There was a lot of human drama but it was well-paced and not boring at all. It's really great seeing how the work of multiple individuals builds up to the point that they can defeat a giant monster. Made me feel good and like working more. Now I don't feel so bad about having to work this weekend.

Seems like they might make a sequel but it's not really necessary. 2000 and Tokyo SOS also did similar things to show that the threat of Godzilla might not be gone, Shin's probably something like that.

Shin Gojira is reportedly going to make $8 million dollars this weekend which would have it being the highest opening weekend for a Godzilla film since the 90s.

I know they're comedy movies with action, hell even the more 'serious' modern films can be comedic and self aware to an extent. I was fine with the comedy in, say, the first Godzilla vs Ghidorah film and I appreciate decisions like using a puppet horse getting eaten instead of a real horse in Frankenstein Conquers the World because 'it looks funnier' and tone is more important than realism (also that was right before Baragon eats those chickens and you see feathers come out of his mouth in a silly cartoonish way). They feel far more like a Japanese equivalent to The Muppets with more badassitude than "sci-fi" or "horror" films that you're meant to "lose yourself" in. I just don't like Minilla because his design is unlikable and he's more annoying than cute and funny. It's fun seeing big powerful monsters acting like cartoon characters but it's hard to make "omg so cute and cuddly and funny" characters likable to me.

I know a lot of fans hate it, it has really low review scores on Amazon Japan for example. But it seems fun from what I've seen. I've not looked deeply into the reviews but I highly suspect people mainly hate it because they feel the human action stuff is out-of-place and they feel that it's blasphemy/buying into modern trends to change Godzilla that much.

I still want to watch 2002 Mechagodzilla/Tokyo SOS but these torrents have been stuck at nearly the halfway point for a day now. I know people will say "JUST BUY THEM" but I usually treat buying piratable things as a showing of support moreso than a means of owning something.

I know this is an unpopular opinion but I'd honestly say Biollante was the most genuinely flawed one I've seen yet. Maybe I was biased because I felt it was an extremely cool concept wasted on mediocre execution but it was super disappointing.
