Not that I dislike Godzilla having his usual roar, but it seems like in the trailers it's not the proper one due to the way the same scene was edited. Something new to go along with his new design would be great.

Anno said around the same amount of time the monster had in Gojira. Hopefully that's adjusted for running time, as Resurgence will be 30 min longer than Gojira.

Now. People can finally stop defending Edwards' creative decisions in G14. Monster Zero gets away with it because it has awesome human characters and much more happening.
>>
>>14523125
man don't bother, 2014 fags keep defending that movie as 'artistic' and paying homage to the original with the abysmally low screentime and when cornered will tell you that it has 'about the same' as most Toho movies
>>
>>14523130
Godzilla's screen time in 2014 is fine, it's the constant blue balling that's the problem.
>>
>>14523130
>>14523136
G14 has one of the shortest amounts of screen time and, besides Final Wars, takes the longest amount of time for Godzilla to actually appear in the movie. Then the film has the audacity to tease until the very end. But even worse, he is an afterthought that could be easily removed from the film itself. And you wonder why people were upset. They may have not made all the connections. But they knew something was wrong.

according to Lebbit he had about 10 min screentime in 2014 and that was counting shit like just his plates gliding above the water etc

Anno is clearly acting in defiance of Edwards for the sheer fact Godzilla is always fully visible and not hidden or obscured or hiding behind buildings or in smoke, you're forced to see him in entirety
>>
I liked how in 2014 they built up his arrival and made it suspenseful, but God dammit the blueballs make it insulting and the suspense is a one time thing. I rewatched 2014 and it's one of those movies that really dip in quality the second go.

We've come a long way since Final Wars. Just go back and watch the trailer for that film.

The feel and look of the new film is so cinematic. Heck, the cinematography rivals G14. And reviews have been positive thus far, so Resurgence might be one of the best entries in years.

>>
>>14523632

It's actually sort of interesting to compare how this looks to G14. Both kinda inhabit the same ballpark but at the same time go in totally different directions. G14 has really slick, almost fantasy-like colors, while this has this weird sort of harsh feel to it, almost like the characters' unease is literally coloring the movie.

I still don't know why glorious Nippon isn't marketing this larger to the burgers. We liked G14, certainly more than PRim or Cloverfield. As long as they made it clear in every trailer "FROM HIS ORIGINAL HOME IN JAPAN" and rubbed that in every moviegoers face, it could be successful. Just make it clear this is from Japan land, and the rest would fall into place.
>tfw me, the old man, my uncle, and some other couple were the only people in the cinema for 2000.

Fampai, Goji is a corpse with a tail bigger than his body. We knew it would be a split as soon as we saw the big man himself.
>>
>>14523676
Hideaki Anno has been polarizing since Neon Genesis Evangelion. Unless it's something obscure, like his live-action stuff, he seems to have been causing sharp divides on everything he has touched since his grim tale of robots, kids, and monsters. Nevertheless, it's almost guaranteed to be interesting and spark endless discussion.
>>
>>14523678
Toho probably isn't marketing Shin Goji because of Godzilla 2000. Goji2k didn't do so well in the box offices here in the states and Toho has been wary of releasing a Godzilla film theatrically ever since.
>>
>>14523678
Maybe they're just cautious, fearing that a large buzz would just attract more of the "looks like a syfy movie lol jap cinema sucks XD" crowd and give the brand as a whole bad publicity, and are instead aiming for a more limited release targeted at fans and the more level-headed folk who would genuinely be interested? G2000 was confusing enough, and I'm sure they want to avoid accidentally torpedoing the new planned American continuity.

I mean, the fact that they're even selling the film to so many areas seems to show that Toho and their distributors have confidence. On the other hand, maybe they're not really planning a huge promotional push, and simply want to profit from minimal incomes from all those foreign markets? Lets face it, this movie has a very limited mass appeal in a world where most plebs can't think outside the boundaries of high-budget murican CGI shitfests, so perhaps a less expansive marketing is actually beneficial, as long as it reaches their intended target audience.

But who knows, maybe they'll shift gears once they see how Japan reacts.
>>
>>14523678
This Godzilla doesn't seem anywhere near as action oriented as the U.S. one was, nor does it have the U.S. military wank that Burgerzilla had.
>>
>>14523710
>Goji2k didn't do so well in the box offices here in the states
it barely got released here, too
I was fortunate to be in a city that had it for a convention the weekend it came out so I got to see it.
>>
>>14523710
Actually, Godzilla 2000 did well enough that the writer of the dub was able to pitch an American made sequel "Godzilla Reborn" to be directed by Joe Dante with the intention of casting Bruce Campbell, Christopher Lee and Leonard Nimoy in various roles. Story would have been Godzilla going to Hawaii (a science conference in Honolulu occurring at the same time) and actually getting KO'd by the military, only for a giant lava bat kaiju named Miba to rise from Mount Kilauea, resulting in the need to get Godzilla back up on his feet to fight it. Toho would have done the special effects.

It got cancelled because Sony executives were getting flipped around and the new guys weren't interested in greenlighting a new Godzilla movies, even one with a small 20 million dollar budget.

He probably jerks it over the military aesthetics, but judging by the honestly sort of paranoid worldview implied by Eva, i doubt he trusts the human race as a whole with something like that. He seems fairly apolitical.

Staple of the far right. Jews are fond of accusing Steele as anti-semitic.

Pessimism towards both government and their people is the nature of right wing thought, why the focus is on preparation and conservation, not the left's inward looking progress towards utopia enabled by a (possibly false) sense of security.

>>14523843
Anno's work, and a Gainax as a whole, is mostly character driven with universal leaning themes but there is still a lot of political content in Gun/Diebuster, Royal Space Force and especially Evangelion. Godzilla itself is a political metaphor and will always pose a choice on its representation of the military and civil services, I don't think Anno would just ignore that.
>>
>>14523909
Is Anno really on the far right? I know he's an older man so he'd tend towards more conservative leaning but is he really more than that?

I wonder how such sentiment might impact the film's appeal in the United States and Asian countries like China and South Korea. Some of Japan's neighbors are still bitter about the treatment they received at the hands of the Japanese during WWII. Guess it depends on how the film handles the matter.
>>
>>14523920
I don't know anything about Anno's political beliefs. The political content always takes such a strong backseat in his work I think it'd be unfair to characterize him based on that rather than whatever he says himself in his interviews. But if I had to guess, I think he leans towards nationalism at the very least based on the way he depicts Japan's foreign politics in NGE, especially Rebuild 2.0
>>
>>14523950
Miyazaki admits Anno is talented but he doesn't approved everything he does. That's why Miya-san never let Anno to touch Nausicaa, no matter how much Anno insisted.
>>
>>14523952
Considering the original Godzilla was conceived by Japan's butthurt for the nukes and the ocupation, it shouldn't be a big deal unless the characters suddenly start praising the emperor and raping Chinese girls
>>
>>14523963

Honestly, this feels more like an eastern collectivism thing rather than a right vs left thing. I mean, a lot of the hallmarks you claim are emblamatic od right wing thought have been present in left wing thinking too. The left has had plenty of its own conspiracy theorists, anti-utopians and pessimists.
>>
>>14523952
>Some of Japan's neighbors are still bitter about the treatment they received at the hands of the Japanese during WWII.
Modern day Chinese nationalism (Taiwanese nationalism is a different story) is largely fueled by government propaganda designed to demonize Japan, same with S. Korea.
The way I see it, Japan is like that one abusive ex that has long since moved on and all but forgotten about them, but they're still obsessed with him despite desperately claiming not to be. They define significant parts of their lives around how shitty their ex was, and is all they rant about when they get a little alcohol in them.

Ishiro Honda doesn't blame explicitly blame anyone though. Not that he could anyway with American occupation and censorship. But even then I doubt he would have. Remember, he criticized Kazuki Omori for Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah.

Gojira was more about the potential for destruction all humans have and the horrors of war/nuclear weapons and reckless ambition.

Somewhat related. An interesting story from Toshio Suzuki:

"When Neon Genesis Evangelion aired in 1995, I was very happy that it was an instant hit. When Hayao saw the Evas, he said, “Those are God Warriors.” I thought so too. Last year, during the Hideaki Anno exhibit at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Modern Art, I wrote that “The origins of Eva are Ultraman and the God Warrior.” We made a special tokusatsu short for the exhibit called “The God Warriors Appears in Tokyo”, in which God Warriors destroy Tokyo.

When I meet Anno, he sometimes tells me that he wants to create a sequel to Nausicaa. According to him, he considers Evangelion a continuation of Nausicaa, done in his own way. It’s amazing how much he was influenced by Nausicaa. Those short three months he spent at our office ended up defining everything about him."

He said in that same announcement that Anno can do whatever the hell he wants, he was too old to care anymore. Anno himself doesn't even want to make a Nausicaa sequel, he just wanted to make a spin-off with Kushana killing people, and that was back in the early 90s. He even said himself in that recent "Anime has 5 years left" Russian interview that he doesn't have any desire to make it anymore.

According to Toshio Suzuki, Miyazaki hired Anno on the spot and supported him early on. Allegedly, Miyazaki was very impressed by Anno's talent. Anno was homeless before joining the Nausicca production team. His life consisted of drawing and working. He lived at work. I'm sure the two grew very close over the years.

Agreed on Sam Raimi. Would fucking love to see his take on Ghidorah.

Oz was a mediocre movie, but one of the things that did stick in my mind was that scene where the full evil Witch of the West slams into the castle square in a fireball and you see her silhouette flickering in the flames before she materializes. Would love to see that applied to a modern take on Ghidorah's "emerging from fire" entrance.

So was Zilla female or a hermaphrodite?
Maybe she got like komodo dragon breeding powers, or it really was able to self-fertilize?
Wasn't it literally a mutated marine iguana?

Just imagine if we got that planned sequel where it fought another monster, I wonder if that would've helped its reputation.
>>
>>14525142

God Sam Raimi is actually kinda a great pic for Godzilla 2. They'll probably give it to the John Roberts guy if Kong does well. They'll want to play it up like he has some control over the "trilogy" of KK, G2, and KKvG.

Raimi would go full Showa and you know it. Alien invaders in 60s mod fashion, wild monster designs with ridiculous weapons, plucky heroes who have no business fending off giant monsters, the whole shebang. He'd do something exactly as kooky as Godzilla vs. Gigan and only halfway make a joke out of it. Sam Raimi lives for that shit.

I would love it. You might love it. Raimi fans might love it. But I don't think the mainstream would love it and I don't think the average Godzilla fan would. Ryuhei Kitramura worships Sam Raimi to the point where he basically started his career with an action movie version of Evil Dead, and look how reactions were to his Godzilla movie.

I know that's a somewhat legitimate concern. But Sony, while still planning to continue their own trilogy, dubbed and gave Godzilla 2000 a pretty decent sized theatrical run. It would be fine if it was the "Toho approach', where most of the time films weren't directly connected to each other, and risk of confusion was low.

Now that LP's Godzilla is becoming a "Franchise", and being connecting with Skull Island, the risk of confusion with another "separate" film being released by the same studio is to high.
Like I said above, in the event that Shin Godzilla is awful, I don't think WB wants to have the movie attached to their name, just in case.

Skull Island might sink the ship first. Besides Edwards' departure, I think part of the reason Godzilla 2 was pushed back was because the series is on unstable grounds. If it doesn't take off, losses are minimized.

Same thing happened with Sony's Godzilla. The original director dropped out and the film kept getting delayed until it was cancelled. Let's not kid ourselves. G14 made money. But it was hardly anything to brag too much about.

That's why I'm hoping SI does well. I've discussed the idea of "What if it fails" on a few boards and the only reaction I get is negative replies and "Here's why you're wrong" type of bullshit.

I just can't see SI doing well unless they brought in something to place people in seats. Kong is a known name like Godzilla, but Kong seems to have the worst end of the stick considering that he should have "Hometown advantage", and all I've seen containing mention of Kong is the GvKK movie and the past films.

I wont lie, Kong as a monster bores the shit out of me, and while PJ's Kong was good in the action aspect, the rest of the film was awful. I'm hoping SI avoids long "on the boat" scenes and sticks more to action orientated plots and scenes.
With Skull Island, I legitimately want to care about Kong as a character and as a monster, something to make it hard for me to choose who to root for in GvsKK in 2020.

Having a Godzilla monster in SI could help slightly like:
>Gorosaurus
>Kumonga(Spider Pit)
>Rodan

Yes, it's on a unstable base, because unlike Marvel, LP/WB have done little to nothing since G14 that would help their "Kaiju Universe".
>No other monster movies besides SI.
>No comic line that could help introduce monsters that wont be featured on screen.
>PR being it's own universe.
>The grounded reality of G14.

My fear is that SI fails and WB/LP decide to cancel GvsKK and replace it with "Godzilla 2", while trying to dust anything involving the "Kaiju universe" they've talked about.

There is Godzilla Awakening. But I heard the less said about it the better. And I don't know. I don't see Skull Island pulling strong numbers. If this year is any indication, people seem to be growing increasingly selective about what they'll watch in theaters. Obviously the quality of the film itself matters. But competition might make a huge difference too.

But if Godzilla/Kong fails to materialize, Legendary now has the live-action Pokémon franchise. Pokémon is literally a billion dollar industry on its on. So attention will probably be shifted to it in the coming months. Their first film will be... Detective Pikachu. Odd choice. But has the potential to pull in families.
>>
>>14526032
So attention will probably be shifted to it in the coming months. Their first film will be... Detective Pikachu. Odd choice. But has the potential to pull in families.

I own and love Godzilla Awakening, but it was handled sloppy in comparison to some "Tie in Comics" done for other franchises. It feels like a Comic that was released as a "Loose backstory" and with the assets of the Movie. It's only purpose that I saw for the book was to flesh out Monarch and expand on the idea that they're kinda the MIB for creatures and Kaiju.

That's the reason it's a "March Release" instead of a "Summer Release", WB knows it would fail, so they're hoping that it can at least do well for a March release.
I mean there is a reason why people keep flocking back to theaters for the Transformers films, It's Dumb and thoughtless action.
Gareth tried making LP's Godzilla "Artsy" and look how that turned out.

Oh Legendary most likely doesn't even give a shit about most of their products and IPs since the Pokemon announcement, though I see that they're playing safe. They chose Detective Pikachu as the "live action Pokemon Movie" so that in the event things look bad, it's not the "Actual" Live action Pokemon movie, and they can still "Redeem" themselves and continue playing safe.

Honestly I can expect LP branching into a Pixar/Dreamworks style animation group.

I don't think that anyone is contesting that Megaguirus was the worst Millennium movie, but it's not like they knew that ahead of time. If Godzilla 2000 had been surprisingly successful in the US, then why not just go, "Yeah, sure, we'll take the next one, too." What harm could it have really done?
>>
>>14526579
Japanese films are usually released in Japan before being brought to the United States. After seeing that audiences didn't respond well to it there, they probably didn't think it was a good idea to release it theatrically here. Plus, Sony figured Godzilla 2000 only did well because it was riding on the coattails of the hype that preceded G98, (which was quite a bit actually). They didn't want to risk it again.

>It's a fun 70s Godzilla throwback.
Yeah but it's also a lazy pastiche of other worn-out ideas already done in earlier films, and aside from the craziness of the black hole thingamajig, it doesn't do anything special. Tokyo SOS sucked, but at least it seemed like it tried to have some sort of message and underlying theme with all the "return the bones to the sea" thing, it was just very poorly executed. Megaguirus felt like it was just made for the sake of existing, it's basically a test version of G against MG with very little merit of its own.

At least it brought in Michiru Oshima. But as other anon said, it did so poorly in Japan that Sony didn't want any of it.
>>
>>14526601
Even for a Godzilla movie, that one felt cheap and rushed. Those weird framerate stutters, clearly visible wires, and low-quality CG made that movie look worse than most of the actual 70's Godzilla movies. Plus the human plotline was boring and Megaguirus just wasn't a very interesting opponent, as cool as it looked.

On the upside, Dimension Tide was awesome just for how hilariously excessive it was, and that scene of somebody climbing Godzilla was fun.
>>

Weren't the framerate stutters meant to represent Megaguirus-vision?

It was. This was back in 1992. Miyazaki shot him down though and just said he wanted to play "war games". The God Warrior Appears in Tokyo is just a tribute to Nausicaa but most certainly not a sequel, nor will Anno ever do anything with Nausicaa again, at least animation-wise.
>>

Yes, he has made comments about it in interviews before. He is particularly bitter about Japan being on the losing side in World War II. His political views are very similar to Matsumoto Leiji's, which, by the current overton window's standards in western countries, puts him on the far right.

Unlike Leiji though, Anno doesn't really weave his political views into his works that strongly. Even the stuff in Gunbuster is pretty mild, mostly a background thing.

Wasn't 3.0 an ode to collectivism? To be fair, the production was a fucking mess, the main goal was to turn Eva into a multi-entry franchise and that mean to bury Shinji and Tsurumaki and the rest of the team got creative input and they never understood what was Shinji's problem, they were basically Kensuke
>>

Tsurumaki said he had literally no idea what the fuck was going on during 3.0's production and was only following Anno's orders. The old hack is dragging down all the other talents with him.

> There was this rumor that spread around of an unmade movie that was about grown-up junior fighting what could only be described as a man-made frankengoji made with DNA from Godzilla, Battra, and Destroyah.

I doubt there's any validity to it. After Destoroyah, Toho moved onto the Mothra Trilogy and Godzilla was left in the hands of Sony (which was intended to be a trilogy). After the colossal misfire that was Godzilla (1998), it's unlikely Toho that wanted to bog themselves down in heavy continuity again. Continuity made it difficult to secure theatrical releases for the Heisei films. That's why things were looser than they ever were for the Millennium Era.
>>
>>14527265
To clarify my previous post:

- I meant theatrical releases outside of Japan.
- Toho originally didn't plan to make another Godzilla until 2004. Sony's trilogy going south changed things drastically.

Same. I like Kong and all, but I'm not feeling it this time around. It's not just the general pessimism I have towards this whole cinematic universe endeavor, this movie didn't seem interesting to me to begin with, apart from a fleeting moment of intrigue when I first heard about it, but that dissipated almost immediately.

But I was hype and optimistic for G14. Maybe if I act like a cynical cunt for this film, it will actually become a smash success and a pleasant surprise.

I feel like losing Gareth Edwards means we might actually see more of the kaiju in Godzilla 2 if it ends up happening. Plus I could see them using Skull Island as an opportunity to introduce Rodan. Like make Skull Island the source of some of the oversized dinosaur members of the Toho stable.
>>
>>14527675
I went into the theaters knowing Godzilla would have limited screen time and that the humans were the main focus. Gareth Edwards talked a good game, comparing his film to Gojira (1954). And I fell for it. However, the human drama is downright awful. Besides Cranston and maybe Watanabe's character, you care little to nothing about anything regarding the humans. This one flaw is fatal because so much is centered around it. These characters have no more to them than the average blockbuster character. Only difference is all the life and personality are sucked out of them. The monsters are the backdrop. There's no real thematic depth or grit, yet the film is relentlessly serious. The score further sabotages the experience. Teasing Godzilla felt like an insult and by time he shows up its too little too late. I love Jaws and I love Alien. The characters click in those films. Even when the creatures are off screen they have presence. G14 is so dull it hurts.

>>

Would be neat if they got the rights for other faces. I could imagine Gorosaurus, Varan and even Zilla fitting in. And at that point why not throw in Ebirah, Kumonga or any other no-special-powers animal-like Kaiju. Kong could beat some of them up as a prelude to his planned fight with Godzilla. Or maybe the human characters could clash with Meganulon or "regular-size" Kamacuras as a tribute to the insect pit scene.

And their licencing fees alone would bankrupt the movie.

Toho seems quite confident about this. May we actually have something special this time around? How will mainstream media, causal audiences, and Western critics react to Hideaki Anno and the first Japanese Godzilla film on the word stage in decades? Any chance Shin Godzilla will be showered in praise or will it be dismissed without a second thought?
>>
>>14528718
Don't kid yourself, it will never reach the popularity of any Hollywood film no matter how good it is. Even if it does turn out well, American audiences will have a much tougher time sympathizing with the story since it deals on such a personal level to the Japanese 2011 quake. Outside of Japan, it will not even be a blip on the radar.
>>
>>14528763
It took a while, though Gojira (1954) eventually got recognized as great cinema. And much of the drama in said film revolved around nuclear anxieties. Japan was the only country to really experience something on that level.

I know cultural differences will probably keep many from fully understanding or giving Shin Godzilla an honest chance. But it isn't impossible. And I think Hideaki Anno is probably among the few Japanese directors alive today in the position to produce an objectively good kaiju film. Visuals effects might be a little wobbly. However, there is still a chance for a compelling narrative, engaging characters, great cinematography, and a moving score.
>>
>>14528818
It may be looked back as a cult classic if it's any good at all, but unless it has Hollywood's grease and popular actors smattered all over it, no typical moviegoer is ever going to give this a chance.

>mainstream media
Online news outlets will report that there's a new Godzilla movie and forget about it the second they hit the submit button. Maybe they'll give it a mention by the time (or if) the next American one comes out.

>causal audiences
Most won't ever hear of it. Everyone else will just look at promo images or the trailer, dislike them and comment how stupid the effects look and that Japanese are retarded for still making monster movies. Then they'll go onto peeing themselves over the next batch of "superior" high budget Hollywood blockbusters. I mean, take basically any shitty article on any obscure site, and look at all the vile disdain casuals are already pouring onto the movie (by which of course I mean don't go look at them, stay the hell away). Casual viewers won't ever be caught dead giving low budget cultural specific genre movies a fair chance.

>Western critics
I'm sure there will be some who try to look at it in a positive manner, and analyze any sort of subtext and social significance. But most will just glance at it and say "no way I'm touching some stupid Chinese rubber monster shit" to themselves and forget about it.

Godzilla sadly isn't the widely loved global phenomenon some fans make it out to be. Most people around the world regard it as cheaply made bottom of the barrel garbage that the Japanese make for themselves, or at best as laughable schlock that somehow has a cult following. Much like with the rest of the franchise, fans and monster movie enthusiasts will keep talking about the film, and it will remain a relevant topic for a long time in their circles. No matter how the movie turns out, this is bound to happen simply due to the circumstances of its release, what with it being the first Toho movie in a long time, for being attached to Anno, or for Godzilla's altered portrayal. So yeah, it can easily be something special alright, but only if you think within the boundaries of its niche fanbase.

So even if somehow Anno produces some of the greatest cinema of all time and the actors deliver stellar award-winning performances, Shin Godzilla never receive proper recognition due it being a low budget, foreign monster film. And not saying the film will be a masterpiece, only offering a hypothetical situation. Anno allegedly said he wanted to surpass Gojira (1954), so for this question I'm just pretending he did.

>>14528933
Evangelion 3.0 only got released this year. And wasn't there a subtitle problem with one of the Attack on Titan live-action films? But how regularly does this kind of thing occur? Every company has its mistakes.
>>
>>14528918
Just to add to that, I'm sure some non-fans will give it a chance out of curiosity, like maybe someone who's seen one or two Godzilla movie back in the day and wants to see what a modern one looks and feels like. But with certain aspects of the movie already being polarizing among fans, they can easily end up liking it or hating it too, and there's no guarantee they'd understand all of its themes.

I'm cautiously optimistic about all of this. Gunbuster and Evangelion are some of my favorite anime. Cutie Honey was fine and God Warrior in Tokyo was interesting. And I know many of you here despise Rebuild, however, I think it's perfectly good entertainment. Sure, not as deep and masterfully handled as the original television series. A better job could have been done with it. Though it's definitely a well produced and entertaining work that still attempts to scratch at the deeper things.

Meanwhile, recent Godzilla films have been various shades of dull and mediocre. We need someone or something to push the envelope while remaining faithful to the core elements of the character and franchise. Godzilla (2014) wasn't it and Anno has a solid record. Even if it isn't a masterpiece, it's almost certain to be something memorable.

Even if his movie hypothetically surpasses G54 in some way, I doubt it would ever gain a similar recognition because there's just too much shit sticking to the franchise and the perception of Japanese media as a whole.

G54 has the benefit of having been seen as a cult classic for decades, during which time it gathered enough positive rep to turn around the bad critical reception it received upon release. Yeah, most people out there have never seen it, an average American is likely more familiar with the '56 recut, and the movie still carries the "it's just a guy in a suit" stigma. But its (pop)cultural importance, its sincere and serious tone, and the fact that it's old (which gives the effects some leeway) means that the more open-minded viewer will probably be willing to judge it fairly without dismissing it out of hand. The history behind the movie is also interesting, and its message was highly relevant at the time, so most are willing to forgive if it comes across as heavy-handed in some scenes.

To reach the same sort of recognition, Resurgence would have to overcome way more hurdles. Monster movies have way too much of a negative image, low-budget Japanese ones especially, and no matter how well Anno handles the film's themes, people will say that it's forced or that a Godzilla movie can't be taken seriously in this day and age. Really, I see this as a film that no one outside its intended audience and the fans will be able to appreciate fully. I know I'm being pessimistic as fuck, but that's what the franchise taught me to be, and I still hope the movie performs decently within its own genre.

Well yeah, that's part of the franchise's appeal.

Japanese audiences cheered during Godzilla vs King Ghidorah because in the Mecha Ghidorah battle, they destroyed the then-recently built new Tokyo city hall, which most people thought was a massive waste of money and giving it the nickname of the "Tax Towers"

The spoilers were posted in the last thread. Second Godzilla. Poison Gas. Blah Blah. They're just making fun of some autist who posted a fan reaction vid.

Honestly, most of them seem like assholes. They have a literally 100 comment arguement over the CGI of the Apache helicopters, and most of them hate the Showa films, and can't stop praising Destroyah and Biollante as the best films in the series.
>>
>>14530145
They're the Japanese version of /a/?
>>
>>14530145
> Hates the Showa Era and considers Destoroyah one of the best films in the series

DROPPED

But according to a online poll from two years ago, Biollante is Japan's favorite Godzilla film. Sci-Fi Japan covers it.

>most of them hate the Showa films, and can't stop praising Destroyah and Biollante as the best films in the series.

So what's the problem?
>>
>>14530163
It's kind of strange that none of the Heisei monsters have ever appeared outside of their debut films
>>
>>14530192
Not strange at all, as much as I love the Heisei Monsters, they were all One Trick Ponies.

Showa's catalog of monsters were simple, and had simple origins. Most of them were: >Mutants/Mutated Animals.
>An alien.
>A ancient dinosaur.
>A robot.
It's easy to just throw them in a movie without much explanation of dedication to just their origin, "It's a giant mutated Shrimp!", then Godzilla fights it.

Heisei's catalog on the other hand was more technical with how each new monster was introduced and "born". You had:
>A Daughter of a Scientist who's soul got mixed into a project based on mixing Godzilla's blood with that of a plant.
>A Monster created through time fuckery, then dies, then is brought back as a cyborg through time fuckery.
>A Evil Mothra.
>A alien clone of Godzilla, either created from Plant Godzilla's particles going into a fucking black hole, or the same thing, but with Mothra instead.
>A mutated mirco crab that was created from the thing that killed the very first Godzilla.
So having anything from Heisei, and with the way Toho is about the slight changes to anything Godzilla, you can understand why they normally stick to Mothra, Ghidorah, and Mechagodzilla.

Honestly, they never had an opportunity. Toho introduced two original monsters, Orga and Megaguirus, for the first two films of the Millennium Era. G2000 was only moderately successful and Megaguirus flopped. Understandably, Toho was fearful and decided to play things safe. Introducing popular characters helped in the Heisei Era (Return of Godzilla's box office returns were lackluster and Biollante flopped), so Toho brought King Ghidorah, MechaGodzilla, and Mothra back out. Everything after Megaguirus featured one or two of these monsters.

Also, the original Heisei monsters like Biollante and Destoroyah are tied to a pretty specific origin. Battra could easily be used again, though SpaceGodzilla should stay in the past (imo).
>>
>>14530032
This looks so fucking cool. I can't wait.
>>
>>14530228
I love both Orga and Megaguirus, but:
>Orga was a slow and stiff piece of shit that was only interesting because of his copying ability, and only memorable for trying to shallow Godzilla whole.
>Megaguirus is kinda there, fast, but taken out by a single Atomic breath shot.

If Toho would allow the Directors to alter the origin and the abilities of the monsters, it could help, but the overall problem with newer monsters in the Godzilla franchise is that they were created too late.
It's like Comic villains, they can create a new and interesting one, but people are still going to want Doctor Doom or The Joker.

Showa was the cut off point for most monsters in the Godzilla franchise.
Only so many monsters made the "A/B Role", while Monsters like Titanosaurus, Megalon, and Varan will never see another movie, and continue being Comic fluff/Filler.

And Godzilla (2014) is sitting pretty low on the list. Where might Shin Godzilla fall?

If Bagan was ever used as an actual monster, what would you want its origins to be? For me I'd want to see it be like some sort of ancient or godlike monster that was designed to kill Godzilla by a lost civilization
>>
>>14530560
Sounds okay enough to me, though it only works for continuities where Godzilla was already a monstrous thing before the bombs. Would be neat if he was to be based off real life cultures and their mythologies from the Pacific Rim region, in a similar vein to how King Seesaw was meant to be an ancient Okinawan guardian.

I was thinking mroe along the lines of the civilization believed that their world would end at the hands of a creature similar to Godzilla which was why they created Bagan. Rather than Goji already existing he was predicted by an oracle and she believed that they needed to create a much more powerful beast to destroy it whenever it came into existence.
>>
So, I was wondering. Was their ever any Godzilla that scared you when you first watched it? GMK freaked me out a little since he was so damn monstrous in that one.

Godzilla vs. Biollante. I had a shitty quality VHS that made it really hard to see Biollante's eyes, so it looked like a giant gaping mouth lined with teeth. Scared the shit out of me as a kid.
>>
>>14531126
This looks pretty damn good. Guessing it happens before Godzilla since Goodmans character is acting like people don't know of giant monsters yet.
I love how big Kong is, makes him even more intimidating.

Correct. It's set during the Vietnam War. So no Goodman or Jackson in the Godzilla sequels probably.

'74 Mechagodzilla where Fake Godzilla tears Anguirus' jaw. It was the first exposure to gore I ever had and it was pretty mortifying at 6 or 7 to see Godzilla suddenly turn on his best bud and horrifically maim him (also Anguirus' last appearance for 30 years being him crying in pain with a broken jaw and digging to escape Fake G). I had to stop the VHS and when I watched it again, I fast forwarded through that part. Luckily, it hardened me up a little so that I could handle the geysers of blood later in the film.

>>

I'd say it already looks better than G2014 but the advertising on that was pretty deceptive (like it always is). Hope it leads to a better big budget Godzilla movie down the road if possible.
>>
>>14531230
Well, he's gotta be around Godzilla's size so the fight ca be on equal ground.

How would you all react if Kong had lighting powers again?
>>

>Kong and Godzilla fight Ghidorah
>Ghidorah keeps zapping Kong
>Kong keep getting stronker
>Kong deadlifts Ghidorah for days
>>
>>14531264
>Ghidorah doesn't know what to do
>Zapping is all it has.
>Godzilla actually feels sorry for him as Kong beats his ass.
>>
>>14531260
Personally, I wouldn't mind. King Kong has really always been low-key and pedestrian, fighting only dinosaurs or climbing buildings... he never had a chance for an expansive and varied universe like Godzilla did. I'd say something small like Kong harnessing the power of electricity or exhibiting some kind of primordial ancient magic power is par for the course. Hell, it could change things up by giving Godzilla a weakness against magic -- most comic books have alien or sci-fi based heroes being weak against magic, why not Godzilla?
>>
>>14531260
I don't see why not. The Mutos had the EMP attack
>>
>>14531290
>>14531274
I just want it so we can have a scene where
>Godzilla kicks Kongs ass
>Turns around and starts to leave.
>Suddenly lighting.
>Long slowly gets up, his eyes glowing and his fists having electricity flowing around them.
>Both roar and run at each other.

A quote from the director here: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/cineeurope-wonder-woman-skull-island-904652 says ""This is going to be the biggest Kong there's ever been," boasted director Jordon Vogt-Roberts. "Not 10 foot or 30 foot, but a 100-foot ape.""

And that trailer doesn't look like he's a mere 100 feet.
>>
>>14531446
How tall was Legendary Godzilla again?
>>
>>14531470
355 feet tall and 500~ feet long.
>>
>>14531446
Yeah, I figure he's probably something like 300 or 325 ft... but, then again, it's really just relative since giant figures in film and television are never fully to scale scene to scene.
>>
>>14531487
I'm guessing he's fairly close to Legendary Godzilla's height, so probably closer to 325-330 feet.
>>
>>14531511

That's nice, he's tall but not stupidly tall like G14, I think he could be 100ft standing on his fours and perhaps reach nearly twice that size while erect.
