If you can handle moonspeaker, by all means read the LN.
OVAs are vastly condensed in comparison to the original medium, thus in the OVA it frequently feels like stuff is coming out of nowhere. There are also some story changes both minor and major - tho nothing truly game changing.
Watch the OVAs too, of course - for nothing else if not spectacular production values and soundtrack.

The LN is more of a rough draft of the overall Unicorn narrative.

It's also a bit excessively a clone of UC79. I mean the OVA is a celebration (and critique) of all things Universal Century, but the LN is like a total recreation of UC79 to the point of absurdity.


Also the quality of fan translations is pretty ass when it comes to LNs.

The intent was sound - to show that after the shit that Zeon pulled, there was so much bad blood involved, that neither side is above comitting hate crimes against the other, fueling an ever spinning spiral of hate.

The initial red psychoframe is, I think, also partly to blame. Red against white, with red being the accent color, makes for a weird scheme. The green NT-D at the end of the OVA, or as the Perfect Grade, is pretty damn nice to look at.

Capital Tower is not the Tree Of Ades. The site doesn't even remotely resemble the Adeskan ruins of the old elevator. The Ades may have been the south-amerian elevator from 00 (insert argument about "AD" calendar here) but G-Reco is stated by its writer/director to be five centuries after Turn A, making it a few millenia (at least) after the Ades was destroyed.

I think, that canon states that The Man, collectively shat itself over the Axis Shock and the implications of what a Psycoframe is capable of.

RE:0096 is really just there if you want a legit free and very easily accessible way to watch Unicorn without buying BDs. You can just go to Youtube and start watching.

If you have no issue with finding and downloading OVA torrents you can do that too.

All RE:0096 does is split each OVA into three 20 minute episodes and pad the time needed with OP and ED sequences, and "Previously on Gundam Unicorn..." recaps at the beginning of episodes. Other than that the two are identical, except for the end of OVA1 being the beginning of RE:0096 episode 1.
