WHY THE FUCK IS THIS THING SO POPULAR?

It's the dumbest, most boring, most inept spaceship design I've ever seen in media. How the fuck does this thing even lift off the ground?

Why is it a dumb space saucer with points? Why is there a weird protruding tubular part on the side?
>>
>>14548423
Thrust and suspension of disbelief

Why are X-wings and B-wings shaped like that? Why are Tie Fighters shaped like that?
>>
>>14548437
Even taking away the realism angle I really dislike the Falcon's design. It just looks so fucking odd and not even in a cool or interesting way like a Tie or Xwing.

I cant believe it got so far just by virtue of being the main ship in the marketing material.
>>
>>14548444

That's the point. It's supposed to look like a stupid looking lame piece of garbage so nobody pays it any mind because it's a ship they smuggle illegal stuff in. The internals however are tricked out so it's one of the fastest ships in the story and much better than it appears to be.
>>
>>14548437
why not? its not like they need to take aerodynamics into account when in space

It's the space equivalent of a tugboat
>>
After hearing the name "Millennium Falcon" you'd expect something more graceful looking, that's probably the intended anticipation of the viewer, but lo and behold it's a cobbled together mess held together by duct tape and Han Solo's prayers.
Luke and Lea both weren't shy about calling out how ugly it is when they first saw it.
It doesn't help that it has malfunctions during escape scenes.
>>
Same reason.
>>
I'm very disappointed that it never fired a giant laser beam out of those front two prongs it has

I think this means I've watched too much anime
>>
>>14548501
While not a giant laser, it does have a launcher in the "mouth" part of its front. You see it fire in ep. six when Billy Dee Williams blows up the Death Star II core.

Repulsorlifts, cargo mandibles, cockpit.

That... makes a decent amount of sense.

>>14548423

It's a really cool ship.

HOWEVER

everyone, including the writer forgot it's a piece of shit. It's very fast, but aside from that it breaks down a lot. It shouldn't have re-appeared in jedi and other films.
>>
>>14549276
I thought it's a piece of shit because they liked it so much they kept making non-standard patch repair jobs just to be able to keep using it
>>
>>14548423
The Falcon is cool. Deal with it.
>>
>>
>>
>>14549322
Nope, the Falcon is part of a mass produced freighter class ship and it was literally a great ship with the Falcon itself constantly breaking down and shit for literally no discernable reason.
>>
>>14548423
>How the fuck does this thing even lift off the ground?
Repulsor lifts.
You asked how it lifts off the ground, you didn't ask how the thing that lifts off the ground works.
>>
>>14548423

Same way Star Wars as a whole is dumb and crazy popular.
>>
>>14548423
YT-1300 is shit.
YT-2000 is great.
>>
>>14548423
Sorosuub shill plz
>>
>>14551431

It only breaks down in Empire, and that's just for plot conveience reasons because otherwise there would be no second half of the film if Han and Leia could just lightspeed away to safety like the rest of the fleet.

In New Hope and Jedi it works perfectly. And only breaks down in TFA just long enough for them to meet up with Han and then it works for the rest of the film.
>>
>>14552291
I feel like it stops breaking down in later movies because Han actually has the money to do regular maintenance on it opposed to just slapping some duct tape on a coolant pipe and hoping it works.
>>
The falcon is far from favourite ship but personally I've a thing for shitbox vehicles secretly kitted out to be good at something.
>>
>>
>>14554407
>>
>>14548461
It looks like it oughta be a tug ship or something, so if it never is actually doing that I can see it being ungodly fast.

I'm so glad Lucas saw Space 1999 on tv and changed the design
>>
>>14548985

I really like the design of Padme's ships, probably more than the Falcon, though I was never a big fan of its design. They had next to no screen time though and had very little to do compared to the Falcon. They were just ships, where the Falcon was treated as a base and a home as well as a ship. It had a more interesting interior too, since it had that notChess! Game and smuggling holes and what not.
>>
>>14554746
Naboo Starfighter and the nubian Yacht are great ships. They really did a good job on Episode 1 ships. I even thought the PS2 game was great.

I liked the Naboo fighter till I realized its just the X-wing fighter flying backwards.
>>
>>14554807
More of a z-95 headhunter flying backwards, but I can see it.
>>
>>14554358

It works flawlessly in the first movie too.

It's only Empire where it randomly has problems and keeps breaking down, again because otherwise Han and Leia would never be captured by Vader, Luke could finish his training with Yoda in peace, and the entire Cloud City dramatic fight and reveals never would have happened.

And then it breaks down only once in Force Awakens so Rey and Finn have to meet up with Han instead of flying straight the Resistance base and Han staying out of the plot.
>>
>>14551431
The given reason was pretty much because it had cobbled together computer systems and overly powerful military grade hardware throughout that required more maintenance and Fonz jukeboxing to keep it all in running order.

Not a cruise liner.

Lucas's inspiration for the Falcon was a hamburger.

>>

Well, it is a souped-up transport for a gun runner and drug mule.
>>
>>14559143

Was it? I heard the Blockade Runner was the original design for the Millennium Falcon but had to be changed last minute for some reason I can't recall, so ILM came up with a last minute design to replace it.
>>
>>14559143
The story that George Lucas based the Falcon on a hamburger has been debunked by the designer of the Millenium Falcon, joe Johnston, in this video

https://youtu.be/LF5B1Y7rU-I

George left the design up to Johnston, said it could be a flying saucer, and Johnston added more details.

I think Han Solo is one of the worst character archetypes in media. He's so easy to self-insert to:

>scruffy criminal but such a rebel XD
>ugly ship but it's the fastest in the universe
>bitches love him even though he's a loser
>goes in half cocked but always gets out somehow

I was happy when he died in TFA so Harrison Ford could do something better.
>>
>>14559367

You think it'd be harder to romanticize a drug mule gun-running military deserter.

Well done, Harrison Ford,

It's from a galactic civilization that has been around for millions of years with supposedly something like seven billion inhabited planets.
There's probably quite a few civilian spaceship manufacturers around.

Falcon is so iconic a YT frigate that the sight of another of the same model would confuse casual viewers.

Kinda like how every Blockade Runner is the Tantive IV.

Several YT1300s were used to confuse casual stormtroopers and the occasional Imperial Admiral or/and Rebel/New Republic VIPs at times in the EU. Of course, all retconned now, other than the fact that a YT1300 could apparently get stuck on some planet for years without people knowing it was the Falcon.

This is a Corellian YT-1300 freighter. I don't know where this ship came from, but it is -not- within the set parameters for a civilian transport. It has been illegally modified with two quad-guns, one mounted cannon, several escape pods, a completely new sublight engine, several new stealth & communications jamming additions, and a large secret cargo area. Not the prettiest ship, but an excellent choice...If you're a smuggler.

Someone tell me again how the f***k the Imperial Shuttle got out of that docking bay without running over the other ships in front if it's fin already touches the ceiling?
Also, a f***king shuttle is bigger than a freighter? Why don't they make a yacht that's bigger than a Star Destroyer then, yuk!

>It just looks so fucking odd and not even in a cool or interesting way like a Tie or Xwing
It's meant to look like an appliance, much used and tinkered with more than cleaned and scrubbed.
That was the cool thing about SW, robots, laser guns, aliens and spaceships were all just part of everyday life with rust and scabs and dirt on them. It was also kind of an answer to 2001, with the minutes of watching one ship dock at a space station, Lucas knew that docking would be like reverse parking an SUV, not part of the story and not worth much time.
>>
>>14561740
>Someone tell me again how the f***k the Imperial Shuttle got out of that docking bay without running over the other ships in front if it's fin already touches the ceiling?

Very carefully. It doesn't quite reach the ceiling, but it could certainly bump into that crane on the left side. I imagine the other craft had to get towed aside so the shuttle could safely lift its landing gear and float on out. The bigass wings make it seem larger than it really is, though it doesn't help that it was meant more for spacious imperial hangers and landing pads, not cramped Mon Cal hangers.
