literally Main Title arranged to be faster and more suited for a battle scene. It is completely incomprehensible why most SRW games insist on using Main Title regardless, and sometimes we don't even get Beyond the Time to make up for it.

Unicorn seems to be running into this issue too, but at least UNICORN is a pretty bombastic theme. Hopefully one day they'll use one of the EDs, though.

It's just Sawano doing EBIN music, literally all of his OSTs except Kill la Kill which was probably his best work since it didn't sound like him at all. Unicorn on the other hand was just one song with different versions. A good song mind you, but the OST really lacks variations.

Basara is a genuine pacifist, he doesn't believe in fighting even in self-defense. The problem with Sawano is that people want him to make Sawano music, thus he gets pigeonholed into making the same arrangements, using the same instruments and melodies and shit, but I think he's a decent composer, not a good one, but a decent one, some of his Xenoblade tracks are nice to the ears for instance, besides the cringeworthy lyrics of some tracks.

Speaking of the Helios, it's a shame it only gets three-odd attacks, it really doesn't feel like it lives up to its in-game descriptor as an eldritch God of sorts. If we see it in OGs, it'll probably have more, since we know that Advent was jobbing with it on purpose to enact his Final Ultimate Ruse Z against his old not-friends.

Yuki Kajiura has a lot more variety in their compositions than Sawano does without the cringey lyrics.

Way I see it Sawano is more like a decent composer who was thrust into the limelight way before they had properly developed their music. Result is now they're constantly doing jobs and have no time to diversify themself.

He's kind of like Motoi Sakuraba if he didn't have 20 odd years to practice most of which on low key projects that didn't matter how they turned out so he goes back to his bread & butter and the same fucking soundfonts.

Half of the reason Unicorn's OST even works is because he was working with a proper orchestra instead of his usual setup.

That's an interesting view on the matter, even though I don't completely agree with it.

And I wouldn't compare him with Sakuraba because unlike Sawano he has proven time and again to be a great composer, especially in his non vidya compositions, he has been around for a lot more time than Sawano so it's not really fair to compare them and he suffered a lot from having next to no time on working on OSTs and was hired by everyone and their mother, I can forgive him for sounding a bit samey, you can say the same about Koshiro in his golden days and pretty much every big name back then.
I love Itoken, but even he got a bit samey back in the early 00's when he got to work on a shitload of games.
I'd say it's still early to judge Sawano properly, he needs to expand his portfolio first.

You know who's a minor composer who really surprised me? Naoyuki Sato, I found him with Frontier Gate on the PSP because his battle themes were bomb, made some research about him and he's a pretty cool minor composer, and most of the artists that worked on Frontier Gate aren't big names either but fuck me if they didn't make a masterpiece of an OST, a shame it's a really niche game, it deserves way more love than it got, even with all its faults.

Sayaka is a good support unit and best if paired with Kouji, but she's really fragile, if you like the Mazinkaiser cast and always deploy them together then she's pretty much vital to use them at their fullest, otherwise just use Aki and the Blue Earth.

I never really use support units in SRW. Most of the time they're just dead weight in comparison to the units that can actually deal damage, since you can just use spirits and items to heal and recover EN.

Koshiro still IS in his golden days, he is one of these composers who has only continued to grow strength to strength. For a really easy example just compare the earliest Etrian Odyssey soundtracks he made with some of the later ones. They have grown noticeably more complex whilst retaining his style without sounding the same. Most people who watched and praise MJP don't even seem to realize Yuzo Koshiro composed the main theme tunes for that show without listening more carefully.

Nah, he doesn't get nearly as many titles to work on these days, that's also a reason why he comes up with high quality compositions, back when he was working full time for Sega you could tell the man kind of whipped up stuff just to fill the quota, but then again, who didn't? With that much to work on and that kind of pressure it's no biggie really, he still made many memorable pieces of music.

Yeah, he's one of those minor Konami composers who does a lot of work on minor titles, I think the most important title he got to work on was Beatmania, a shame because I think he's really talented despite his relatively young age, he should do more stuff.
Coincidentially, I also like other people who worked on Beatmania and ended up doing the Frontier Gate soundtrack, Yasunori Nishiki for instance, all relatively minor composers but again, they did a wonderful job.
