maybe I'm going through Mental Gymnastics here but, what if Meiya, and by association, the rest of squad 207, never actually loved Takeru in Alternative, but instead, received memories/feelings from Extra and Unlimited, and just accepted them.
At that point do they really "lose" the Takerubowl, if they didn't even want in it in the first place?

>capturing the Magic that was Mainline Muv Luv
For a while I've been trying to recapture that feeling I had when I really dived into weeb hobbies my senior year. It's something that I can best describe as a "honeymoon" period, because everything seems new, wondrous, and a fun ride. Muv-Luv, from Extra to Alternative managed to recapture that feeling I'd been wanting to feel again. I'm almost mad at myself that I'd been putting it off since June 6th 2012 when I saw pic related posted here (or /a/, I can't remember).

>nothing has, nor ever will come close
Really? Are they so bad that it's not worth watching, or just can't compare to the original material? The stuff showing a post-Alternative V world sounds pretty cool. And I'm not ashamed to admit that SM made me want to finally get ahead to reading the original thing.
>>
>>
>>14553155
If you liked SM, then the other spinoffs won't be a problem. SM is considered by many on /m/ to be by far the worse side story in the series.
>>
>>14553164
Why is SM ranked so low? I didn't think the anime was that bad.
>>
>>14553177

SM for me, even with only second-hand knowledge of Muv Luv until watching it made me want to go and read the original material, the ending was hard to fully stomach, because I knew they were all fucked anyways. And sometimes the drama was a bit too much for me.

>>14553164
I liked SM better than TE, but I never finished TE and I might give it another try now that I finished Alternative. I can see why others wouldn't like SM though, but I'm bad at articulating those reasons. What faults do people find with it?
>>
>>14553190
>What faults do people find with it

SM probably has the worst cast in the series. There are a few standouts, but most of them pale in comparison to even TE. Take Irisdina, who I think is supposed to be the main love interest, who barely gets developed. She's never anything but the Captain. She's always cold, professional, and commanding. While this isn't a bad thing, she never really veers from those traits and so comes off as more of a robot then a genuine human being until the very last scene, which comes out of nowhere. She doesn't really banter or joke with any of her men, even when not in mission, and remains a cypher.

Theo is a much more interesting and human character, but his development is even worse as he seems to jump around erratically. Thus, it's difficult to really take satisfaction in him evolving into a strong, courageous leader and hero at the very end.

Katia pretty much spits on most of ML's themes. She doesn't really believe in sacrifice, and has this sort of blind idealism. Despite having the spotlight, she never really seems to reach a major epiphany or anything, and remains the mostly idealist, cute little girl she started the series as. Despite the focus on her in the first half, she becomes more of a plot device then genuine character in the final half.

Gretel is probably one of the best characters. She's got personality, and is likeable/sympathetic while still retaining flaws, like a good character should and an actual character arc.

Lise is pretty much one of the most hateable characters ever. What's insulting is that they tried to shoehorn in audience sympathy by giving her a rape backstory and oh so sad music during her death, like that will make us ignore the fact that she enjoyed being a bitch. Her motives don't make an iota of logic either. I know she's crazy, but even then, she should be internally logical. Helping the people who fucked her over and want to execute her brother because she loves him so much is retarded.
>>
>>14553279

As for the villains, Beatrix is a one-dimensional villain who does evil because she's evil. Seriously, she's the type who if given two choices will pick the most evil choice even if it's the worst one. She's a really unlikeable character and she comes off as even more inhuman then many of the aliens her lips make her look like a baboon too. You can humanize characters with evil traits, like let's say Axmann, but Beatrix is just stupid evil. Axmann is the only villain worth anything, as he has a sort of slimy charm to him. I think he should of been the main antagonist as he actually seems to be somewhat intelligent and charismatic, versus Beatrix who treats even her own horribly. As an antagonist faction, the stasi really drag down the believability of the show.

The other characters don't matter too much. Annete's trauma is in and out of focus and seems to be random. Pham is someone who clearly deserved more screen time, as a glimmer of rationale kindness (unlike Katia) would do a lot to ground SM. I forget the other character's names, but that only shows you how much they don't matter.

I could go on about the edgy, dour, overly serious, humorless plot, or the technical aspects such as animation, but I'll stop with that otherwise I'll have to write a whole essay.

I could start Alternative now but fuck I backed this damn thing so I may as well wait for the improved version
>>
>>14553282
I remember there was that one other dude in the squad, who apparently had a thing going on with Sylvia.

>Katia pretty much spits on most of ML's themes

Yeah, in retrospect she kind of feels like a poor man's Takeru in that they both had a blind idealism to it, but are reluctant to do what necessary to achieve those ideals. And in Takeru's case, it was treated for what it was, another extension of his childish naivete, and another obstacle for him to overcome.

And I agree with you on the Stasi. Especially when entered the scene. The Stasi were pretty fucked up, but it seems more like Axmann's evil. Slimy, corrupt, but for the most part reasonable for the sake of self-interest.

Is this just a problem with anime, or with all of SM's media? I'm still not sure if it was originally a VN itself, or a LN.

And yeah, fuck Lise. Anything that involved her was awful since it was so obvious how it was going to go. I was really hoping Sylvia was going to pull the trigger.

From what I gleaned, the BETA unleash a huge g-particle wave in their latest attempt to stave off humanity or something and time gets fucked, so you have a patchwork of different timelines divided along geographic locations getting tossed together (East Germany is screwed for instances as it's now caught between two hives but hey, at least Beatrix and Iris might get their Jurgen back though). It's basically pic related, ML style. The worst thing is the superior from 2001 and his hive get resurrected, with all his knowledge on humans and their tactics, so the BETA are now more then just a mindless alien horde and are actually taking humanity seriously, but then, the humans are mass producing Susanoos and have a much higher population base to draw from with the time break. Finally, Yui becomes a casualty conduit.

>>14555377

That happens at the end of Alternate too you know.
>>
>>14555424
There is no way to confirm that, or is there?
>>
Will Bratty Savior get a card in SF?
>>
>>14555424
Wouldn't that require a shit ton of G elements?
>>
>>14555424
No, they began producing it's beam weaponry. The Susanoo can only be piloted with S00mika and ultimately kills its pilots, which is why they wouldn't mass produce it.
>>
>>14555391
This sounds like it's so full of shit.

>>14555441
>beam weaponry
Rail gun you mean. And the Susanoo was amazing not because of its offensive capabilities, but because the BETA could not touch it.
>>
>>14555434
Don't they need quantum computers for each XG-70 unit though? Things might be easier for that since it doesn't necessarily have to be a 00 Unit any more.
>>
>>14555452
But only Yuuko has the knowledge to make more of those though. If she didn't write anything down, or at least destroyed what she wrote, then the XG-70 is unpilotable.

And imagine what would happen if the BETA are defeated and there are large numbers of XG-70s around. I think its quite likely that Yuuko decided that they were too dangerous to be rebuild, at least in the post-Alternative timeline.
>>
>>14555468
Yuuko developed the weaponry while Susanoo was mostly an American effort IIRC.
>>
>>14555481
I meant the Quantum computer, the USA can build as many as XG-70s as they want.
>>
>>14555481
The reason XG-70 was abandoned is because no human could pilot it. It's useless without 00 Unit.
>>
>>14555521
>>14555494
technically, I just read this part, it was scrapped due to the constraints of the computers of the era, and the production of the G-bomb.
You don't need the 00 unit, or a quantum computer even to make the XG-70 work, as evidence by the fact it could work on auto-pilot or so Isumi hoped
>>
>>14555552
Well I suppose that any advanced enough computer can be used, but why would they need a quantum computer in to use it in the first place then? Why was Yuuko the first person in what was maybe decades, to try and revive it?
>>
>>14555552
>due to the constraints of the computers of the era
Which were not powerful enough to control the Rutherford field and prevent it from killing the pilot. That was the issue. The 00 unit, being a quantum computer, can do just that, which is why the XG-70d could be manned, on top of having the 00 unit on board.

>You don't need the 00 unit, or a quantum computer even to make the XG-70 work
I guess, but you can't really use it on autopilot to fight the BETA, just like you can't use TSFs on autopilot (well, you can, but they're not nearly as effective).
>>
>>14555573
Yuuko wanted the defense(EG the Rutherford Field).
what killed the Pilots was when it used its attack which shifted the Shifted the field and would ultimately splatter the contents inside because the onboard computers couldn't cope with trying to protect them.

>>14555578
I could be wrong but I don't think the Particle Cannon was dirty(EG didn't have the same effects as a G-bomb), since it used gray11 as energy, instead of a catalyst.
>>
>>14555592
>what killed the Pilots was when it used its attack
No, the test crew got gibbed when the Rutherford field came on, not when it fired or anything else.

So the Steam release of Muv Luv got me thinking.

Obviously back in like 2011 or so when MLA was first translated it was considered to have very high production values and SFX that push the boundary of the medium among the English-reading translated VN fanbase, for whom probably F/SN was the best they had experienced in terms of production values before MLA.

So my question is among the newer wave of players in recent years, who had their teeth cut on modern HD releases like Grisaia and Live2D marvels like Nekopara rather than on 800x600 slideshows like in olden times, does MLA still hold up in presentation?

let's be real now, if the track wasn't associated with a series that drew elements from Starship Troopers, on top of being featured in the first assault landing attack on the enemy base(very similar to the events on Klendathu) I doubt no one could make the connection.

I don't think making the connection was that hard, but maybe I am a wrong and you are right.
>>
>>14555811
I didn't, I just feel like the concept was obvious enough to not bother bringing it up. I guess the whole story's theme is similar to Starship Troopers in that it's a coming-of-age story about what it means to be a soldier.
>>

you missed the point, track is supposed to invoke the same emotions as Klendathu drop, it is 100% intentional, but it only works given the proper context.

Composition wise it has very little in common with Klendathu drop, other than having a driving grandiose Militaristic tempo, but when given context it will make the audience feel the same exact thing as Klendathu Drop.

But Axmann was taking his orders from Beatrix. Beatrix was basically trying to do what Palpatine did in Star Wars by drawing all the dissident elements together to crush them while using it as an excuse to make herself dictator. Axmann was her Dooku, her man who was responsible for kicking over the whole beehive over. It wasn't a power play, Beatrix was in control of both the Moscow and Berlin factions, and nobody figured it out (well, Gretel did, and was shot for it). What she couldn't take into account was Katia drawing Heim into the revolt in the way she did. She probably expected to fight the NVA eventually, but not that soon.

Don't get me wrong I thought the whole thing was crap and am just waiting around to see if the VN's turn out better but Lise gets more shit than she warrants. The problem with this anime, the big problem, is that they treat anything that's not a fight as some plain scene to get over with. ML has its roots in the romance/eroge genre, and always has, and always will be focused intensely on the characters despite what some TSFsexuals might say. ML rests on the shoulders of it's characters and world building. That Watanabe saw this as a chance to do the mecha based "war epic" he always wanted to do doomed SM from the start.

I keep hearing how Walken's F22 was sabotaged, was there something I missed in reading, or was it something that was expanded on in other materials, like Irma being subject to CIA hypnotic phrases?

Well if we take VNs as canon then Sagiri couldn't manage anywhere near taking him down in TDA when Walken had a Raptor as usual but Sagiri had a Rafale which is a step up from a Shiranui.
>>
So which protagonist pilot is the most skilled? And who is the most skilled pilot in the Alternative setting?
>>
>>14560301
Takeru excluded right? He technically has possibly hundreds of years of subconscious experience.
>>
>>14560301
Yuuya and Takeru are the top two. I'd argue Takeru is the better of them but I don't really know.
>>
>>14560301
>So which protagonist pilot is the most skilled?
It's a toss up between TDA Takeru and Yuuya, though Theo gets an honourable mention for hunting lasers in a MiG-21 and Hibiki gets credit for his 2FAST2FURIOUS football skills

>And who is the most skilled pilot in the Alternative setting?
Probably Mana.
>>
>>14560307
I wouldn't say hundreds of years, or are you assuming he repeated the same routes in Unlimited (and maybe TDA) more than once?
>>
>>14560308
I'd expect Takeru to win hands-down, thanks to what >>14560307
said. Going off of that, all the accumulated experience from so many time-loops would probably make him one of the best pilots in any media, period. Off the top of my head I can't recall any mecha drivers are that experienced...maybe Eldar (from 40k) or space elf guys in general, since they live long enough (assuming they're good enough in the cockpit) to gain hundreds of years of experience, which a human like Takeru could only gain through dying and looping back over and over.
>>
>>14560323
I always assumed that he only looped the same amount of times that there are routes, with TDA continuing from Meiya's normal end
>>
>>14560323
>>14560338
I don't know to me it implied he didn't repeat routes per say but that there were tons of different variants of him so for example some lived through some alternate version of the events of TDA with the other girls being his love interest rather than Meiya.
>>
>>14560338
>Meiya's normal end

What was the normal end for Unlimited? Takeru and his chosen girl both staying, or him convincing her to leave while he fights in what people presume to be a glorious last stand?
>>
>>14560316
Theo managed to dominate a Mig-27 in his beat up, cobbled together TSF. I think he's better then a lot of people give him credit for.
>>
>>14560369
>dominate
aiyyo
>a MiG-27
Not just "a", one that was already heavily damaged from accumulated combat with rebels. Beatrix began the fight with only one arm.
>>
>>14560369
That TSF pilot wasn't really that good. The only reason why she was so BA was because she had a state of the art machine when everyone else had shit. She's pretty much just a trumped up bully/thug, not a hardened soldier like the 666th.
>>
>>14560365
The normal end is them both staying, the good end is his chosen waifu leaving Earth with his child.
>>
>>14560369
He also raked in the most kills in the show, and was a squad lead by the end unlike the other ML protags who were too stupid to be placed into that position.
>>
>>14560400
well when the other more competent candidates for leadership get killed it kinda narrows it down
>>
>>14560400
>unlike the other ML protags who were too stupid to be placed into that position.
Takeru was squadron leader of 201B by the end of Unlimited, too bad they're probably all dead in TDA unless they're all just hiding or something.
>>
>>14560400
Takeru ended up squad leader in Unlimited's endings. And he would've taken the role in Alt if Chizuru wasn't up for it.
>>
>>14560407
>too bad they're probably all dead in TDA unless they're all just hiding or something.
>the climax of TDA is the harem all riding down alongside a HSST piloted by Takahashi down from orbit to gatecrash an arranged marriage ceremony between "Yuuhi" and Ikaruga after having been hiding in space for years as Takeru's hidden trump card
>>
>>14560406
What if Theo was competent though? Is that really that scary of a thought?
>>
>>14560512
Well that explains why he was the most junior of commissioned officers for his entire military service.

Listen bud, he's a good pilot. He's a master at CQC. He isn't really a superb leader.

It's okay to have faults.

>But all of that is just the set-up for the real action. While Gretel is being shown the Stasi files by Axmann, Brehme deals with Commander Schmidt, who is revealed to actually be a KGB operative intending to use East Germany as a bulwark for the Soviet Union. Even though Brehme initially looks like she may have overplayed her hand, Schmidt doesn't know that Brehme and Axmann aren't actually rivals but in cahoots with each other. This was all a smoke screen for Brehme's (not Axmann!) power play to come out on top, and Axmann showing Gretel what he's doing with the Stasi files (blowing them up but saving copies on disk) is an attempt to entice Gretel over to their side. This time, though, Axmann isn't as control of the situation as he thinks, as an open comm link allows Gretel to reveal Axmann's actions to the rebels, who come storming in. As Theodor and the remaining 666 Squadron suit up (figuratively speaking) for a final battle against the Werewolf Battalion as Brehme tortures the imprisoned Irisdina.

>Schmidt's real identity being revealed is a mildly unexpected but still quite reasonable twist, given that KGB operatives historically had many “ins” with the East German government, but Axmann revealing that he was double-crossing everyone and actually working for Brehme wasn't; they seemed so cozy early on that I had a hard time believing that they were actually on opposite sides.

I find it terribly amusing that Alt Shirogane's piloting skill ended up counting for nothing because he ended up in the Susanoo and the girls literally did all the fighting for him.
>>
>>14563090
Well at least it helped out in the earlier battles, specifically in the 20 fort class fight.
>>
>>14563090
Arguably, that skill is the reason why his whole battle harem got so good so fast.
>>
>>14563090
His piloting skill let him survive against an ace on his first mission. It also let him take on 20 Fort-class and whatever accompanied them and win. And he broke through BETA lines twice in Yokohama attack. I do agree that his piloting skill is wasted on the Susano'o, but him being able to stay in contact with 00 Unit is much more important.

But like >>14563194 said. The real strength of his skill is that he was able to raise the overall abilities of the rest of Squad 207 above and beyond what they were ever capable of. If he was able to stick around, he'd be one hell of a Drill Sergeant.
>>
>>14563485
>If he was able to stick around, he'd be one hell of a Drill Sergeant.

So, you know that scene in Alt where Takeru introduces S00mika to the Valkyries? During that scene he keeps having lewd thoughts, and every time both S00mika and the heroine in question blush in embarrassment or something. My question is, are they seeing those too? I mean, S00mika shouldn't be able to by that point, but she also acts flustered.
>>
>>14563549
I think they are, but Yuuko said earlier if they do remember them, they'll just dismiss them as a weird out-of-nowhere thought.

Or it just might've been slightly awkward for Takeru to introduce them to the famous childhood friend, only for him to start spacing out after giving out brief (and sort of embarrassing) descriptions of them to S00mika.
>>
So anyone can explain to me how this coin lottery in Muv-Luv Strike Frontier will work? Will be random and you might not even win anything? To me, the subtitle of ML, "save in the name of true love" is the real secret to why they got better. The girls fight harder for him because they all loved Takeru that much, through unlimited alternative timelines which all fed back to them through him as the causality conductor.

I bet they all got memories of being combat pros in the same way he did. None of that really has anything to do with his piloting skill, unless you mean the CC ability that makes him a good pilot, in which case I would agree.

That said, I want to see him solo a hive in a Takemi 00R loaner.
