So apparently the movie did around $6.2 million over the weekend in Japan. For comparison, Space Battleship Yamato did $6.2 million its opening weekend and made around $49 million overall in Japan. If the word of mouth helps the movie get at least $30 million in the home country I have little doubt that we can have our next Godzilla film in 2018 before Godzilla 2 comes out in the west.

The second form looks pretty bad, but it's a good bad- It moves like a Showa era tokusatsu puppet with its head bobbing around like it's being moved with strings.

The third and fourth forms are perfectly fine.

The only really bad CG is on the second form: Close-ups of it, the blood it splashes out of its gills, and the weird shimmering effect on the skin when it evolves into the third form.

Aside from the tail's movement it's hard to tell that the fourth/final form isn't just a guy in a suit most of the time.

Until a home video release or some material where we can get a clearer shot of the tail, I don't know what it is. I don't think the tail looks like that at any other point in the movie, the first three forms have the tail looking fully-skinned, but I can't remember clearly.

As far as I'm aware, a blockbuster Toho film has never received a theatrical release in mainland China before. We might be heading into uncharted territory with Shin Godzilla. Apparently the film is good and the effects are solid, so maybe it'll do well. Shin Godzilla had a larger Japanese opening than G14. And China pumped $77 million into G14.

At any rate, it *is* a pretty low budget movie, so unless they blow a lot on foreign marketing costs, it could feasibly profit from relatively small incomes.
