I honestly didn't pay this design much mind but since I got a revoltech of it with the weapon in pic related I'm starting to like it a lot. The monoeye head looks far better than whatever was going on with 02's head (which isn't even consistent between the show and EoE)

In the show Rei is arguably the best pilot. She follows orders without question and isn't hampered by Shinji's emotional issues or Asuka's insistance on showing off and her ego.

Shinji skill is debatable. Most of his impressive wins were him blacking out and letting mommy take over. Another one was just him rushing it recklessly with the knife. And the others were with help from other pilots.

The only really skilled win he had on his own was with the sniper.
