No, they're Chaos pilots though, but they're somewhere else entirely. Planet's called Pipure and has an old style macross on it.

Um, no shit? Aliens that are basically just humans on a different planet is one of the most laziest, cliche ways of writing a sci-fi story. ESPECIALLY when it's anime, where the animators are simply too untalented to draw genuinely otherworldly looking entities.

The setting pretty much allows for slightly-different-humans-on-another-planet.

For Delta, they wanted to go back to VF vs VF fights.
One way to do that is to have humans fight humans for whatever reason, or they could expand on the background setting and have more races seeded by the Protoculture come in.
