To be fair, the only demographic excited for Resurgence on Japan is the aging fanbase, the rest of Japan doesn't give a shit. Meanwhile the rebuilds were huge hits and arguably Anno would never be hired to make a Godzilla movie if it wasn't for the rebuilds so at this point any publicity is good publicity

I concur actually — it has a little more than the average Nineties cheesiness, though it’s far less egregious than other Emmerich films — but I still hate the film.

Is this hypocritical? Not in the slightest. When you make something that’s part of an established franchise, your job is not only to make a good instalment, but something that’s true to that franchise’s spirit.

Now what that spirit IS, exactly, may be debatable, but it’s my opinion that Emmerich utterly missed the mark. Godzilla is supposed to be a nigh-indestructible, almost divine force of nature, not just a large, dangerous monster. There’s a lot of variation possible within that as the Japanese films have shown, but I think that Emmerich’s film doesn’t fall remotely within that range.
