It's the kind of thing that will never be made again.

Literally just hurling money at a bunch of 20somethings and telling them they can animate anything they want, so long as it's about robots. Makes me shed a tear for days long gone.

Japan Animator Expo was something similar.

Granted everyone only remembers ME!ME!ME! and the Eva fanwank ones, but there was some solid animation and ideas in there. And there was some nice nods to /m/ stuff in it too, like Gridman and Daicon IV.

IIRC Umetsu took those jobs because what he wanted was too ambitious/no longer the "in" thing/there were too many strings attached, so he was having trouble getting funding. Then porno makers offered him as much money as he needed and total creative freedom as long as there was sex in there somewhere.

He is a great man.

Koji Morimoto's Franken's Gears was my favorite one since it was a fantastic example of how to make the most out of an extremely simple concept

The one by the Fantastic Children/Catnapped/Tree of Palme/etc director that was basically Fantasia's Night on Bald Mountain with robots was good

The shoujo love story one probably gets a lot of hate but I had fun with it

Cloud can suck it; not even a bad idea, and the animation was good when it was present, but it was executed in a shitty boring "muh minimalism" way hoping it could get away with being boring because it's "artsy"

Oh and Kitakubo's short >>14536361 was disappointing because I expected it to be amazing given the concept and director but it was just ok and pretty forgettable. It didn't have the magic touch that Golden Boy and the Jojo OVAs at their best had.

I like Starlight Angel. The music is enjoyable, the boy who cheats on her is A CHAR (or Char's Counterattack era Char himself), and the robot park employee guy is Char's Counterattack era Amuro.

I don't want to say I didn't care for it as some 'ANIME CRITIC' statement; honestly it's been half a decade since I watched Robot Carnival. I may change my mind if I rewatch it now.

Oh and I forgot to mention the Otomo bits were really fucking good and the ending with the "THE END" letters and the fucking goat flailing about next to it made me laugh out loud

The Meiji-era robot short is one of the strongest in Robot Carnival because of the detail in the design of the robots both inside and out, the concept is clever and so is how it's visually executed, and it's paced perfectly for its length. You're saying it doesn't hold up because you're comparing it to two OVAS that are like 15 times as long.

Robot Carnival on the whole is great, the only weak short being Cloud because Cloud is a boring piece of shit.

Nightmare > OP/ED > Tale of Two Robots > Presence > Starlight Angel > Franken's Gears > Deprive > Cloud

Starlight Angel and Deprive have shallow them/concept, but their animation and art is pretty good.

You are unjust to Cloud IMHO, different genre completely. I would put it above those, it is pretty good.
