Seriously though, that's probably the best advice if you're just starting with that niche. Grab some references you like, consider what you like in a robot, and just draw it.

You can also look up how machinery and real world robotics work so you can have extra reference if you want to go that deep. But if you just want to do some nice and fun 70s style Suupa Robo, just do it.
