When we find out what kind of AT you actually piloted since you would otherwise make absolutely no sense in 99% of all situations even by SRW standards.

Why not just give him Chirico uses, while Chirico has a current AT he is using, Mellowlink can use the one Chirico previously used?

Because SRW doesn't make these simple assumptions in most cases. Mellowlink won't be able to pilot a Scopedog unless he was confirmed to have piloted a Scopedog at some point.

Besides, no one would be using Mellowlink to see him pilot an AT anyway

While he wasn't shown piloting, he and the rest of his old unit did pilot Scopedogs back in Miyoite before the Jijirium theft.

Mellowlink would be the best secret unit. You just need to give him a space helmet and some rocket boots and you could even take him along on space routes

It would actually be cool to play a SRW that worked at different scales in a manner like Super Tokusetsu Taisen did.
You could have people fighting on foot as well, either because they are capable of fighting mechs on their own or have it as the pilots doing commando stuff to carry out a specific objective in close quarters while the giants are smashing away at each other.

Don't forget, Mellowlink IS an AT pilot, the whole scandal was started because his team had them taken away and given Anti-AT rifles instead.

They could always put him on the motorcycle for the beginning, and just give him a random Scopedog, and have many of his attacks stepping out of it to do some random shit..
