Your criteria of better toys may not be the same as them. I now see toys I loved as a child and admit they had lots of flaws, which I didn't care about back then.

While I agree the the Gaoranger one is waaaay better(even though they all can technically move the same since few can move more than their arms), kids may not think so. If Bandai survived this long, I'm pretty sure they know a thing or two about what kids want.

So we had our second session of my Power Rangers campaign. It pretty much went off the rails a half hour in, and the following takes place over the course of 6 hours.

So last time the team got recruited by Olympian Dynamics and got rushed out to deal with a hostage situation. They beat the monsters and saved the hostages, who were scientists tasked with taking the morpher tech and implanting it in someone like a pacemaker. They stuff the bodies of the boss monsters into their Metaspace inventory (it's the Morphing Grid, which is a pocket dimension) and head back to base.

When they get there, they confront the guy who makes their tech (Will) about the morpher they found in the body of one of the bosses. Will crit fails 2 rolls - one to keep his composure and one to lie - and freaks out, telling them that a while ago he'd lost a bunch of his prototypes. The company had compensated him for the loss, and he had tried to chalk it up to a massive senior moment, but he'd always suspected foul play deep down.

Robert Neil, the liaison, returns from allowing the scientists to lie down in hastily-arranged quarters, and offers the team their already-arranged quarters so they can bed down for the night and wake up fresh for tomorrow's duties.

Up to this point, everything had gone according to one of my plans. I had planned on a couple different things for them to do the following day.

The team decides "fuck that" and decides to go get plastered, and I resign myself to flying by the seat of my pants for the next few hours.

They get a jeep from the motor pool, and head out. First they go to a gas station/convenience store. Clyde the robot gets a jug of motor oil and a bag of ice; Marvin mistakes a cranberry cocktail for an actual cocktail; Uncle Sam gets a case of Natty Light; Dillon Dax, who is underage but has a fake ID, gets an iced coffee.

From there, they head to a barn-turned-club, called Doubleday. Dillon very nearly gets kicked out for being underage, but the team convinces the bouncer to let him as their DD. Sam beelines to the restroom to piss a gallon (he did polish off the entire case himself), Dillon flirts with a girl carrying around a tray of shots, and Clyde hijacks the DJ booth to turn this club up to 11. Marvin the middle-aged overweight balding programmer, meanwhile, goes straight onto the dance floor and finds a girl in a white and purple dress to dance with. He manages to make a couple social rolls (thanks to Clyde playing her favorite song) and she leads him to a back room behind the DJ booth. She introduces herself as Atalanta. The players immediately start freaking out OOC because they can sense what's coming.

Atalanta leads Marvin into a VIP section, and they have a little conversation - she asks him about his neat watch, is it like a Samsung? Marvin decides to show off for the lady, and morphs.

Atalanta gets real close, leans in, and whispers "alright, you showed me yours...I'll show you mine." She reaches into her cleavage and pulls out a purple pendant in the shape of a panther's head, and morphs into a more conventional PR outfit in white and purple (as opposed to the more tacticool suits the team has). She mentions that her friends should be arriving with his friends any moment now.

Meanwhile, a couple of women - a short Asian girl and a tall, redheaded, noticeably older Irish woman sidle up to Dax and Sam, now at the bar. They buy them shots, but Sam is incoherent and Dax refuses. The ladies put the pressure on, and just as it seems like Dax might give in, he succeeds on a roll to spot the shots girl behind him in the mirror behind the bar. She's holding a loaded syringe, which she quickly hides behind her back. The ladies shoot her a glare, and she walks away nervously. Dax and Sam are now alerted to trouble, and immediately morph.

Atalanta, sensing a kindred spirit in Marvin, reveals her master plan of world domination (of course) to him. Marvin refuses, and after she takes a swing at him, he disarms himself as a show of trust and talks her down. She relents, and wants to see how this plays out. They exist the VIP room and head back out through the club.

Meanwhile, the Asian in white and pink and the Irish in white and gold have forced Sam and Dax outside, where they morph and fight, their suits once again matching their party dresses. They fight using energy-enhanced claws on their gloves, and they pack a mean punch. Clyde sees this going on, and manages to pull off a double crit by getting the drop on Pink from behind then rolling a nat 20 for his attack, nearly reducing her to half-health in the first hit. Gold is a sneaky snake and is doing stealthy shit too, but Pink is shot in the back a total of 3 times because of her constant changes of target, and is reduced to 2 HP after she gets shot for the third time and falls off a wall she attempted to scale in a bid to retreat.

At this point, Marvin and Atalanta exit the club, Atalanta crit fails a perception check to notice one of her friends injured on the ground, and Marvin expertly calms the situation down. They strike up a temporary truce while they all talk it out.

On top of the barn, there's a huge exposition dump, courtesy of the girls: Atalanta is Olympian Dynamics' CTO, Robert Neil doesn't even have a son so he lied about him being kidnapped, the two of them have been working together to implant the morphers into human bodies to create an immortal being, and Robert Neil is actually Lord Zedd, massively nerfed and crossed over from the main MMPR universe to start over in this one.

And that's the session.

Why is this shit allowed? Tacticool and Power Rangers are two distinct flavors that shouldn't be fucking mixed. The SWAT upgrades in SPD/Dekaranger tried that, and they looked like ass.

I realize I sound like a total shitlord who's just aggressively asserting his opinion where it isn't needed, and yeah, I really shouldn't. But honestly, Tacticool and Sentai/Power Rangers really shouldn't mix. I'd suggest, when the team gets the requisite mid-season upgrade forms, you spin it as a "Cast-Off" sort of deal like with Kamen Rider Kabuto, where all the tacticool armor acted as a restraining bolt, and their capabilities while morphed increase quite a bit.

I sorta agree with this. Although I like it when it's just hints of tacticool(like the SWAT SPD mode, which I like or Go-Busters) and not overdo it. But they are fundamentally different things, yeah.

Ninjas and sentai are also opposites and all the ninja rangers suits(I mean the main ranger suits, not MMPR3) look great because they aren't really ninja.

Here's what you need to know before going into In Space:
-MMPR and MMAR team were a thing and they fought Lord Zedd. Adam was from this team.
-Zeo was a team and they fought the machine empire
-Turbo was another team which fought Divatox who kidnapped Zordon, and destroyed the power chamber.(IIRC this bit is shown in ep 1). Justin was from this team.
-A guy called Phantom Ranger appeared on Turbo.

As an example, the players have on multiple occasions brought up the idea of Megazords to their superiors. Every time, they get weird looks and are told they've been reading too many comic books. Of course, this is ironic because not only is their "mentor" actually Zedd, but they don't yet know that Will the blue-jumpsuited tech guy is in fact Bill Cranston. I even described his look as "mid-series Breaking Bad" because, you know, Brian Cranston and all that, you know the lowdown. They may never know.

This group is composed of people from my DnD group who wanted to keep playing through the summer (the DM was overseas for seminary and one of our players who's not in my campaign is getting married in a week). I'd love to do it, I've had the setup for years, but time is an issue. I think the third session is going to be the last for a while.
The more pressing issue, honestly, is how I feel about putting in all the references and cameos and shit. My homeboard is /tg/, so when people constantly want to shove 40k into everything it just makes me hate 40k that much more. I love JoJo, but even I can see why people come to hate JoJo on /tg/ - it gets shoved into everything, and when you aren't in the know and do not care to be, it's insufferable. If I do the multiverse plot, I won't go full-bore with the whole thing, I'll just do bits and pieces.

The team's suits are like the Tron 2.0 suits, but far less cluttered with lights, kinda bulky.
The femme fatales (femmes fatales? I don't speak French) have suits that look more like Tron Legacy: far more streamlined, form-fitting. These suits are explicitly Better Suits than the ones the PCs have. Their morphers are also completely different - hidden inside pendants instead of big bulky things strapped to your wrist.

Oh yeah, I definitely understand you there. JoJo is a scourge on many a board, including my homeboard, in addition to it's own problems. It's a damn shame when something you actually enjoy is forced on people or wears out it's welcome.

Personally, I think that as long as the references and namedrops are being used to enhance the work instead of overpowering it, it's fine. Which you seem to be doing. Besides, a good campaign, like a good story, should have some background material that isn't immediately apparent to the viewers/players, just to flesh it out.

The toughest enemy in tabletop is the Calendar.

It's like saying "all those plot holes in the movie are taken care of in this companion novel for $24.99". I've been watching the Best Friends LP of Dark Souls 3, and noticed a lot of random references to lore, characters and enemies from previous games. One guy gets all of them because he's played them (and is the one pointing them out), another gets some of them because he's played some of them, a third doesn't get any of them because he's never played any of them. While connected by themes, certain characters and mechanics, and the world itself, Dark Souls seems less like a trilogy and more like a trio of similar but separate entities. You don't need to play DS 1 to "get" DS 3. You just have to play DS 3.
I just don't want to make a reference and have it fall flat because they aren't autistic like we are. Then again, a group composed of /prg/-posters might be worse.

I'm halfway through Carranger and it's clearly not a footage thing like I used to think.

So for my third session I thought I'd ask you guys for suggestions: It's early on in the season, and the Rangers just found out they're actually working for the bad guys, and they're fighting monsters to cover up the results of the bad guys' failed experiments.

Where could I go with this one? What's something you'd like to see in a PR season that would flow naturally from this situation?

2nd session they fought their psycho rangers: a trio of women with cooler suits and more stylish weapons. They wiped the floor with one of them by keeping her off balance with some excellent tactics, got outstealthed and outsmarted by the second, and managed to talk down the leader (who is the villain's general, in PR terms) before a huge exposition dump. The villain is the guy who recruited them in the first place.

It took me a second to realize you meant Jason David Frank and not the character. I mean, Zeo's finale was a pretty decent send-off for the ex-Red, ex-Gold Ranger, but I wonder if keeping him around in some capacity wouldn't have helped the show... the coolest part of the movie was dredging up the old Tommy vs. Jason rivalry. But nah, the first half was pretty rough.

You neglected to mention why tho - Douglas Sloan, the EP who had the most investment into Zeo and its ongoing arcs, left the show due to creative differences with Jonathan Tzachor (of course), who proceeded to misunderstand everything that made PR work for a while until around the halfway points (which were considered the actual season beginnings and endings from a production standpoint), when Chip Lynn took over.

And that Chip Lynn fondly remembers the back half of Turbo as his favorite season to work on. It's obvious why if you rewatch, he gets to have his cake and eat it too - he starts leaning into the silliness of the Carranger footage, but he also gets all the genuinely cool mecha-vs-mecha footage from Carranger that lent itself well to being played straight.
