They're the backbone. You can build an army of the dudes and never ever have a problem with it. Some really are the "underdogs", but performance wise and in the background we know these dudes won wars, and even so you can have your special snowflakes. There's a GM for everyone.

I like the head too. GM heads have a cool, classic sci-fi "spaceman" look to them.

Some of the GMs are pretty nice, a lot of them are shit though.

The color scheme is way more coordinated than most Gundams. And I really like visors; they're cool on mobile suits. They make me think of sci-fi powered armor. Also, I hate beam rifles because they make everything into one shot kills, so I really enjoy seeing a bunch of GMs shooting with rifles or spray guns.

Less busy design that makes the silhouette stand out more, visor head is less toyetic, simple colour scheme, it's easier to self-insert as a GM pilot than as a Gundam one.
It's the same reason people like the Panzer IV over Tiger II (they do, right?).
