This honestly baffles me whenever I see it. Almost his entire character is just his backstory and after his episode he gets like 3 more lines all season. He's basically an empty character and he was even more naturally talented and without character flaws than Sekai was.

Based on the way Gyanko is hanging onto Sekai in the PV for the OVA he didn't even get the Gyanko in the end.

Unlike Sekai she was a fan of Gundam at least. I understand having somebody be new to Gundam to shout exposition and explanations at, but Fumina had a pretty coo suit with the GM Cardigan and was a fangirl, she could have been like Sei, who was more well lied than Sekai. But they figured she's a girl so lets delegate her to merely a support role with a cute SD gundam. I don't know if she would have been able to save Try, but it would have been a step up.

There was hints of her dead ending herself with support builds that could have been expanded into her forcing herself into that role via peer pressures and expectations as a woman, which could have been her conflict with Gyanko seeing it instantly. And considering Star winning's debut I would say that she does better with overpowering opponents with aggressive assaults and bombardments. Not something most places like seeing in a girls behavior. It's also a common role heroines receive in Gundam.
One possibility, but hindsight is useless. Also, the franchise would never have a female lead anywhere like they would a male lead out of fear of alienating the male audience or scaring them away with cooties and girl issues like overcoming the odds and rising to the top. Or, having a girl becoming less hyper-focused on a boy, and focusing more on what she wants. That's pretty risky for a traditionally boy's-cartoon, and extremely jarring to the audience, in theory.

For validity, please look at why Cartoon Network canceled Young Justice because girls wanted to buy toys of the female character, which wasn't the market that they wanted and canceled the show compared to how My Little Pony unintentionally got a male audience and stayed on the air.

I think this is more of an issue where they didnt expect the success of Build Fighters and rushed production of a second season. No time to sit down and analyze what the fans enjoyed and they rushed what corporate sponsors want to sell.

I think a similar situation happened to SEED Destiny, rushed production just makes problems more apparent and alot worse.
