***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.
For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!
>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

While RX-78-2 slippers are adorable, you're supposed to use a build from the thread as OP image, goddammit.

Why does it have a wrx. Is gundam a vaper here?

Planning to buy the MG Wing Proto Zero as my first MG since I'm a huge Wingfag and I want to try building a bigger kit now.

Is there anything I should be aware of? Particulary with the stickers, since I intend to apply them and I don't want them to look bad.

For my next build I want to replicate this exact style

the "bandai instruction book perfect model" look
the paint is perfect, the panel lines subtle and tasteful

ive grown sick of shading, weathering and all that
I just want to be able to pull this off
>>
>>14548482
I wish you the best, anon! It takes a bit more effort to make a picture perfect build, but it feels a lot better in the end.

Gundam Marker GM01, it should dispense a drippy fluid rather than being a proper marker.

Those are still useful for other places, but the GM01 is lovely.

It's honestly just a bigger HG just with more detail, more parts, better color separation, and better gimmicks. Nothing really to worry about.

As far as the stickers are concerned, do you have any experience with dry transfers? I'm almost 100% sure that kit comes with those. If you have never applied that type of sticker before the best advice I can give is to be patient and thorough. Once you have cut the sicker out with your exacto blade and have it set in the place you want it, really make sure that you have adequately rubbed the back of it so that you don't end up only putting part of the sticker on and having the other part tear off of it. I like to use a rounded pen cap to apply dry transfers but really anything without sharp edges will do the trick. Also it's a good idea to slowly remove the plastic the from the dry transfer you're applying so that if you notice that it's not fully transferred and starting to rip/already ripped a little bit, you can just press it back down and rub on it more so that it remains intact.

Proto Zero is a badass kit, have fun with the build

I did the exact thing today, looking for tamiya because I need paint like right now, except I found a giant pile of G-unit kits and bought pic related for 10 bucks.
>>
So today I was killing time at the hobby shop near my doctors office because I had some time to kill before my appointment. Turns out they had a pretty decent gunpla collection for really reasonable prices which was fucking awesome. I ended up getting the HG V2AB on a whim. It looks like it will be a fun build but when looking at the runners I noticed that the "gold" pieces weren't plated but instead are that sort of yellow metallic color. I'm planning on using some matte topcoat on the kit so I tried googling how the matte will look on the gold pieces but couldn't really find anything. Does anyone have any experience or even better a picture of that type of plastic after the matte topcoat has been applied?
>>
>>14548776

Tonighted I decided that before I go all out with painting I should do a quick test of the colors I wanted to try and the new paint for the frame on a crappy test kit first

The colorscheme is ripped from the Frame Arms (the non-FAG one) Gourai color guide, but slightly tweaked for a little more brown and with tamiya instead of mr.color. the frame was done with Alclad Magnesium. I basically speed painted it all within like an hour to an hour and a half using lacquer thinner, gave it an hour to dry, and then threw on a quick flat coat.

Overall I'm glad I tested it. For the most part I like it, but I need to use less white for the highlight as it faded the color more than I wanted, especially on the black-brown. The magnesium worked well though and has a nice dull metallic sheen.

I think this is going to look great on my graze.
>>
>>14548922
That's not the point, I'm trying to repair one of my current 5 grazes and only one comes with spare parts for normal types.
>>
>>14548884
This reminds me, I eventually want to get a 00 unit and trans-am it. Going off of this, the grey should be metalic purple, the blue should be metallic red, and the white should be a rose-color?
>>
>>14548884
>Celestial Sphere ruins things again.

Goddamn it. Not everything needs trans-am
>>
>>14548907
Note the text. "Modelled by Kijima Wilfrid". It's Wilfrid doing an homage I guess.

If it were just Char/Amazing Zaku colors they wouldn't have the red wash over the gray parts. But then again, the red Trans-Am is basically a layer of Char colors for the 3x faster anyway, so... kinda comes out a dual reference.
>>
>>14548759
Those getting a reprint is killing me. Every time I go to get some kind of supplies I keep ending up with one. Can't complain too much though. They're good for practicing stuff on, much like GMs are.

Totally new to /m/!

I'm just now getting into Gundam. So far I've only watched 8th MS Team. Really enjoyed it. Liked the setting and characters. Reminded me a bit of Metal Slug

How does it compare to the rest of the franchise? What should I move onto next?

Thinking about getting into the models too. Is there a good Gouf Custom I should pick up? I don't really know how all the terminology and stuff works yet

Get the HGUC Gouf Custom. It's like $18 on Amazon. The guide in the OP is your bible, read it as many times as you need to. Next series you should probably watch should be 0079, which reminded me a bit of Megaman. That'll take you through the One Year War and give you the setup for War in the Pocket, Stardust Memory, and Zeta.

HG is fine, there's also an MG, but it's very old and kind of bleh.

Check dalong.net for model kit information.
If you're looking for a Gouf Custom I'd suggest the HG as opposed to the MG

Next series should be Mobile Suit Gundam if following production order. I'd suggest the series as opposed to the movies for sheer volume of material, character development, fights, etc.
>>
>>14549113
Model looks cool but your camera is shit.
>>
>>14549113
Looks pretty good, particularly considering its a first time job. Do you normally do scale models?

While the weathering is otherwise fairly tasteful, you really shouldn't have every corner have the paint scraped off from head to toe. It's an 18 metre tall machine, it's not going to have consistent and heavy wear on every part of its arms or legs.
>>
>>14548980
My point is buy another one so you can fix your normie graze. plus you will get additional awesome graze as a bonus. it's two birds in one stone.

Get a custom and revive gouf then snap the former's parts to the latter one..

So, I just finished my PG zaku a few hours ago, and im thinking about making a diorama hangar for it to sit in, complete with people running around and cables and shit.

My problem is, ive never done a diorama before. What do most people make their steel frames and docks and shit out of (or better yet, where do people buy them & what are they called) and what would you guys recommend for people. I was thinking those old WW2 diorama figures or old warhammer figures I have laying around. HLJ has a ton of the small LED lights that would be perfect for a hanger, but its the rest im having trouble with.

Pic related. Not the level I want to achive, but gives you a visual idea of the parts im asking about.
>>
>>14549744
this >>14549770
isn't me but maybe I just like UC's big legs and got really tired of building SEED MG kits but the whole process of building it was not interesting

it didn't look very good either standing still and when I tried to pose it the fragile fucking hand could not hold buster rifles to save its life
I ended up leaving the buster rifles out and just have beam saber to pose
>>
>>14549796
>the fragile fucking hand could not hold buster rifles to save its life

That sounds like a huge deal. Kits that can't even hold their own gun are the saddest thing.
>>
>>14549815
I got it when it first came out and if I remember correctly it still had those shitty HG like hands where you clip two parts together

also if you fondle it around for a bit it'll hold it, just not like the box art atleast for me

if you really like the kit just go ahead
>>
>>14549792
Not speaking from experience but most of that hangar you posted can just be made from overlaying plaplate or otherwise just combining rectangles together and painting. Alternatively you can go buy pic related which is a premade, modular hangar from kotobukiya (or third party chinese manufacturers caled Mechanical Chain Bases). Though they are meant for 1/144, you can link them together to make larger hangars.
>>
>>14549643
Feel like im looking in the wrong places but I cant find anywhere for replacement runners for this kit and Bluefin doesn't ship to UK

I dunno if I should try my hand at casting a resin copy, never done anything like it before
>>
>>14549838
Looks like a majority of the Mechanical Chain Bases were discontinued and the only place im finding em is amazon, but because its discontinued, the price has skyrocketed from 10$ to the average of 90 per
>>
>>14549884

I don't know anything about how the UK does gunpla, but you could try finding out who distributes gunpla in the UK and try calling/e-mailing them to see if they can help. Maybe your local hobby store knows.

Doesn't Richigo own a hobby store in the UK or something? He could probably provide more information.
>>
>>14549897
The UK doesn't have a proper gunpla distributor, only some stores that import stuff in themselves.

The anon may be out of luck getting a spare part.
>>

There's a Revive Gouf which is new. Came out around the same time as that Zaku. It should be easy to mix and match. Gunpla isn't Lego but you can make anything work with enough effort.

The Unicorn has so much white you should panel line it with grey only. And you can do that with a mechanical pencil.

A 0.3 one. Pentel GraphGear 500, because I'm a cheap shitter. 0.2 or 0.3 is recommended. I've panel lined with up to 0.5 before as well. It's doable.

>Well, we painted with glossy colors and just wanted to lock that in with a gloss coat.
So, just lock it in with the gloss coat then. You don't need a matte topcoat unless you want your model to diffuse light.

Mattes are common because they tend to make plastic parts look more like actual metal components, but gloss coats are common on metallic paints and hotrod suits like Sinanju and Sazabi.
>>

Clear coat: a transparent or partially transparent coat of paint
Dull/Matte coat: a clear coat that diffuses light and gives a matte finish
Gloss coat: a transparent clear coat that gives a glossy finish

If you want a transforming model Bandai is the only game in town.
If you want static models Hasegawa does them, if you want a toy like Arcadia or chogokin dx then ask toy
>>
>>14553185
Not really.

You can enjoy the model without liking where it's from. IBO gets this a lot.

Although, every now and then, you get something that's a pain no matter what you do. G-Reco gets this a lot.

What's considered the best master grade.
I just finished my first PG, and I loved it, but I dont exactly have the funds for a second PG right away. I was looking at a few, but im not sure which ones are worth the cash. One of the things I absolutely loved about the PG was the inner frame, and ive heard a lot of the MG have them as well, but very few tell me if it has it.

One of the ones I was looking at was the MG Sazabi Ver. Ka (but again, not sure if it has the frame) or if theres just one thats simply best

Please no MSA-0011 Ex-S. Im not a fan of its final look
>>
>>14554989

If you just want to look at inner frames go look at the recent HGs like Origin Zaku or the IBO kits. Those have inner frames/near-complete inner frames in 1/144 and it's pretty amazing.

Alternatively, there are things like RG Destiny, RG Red Astray, that have more surface detail than the MGs/PG.

There is no "best" MG. There are several very cool ones. The 1/100 IBO line and every RE1/100 except the Nightingale are cool too.

I mean if all you want is to build an inner frame to tide you over while you save up for another 150 dollar kit, get an IBO HG or 1/100 since they're like 10-25 dollars and have a full inner frame.
>>
>>14555003
I hate the IBO line because after building 2 of them, And looking at the rest, I feel their 95% frame (with stilettos) and nothing else. And I dont really like the 144 lines because I like mine bigger. Its a personal thing.
>>
>>14554989
I'd say the best MGs in terms of bang for buck, and being the standard for level of details/gimmick is the Zaku II 2.0. Otherwise 'best' is personal.

Every MG has an inner frame. The quality of inner frame may vary, so some have a lot of detail while others do not, but they all have one. If you're curious about what it looks like, you can check dalong.net. Pic related is the Sazabi ver. Ka.
There is also the RG, which all have inner frames as well.

Camera's fine dude

As for the nubs, a good pair of nippers, sandpaper/file and some patience will do wonders. I'm a bit of a goddamn psycho and use A saw-sharpening file I bought at a hardware store but that thing makes quick work of nubs and leaves a smooth surface to buff with finer grade sandpaper. Aside from that, just needs panel lines and it would look fine.

Is the HG Gundam G-Self recommendable?
>>
>>14556176

No, not for a beginner.
>>
>>14556182
alright, thank you
shame I quite like the design
maybe when I get better
>>
>>14556189

Should probably explain.

First off the kit is quite sticker-heavy, and some of those stickers are kind of fragile(all the blue ones), and one of the stickers looks ugly no matter how good you are at applying stickers(the one on the head).

Now, the head is actually engineered in a way that painting it is not as hard as it could be. But you still have to paint it. So if you're just putting it together, it will never look as good as can be.

Even if you're somehow Jesus at applying stickers, like the gun and the shoulder vents don't have any stickers at all, so you MUST paint at least these to be anime-accurate.

Filing down the horns to a point on the G-Self is harder than sanding down V-fin nubs on other gunpla. Not much harder, but a little bit trickier.

Finally the armor of the kit hinders maneuverability, so if you want to get good poses out of it, you have to do some light filework on the parts of the armor near the joints. Again, not too difficult, but you need some technique built up to do it.

If you like the design that much, I would say just buy the Damashi, which you can get used for around 25 dollars, and then put off the G-Self until you're at least proficient in things like filing and masking.

Man, carving the mouth vents on a 1/144 faceplate from scratch is... hellish. The spacing required and the tight angle at the tips...

Especially if you do the vents in the more modern way (tips just barely clear the front angle's corners and the vents are spaced less than 1mm apart from each other)

Any of you guys having this problem?

What if I replace the knee and elbow joints with the articulated joints of the Ballden Arm Arms option kit, which are double-jointed from the get-go?

No, no. The joints are perfectly fine. The armor blocks them from achieving the full range of motion they are already capable of. You have to file away the armor from the joint.

Problem is that they have to job in order to make the Zeon suits look threatening, so it's more impressive when the heroes manage to defeat them. See the Nemos in Zeta as well; they die constantly, except for when Katz takes one out for a spin. And he's anything but an ace.

Towards the end of the OYW though they got to have more personal action because White Base was focused on invading A Baoa Qu, and Amuro was largely preoccupied with Char.

So, when thinning acrylic paints
is there a reason one MUST use thinner (tamiya brand, or otherwise) as opposed to just adding water?
>>
>>14557526
I think I'll stick to markers.
>>
>>14557619
different paint compositions mean you can't guarantee that water will thin every kind of acrylic paint well. tamiya acrylics, for instance, have the paint suspended in a lacquer solution, so as a consequence will turn to muck if mixed with testors' acrylics or vallejo's, and requires different thinning agents.

it's generally recommended you use the thinner made for the paint you desire, but you can also use mr. leveling thinner with tamiya paints because of their composition, and arguably works better than using x-20a.
>>
>>14557649
I mainly ask because my hobby shop had plenty of model paints and craft paints, but I actually didn't find anything that resembled thinner.
They even carried tamiya brand items, so I was kind of confused.
>>
>>14557619
tamiya acrylic paint is totally water soluble. you dont need their expensive thinner it wont make any difference.

>>14557649
dunno what this guy is talking about but i dont see why you would mix various brands of paint
>>
>>14557662
I'm just wondering cuz a recent guide I read seemed to preach absolutely needing tamiya brand thinner because just plain water won't do anything for it.
>>
>>14557672
Not that you should use water when thinning tamiya anyway, if you're airbrushing.

Unless you're >hand painting of course.

How well it handles with water, I don't exactly remember. Maybe if I have time I'll test it out.

as long as you dont let the paint dry in the airbrush, spraying water through it will be enough to clean it. ive been using only water and tamiya paint for a long time. i usually pour my paint in a cup and add a few drops of water, mix and then spray.

its just too expensive to buy enough of this stuff

Don't know if I'm too late but as much as I love this kit there are a some problems.

1. Weight issues with the wings, very hard to get a nice standing pose without it tipping over.
2. Rifle is way too heavy, it can't hold it. I had to blu-tac it to the arm so it didn't tip over as well as blu-tacing the actual hand so it didnt fall off while holding the rifle. It can hold it fine however if you have one half in each arm, but it will be tough balancing it with the wings.
3. The actual stand for the kit is too light and will fall over. I put it in the opposite way so that the weight stays central but then the posing of it sucks.

But to be honest the kit is very nice, mine was the OP from a few threads back. It was my first kit ever and I built it with scissors (don't kill me) and am very tempted to get another one and custom it.
>>
>>14557619
Thinning tamiya paints is probably one of the easiest things if you use this trick:

When you open a fresh bottle, about half a cm down there is a small lip. Add thinner up until this lip and then just close and shake. The entire bottle is then ready to spray straight through the airbrush.

I prefer using the tamiya thinner, I buy the 250ml and it lasts a while

If you want to save on thinner buy Vallejo or Italeri paints depending on where you are and just thin with water in a little medicine cup until happy. I've been doing this with Italeri and it sprays very nicely.
>>
>>14557723
Also btw I wouldn't recommend the metals, they don't look like metal and more like glitter but to each his own.
