Isn't that what most super robot shows are?
>>
It was always like that. Big O is an exception. I like weighty mechs too but don't pretend like things used to be any better.
>>
>now
Before it was the same except everything was blocky as fuck. The only difference is that now the dodgy mechs actually look the part.
>>
Actually, direction with slow, lumbering momentous movement seemed most common in the late 90s/early 2000s

Giant Robo, for example, probably had much more of a sense of weight in the OVA than it did in the toku. GaoGaiGar and Dai Guard as well seemed to hit harder than most of what had come before. And strangely, the Macross ships in Frontier, of all things, had that kind of force to them.

Though on the other end of the scale, you also have stuff like VOTOMS ATs, which also have an appropriate sense of weight, which is not much as all given how tiny they are.

There's a reason WHY Big O failed in Japan. It looked like crap.

But I want realistic mecha, not your sllllooooowwwwwwmmmmmmoooooooo-iiiiiiiiisssssssss-cccccccooooooooolllllllllll shit.

There is no logical or physical reason why they should move slow.
Quite the contrary, even being simply as nimble as you are, the massive height would make them ridiculously fast compared to your body.

And before you ape out, square cube law is a thing that works. Nowhere does it say that big things are slow because that is pure fantasy.
Learn the theory, don't throw it around like a magical formula.
>>
>>14460623
>There is no logical or physical reason why they should move slow.
Newton's first and second laws at work along with the principle of inertia. The bigger they are, the more force required to move them and the more resistance they'll have to a change in velocity. So yes, they'd be slow for the same reason a semi truck accelerates more slowly than a motorcycle. However, there is one unrealistic part of this: they'd also take forever to stop moving and they never actually do.

>I want realistic mecha
fuck off back to >>>/k/ then.

Tylor was incredibly Japanese. It flopped because the story is super cliche, and the original Light Novels are really shit. Half the girls in the anime don't do anything in the LNs, only Yuriko gets any development which is why she wins. She was the only girl in the running.

Bebop and Trigun weren't ignored. Trigun had decent popularity, it just wasn't a breakout hit like Evangelion because it's fundamentally unappealing. It's a Western, which is a dead genre. It's a mix of comedy and seriousness with some half-well-done philosophy, which means there's a lot of tonal dissonance. And the manga ended up having too much cut content so that it ended up being pretty confusing towards the end.

Bebop is a cult classic but it was never going to get big numbers in Japan. The style is all wrong, and the concept is stupid.

On the flipside, modern Reideen showed how this can backfire, since that had rather slow mecha fights.

Nice argument fagtron.
>>
>>14466101
The opening kind of implies that, but I don't recall them being like that in the actual show

Though I wouldn't be surprised if they did. I think the reason we don't get this more often is budget restrictions. Animating something moving more slowly takes more frames. But Escaflowne had one of the highest anime budgets ever. It could afford it.

Haven't watched the movie in a while, but I rewatched the show recently and I found the combat generally had good weight. The Zaibach units were a bit floatier at times, particularly the two jet-powered cat sister units, but the Escaflowne, Scheherazade, and other 'melefs plopped around with a nice heft to them.

As for the budget, I believe a significant part of that was the soundtrack. Didn't they get an actual Gregorian orchestra for the main chant/song?
>>
I just watched Big O for the first time in ages and just realized I have no paraphernalia to celebrate the show. Are there any plamo or any action figures for that matter that aren't ridiculously expensive?
>>
>>14470913
No, everything was limited edition. Pay out the ass; as long as it's not above $250, it's worth it.
>>
>>14470918
That stinks. I remember looking a couple years ago and seeing a full on action figure of Big O for less than 90 bucks for Americans. I saw an issue of Toyfare waaaay back in like 2007 and they showed an American Big O figure that I really liked. I guess something like that wouldn't be cheap forever though. I'll keep searching regardless Thanks for your response.
>>
>>14470971
Just use Amazon. I went to Amazon and was shocked that I could buy Macross models, even Chogokins, which were out of stock on Amiami. And the price was only $20-$40 more than the original Jap price for some sellers; more reliable ones were like twice the price though. But shipping was WAY cheaper.
>>
>>14470980
I'll try that. I might be wrong, but I remember an American toy manufacturer making a Big O action figures. I want one that isn't garbage but doesn't cost 400 bucks, ya know? I know that might be a taldl order now, but we'll see. I'll check Amazon to see what they come up with. Thanks again, /m/.
>>
>>14458326
Blame the lack of talent in the modern industry and the lack of demand for such talent.
>>
>>14470913
There is the shitty plamo Bandai put out, an action figure in a clamshell with a card back (probably the one you are talking about), and the Roger and Dorothy figmas.

The money pits are the Max Gokin figure, the Soul of Chogokin figure and the P-Bandai expansion set, and the vinyl figures.

I was lucky enough to snag a SoC and Max Gokin figure for well below the current market price a few years ago.
>>
>>14471004
While it is obvious that a lot of the industry does not understand how to properly incorporate physics into the movement of mechs, I would say that animation budgets are the bigger restriction.

As someone said a bit earlier in the thread, it take more frames to properly animate slower movements which would result in higher cost for both 3D and 2D work.

Even little girls suffer from the budget (see Episode 1 of Nanoha vs the rest of the series).
>>
>>14471044
Animation is an issue, but weight is another one. "Official" mech weight statistics are nonsense. Without weight as a relative component to scale, you're never going to get a good sense of the heft and momentum an object should carry at a given speed. CCA, as an example, has really great choreography but the suits literally prance across the screen in the Nu vs. Sazabi showdown; not the worst thing, since they're in space, but it's still weird to see giant metal constructs move so effortlessly.
>>
>>14471044
>Episode 1 of Nanoha
This one was literally "overkill : animation for the sake of animation with no storytelling purpose whatsoever".

>As for the budget
TV anime per episode budget historically:

1962 - 2.1 million yen - Astro Boy
1963 - 1.2 million yen - Gigantor
1965 - 2.3 million yen - Super Jetter
1982 - 5.5 million yen - Macross
1987 - 10 million yen - Legend of Galactic Heroes
1994 - 16.6 million yen - Dirty Pair Flash
1994 - 30.9 million yen - Mega Man
1995 - 6.25 million yen - Evangelion
1996 - 30 million yen - Escaflowne
1998 - 20 million yen - Cowboy Bebop
2000 - 10 million yen - One Piece
2000 - 9 million yen - Zoids
2001 - 5.5 million yen - Sister Princess
2002 - 13 million yen - Gunslinger Girl
2002 - 25 million yen - Gundam SEED
2002 - 30 million yen - Ghost in the Shell
2003 - 18 million yen - Kaleido Star
2003 - 30 million yen - Astro Boy
2004 - 33 million yen - Gundam SEED Destiny
2004 - 32 million yen - SAMURAI 7
2005 - 23 million yen - Eureka Seven
2007 - 10 million yen - Bokurano
2007 - 10 million yen - Bamboo Blade
2007 - 20 million yen - TTGL
2007 - 15 million yen - Darker Than Black
2007 - 25 million yen - Sekei no Moribito
2007 - 32 million yen - Denno Coil
2007 - 17 million yen - Gundam 00
2008 - 22 million yen - Gundam 00 S2
2011 - 12 million yen - Index
2014 - 20 million yen - Shirobako

Who knows? Bebop looked better than Escaflowne with better animation and had Yoko Kanno doing the OST as well. Also looking at this list makes it obvious that budget management is much more relevant than budget itself (I expected Astro 2003 to be much bigger, SEED Destiny is a fucking joke).

That's why Asuka vs. those goofy bird eva unit things in EoE is one of my favorite action scenes, the sense of gravity and weight, the tangible crunch whenever one of them gets crushed. It's a different technique of animation altogether, hence why it looks so good.
The momentum is a part of it but even with all the momentum of the world, that scene would have been much worse with the standard animation technique.
