Here's some very alpha gameplay of SymphoSlash. sprites are of course placeholders, though i do like how the health/phonic gain bar turned out. Camera can actuallly turn, but i've not yet assigned a button to that, and its pretty intensive, as it needs to rotate and redraw all the sprites on the screen.
The red rectangle is a to indicate the corner of a sector, and shadows indicate hitboxes.
While pygame has some "check for sprite colliding functions" and the like, i'm not using those, rather i'm writing my own engine in the back, and the display is just drawing the proper sprites at the proper positions and angles.

I think it has to do with the lumping of genres together.
Anime/manga are just japanese animation/comic books, they have different genres, tropes and demographics inside it, but people tend to look at it as if it was a single genre.
So people hold all "faults" of every genre accountable for it all. >>14487521 brings a good point, there are many manga/anime series that lack the eye candy, but people lump them all together anyway.
Doesn't help that in the west most of the comic book genres sorta died off the mainstream and nowadays we have superhero comics coming in massively over-represented, meaning the rarer stuff like romance or pure action-less comedy have little chance of surviving in the mainstream market and thus don't impact the vision people have of the media. Also, the comic book industry is dominated by like, 4 publishers, 2 way bigger than the others, and those 2 specialize in superhero comic books. Aoi once summed up her early career as "At first I used to voice a lot of young girls/loli roles, but soon people realized that I (my personality) wasn't quite like that".

Oh, and no, no there isn't a second season planned. For starters, part of the reason why Gatou even adapted the series into an anime is because he had regrets over the way volume 1 turned out.
The rest are Fumoffu-like randomness and there isn't enough main plot to deliver on the other aspects S1 already did so well besides the comedy.
Seiya still hasn't confronted his mother, Latiffa does very little in the LN considering she is even blind in that version, something Gatou regreted because it severely limited how present she could be and the park isn't in danger of being suddenly closed anymore. Also, the totally-not-Walmart that Seiya got accross the street opened so they don't have as much trouble with clients anymore, although attendance dropped like a rock when the ticket price went back to normal.
Nothing plot-relevant enough had happened when I last checked so a second season is unlikely, even though the show is bloody excellent.
