So a lot of creators get discussed on /m/, but what do you guys think of YAS? He seems to generally be ignored.
You're All Shit.

Or so YAS implies.

>So a lot of creators get discussed on /m/, but what do you guys think of YAS? He seems to generally be ignored.
In the context of his general work outside the films/shows he did in the 80's/Origin? Then yeah, I agree. Otherwise, it does get quite a decent bit of discussion from time to time on here an /a/. While most of his works aren't the greatest examples of their genre, they're still very much interesting enough to at least take a look at one way or more, especially for the art.
I honestly wished more of those interviews involving him were translated more. I really want to know more about him such as how he felt about his days at Mushi Pro or how was it meeting and collaborating with Tomino as well as other people in those pre-Gundam times, or even his retrospects on his work other than his films (which we know he isn't really that fond of). He really seems like an interesting guy to converse with at least on aspects of his career.

Arion and that tank film were cool
>>14563250
Do you mean Venus Wars?
Yeah, both were neat but suffer from pacing issues like almost all anime movies.
He's got less character designs than the average nip.
He cannot draw a neck to save his life.
He can't write a story.
He's got a recognizable art style.
>>14564851
Problem with Arion is that the MC one hits everything he fights
He's a cool guy.
>>14564870
>He's got less character designs than the average nip.
Nah. if anything it's about average to what your usual nip artist can draw, though the recycling is mostly restricted to the main character and about 2 or 3 side-characters at worst.
>He cannot draw a neck to save his life.
A matter of opinion. I think his necks are rather appealing really since they're a lot more closer to how western animators draw similar necks. Also, if I recall the necks of some designs done by his colleagues (such as Shioyama or even Kogawa) are done in a similar fashion sometimes.
>He can't write a story.
When it comes to his animated works somewhat. His manga (maybe after Arion for the most part) are a different tale altogether personally.

Giant Gorg was a lot of fun.

Amuro in drag
>>14565008
I came to post this. Yeah it's not the greatest show ever, but it's fun and has a nice sense of adventure to it.
>>14565052
>Looking close to it, Ghiren's neck is actually decently lengthed for a person his build
That said, very nice skills. You'd make a better colorist for ComicWalker's digital scans for the Origin even more than the guy they're currently hiring to do it.
>>14565052
He wears it well.
I love the way he draws women. They're sexy and appealing but not over the top anatomically, plush and natural-looking.
Also he's a better director than he gives himself credit for. Everybody I've shown Crusher Joe to has loved it, it's just solid fun. If somebody took a crack at adapting it into a modern live action movie in the wake of Guardians of the Galaxy and Star Wars getting re-booted, I think it'd be a big hit.
>>14565005
That is literally Amuro's head wtf
>>14565005
>>14574360
It's literally crossdressing Amuro and Kamille.
>>14574198
>Also he's a better director than he gives himself credit for.
Well he's only directed 3 things to my knowledge. Crusher Joe The Movie, Giant Gorg, and Arion.
>>14574530
There's also Venus Wars. Granted, that was relatively gimped, since there wasn't enough room for adapting the source material.
>>14560841
I liked Giant Gorg, that's about it.
>>14574399
Kei being Amuro I can understand, but Yuri comes from a somewhat different lineage altogether; one that I think pinpoints back to Lesphina from Arion, and goes all the way up to Fa from Zeta.
>>14575869
Arion was also relatively gimped to a fault as well; but surprisingly Kazeki, while also a bit cut managed to come out pretty decently, at least for what it was. That can most likely be thanks to Takemiya being a supervisor for the project though.
Everyone he's worked with like Tomino and Okawara have all called him a "genius", but I don't really see what's so stand out about him compared to other anime artists.
Most of the things he directed were things he wrote himself, so the guy tends to have more freedom to work with.

>>14576522
>Everyone he's worked with
Those are the key words. It's common for business partners to really compliment AND kinda hype up one another's skills like that, especially in the animation industry. Another example I can recall is someone like Otsuka claiming people like Sadamoto and Miyazaki are "more skilled than him".

He also directed an adaptation of Kaze to Ki no Uta.
