Collectively, how many kills do you think the Gundam, Gundam Mk. II, Zeta Gundam, Psyco Gundam, Psyco Gundam Mk. II, ZZ Gundam, and Nu Gundam have to their names? Like fucking a million right? We never see any Gundams that roll out and get killed on their first battle, and people would probably never hear about it if that happened anyway. These guys have been through three wars and every time there's been at least one Gundam killing a million people. If I was in a war, and I had been in or at least heard about those last wars, and a Gundam showed up I'd be like, "Oh fuck! Like a million people are going to die! Abandon everything!"

Truth be told, it's not as much of an advancement as people make it out to be. Mobile suits already had dozens of sensors around the body constantly gathering environmental data. Since mobile suit cameras don't actually display what they see and instead a picture perfect 3D generated image of it, Federal Forces engineers just decided that there's no reason the body sensors can't do the same thing as the head cameras, and reworked them as such.

So instead or compiling a recreated image for three screens, the computer now compiles an image for a 360 degree bubble monitor.

The GM II had a regular three screen monitor before the conversion to the panoramic one. The transition was easy once they just started upgrading the sensor array.

To be fair, the Federation was getting it's ass sorely kicked by Zeon up until the Gundam was first fielded, they had the Mobile Suit advantage and were turning the tide of the whole war.

It was so shocking to see the Gundam because of the impact it had on the whole war, the Zeon were astounded that a single machine could have such an impact, which created fear and it's own mythology, a massive psychological impact.

That is a seriously lame plot device to put in laplace's box.

And Bright Nos is totally behaving out of character if you ask me, but I guess the problems with the Titans might have made him more cynical about following orders.
